Welcome to Week 3 of our online section of Engl-122.
You are getting the hang of our class routine and the technical aspects of online learning
in D2L. This week you will add a few more technical tools to your toolbox.

Complete a draft of
Essay 1 (850-1000
words)

Using a planning strategy from the MindTap chapter


and the pre-writing material you generated for Essay
1 in Week 2, create an 850-1000 word draft of your
essay that presents a single topic, a strong writing
voice, and a series of contrasts.

INSTRUCTIONS
Do not use a phone or a tablet to prepare your draft
you must use a word program that allows you to move
material around easily, see large portions of your
writing, and provides a spell checker.

Make a recording of
your voice reading
your draft

Your task is to create a recording of your voice


reading your draft aloud (this can include a picture, or
just be an audio recording), verbatim, and then
include a link to this recording along with your draft in
Post 5.
You and your classmates need to hear you read your
draft this will help you develop a strong writing
voice, demonstrate the amount of effort you put into
your work, and catch errors before turning your work
in for a grade.
Students must be able to open your link and listen to
your recording, so make sure it is readable. One
option is to use the YouTube webcam described
below.

Make a webcam of your voice reading your draft and
capture the YouTube URL link.
You most likely will catch errors as you read your draft
aloud. This is a good time to correct those errors on
your draft dont wait until later to fix them.

Paste your draft into the textbox for Post 5 do not
submit an attachment. This draft can be typed single
space you do not need to use the MLA format in
your draft.
Paste the link to your recording of you reading your
draft at the bottom of your post do not post the link
in a separate post.

Follow the directions for sending your draft to the
Paper Center.
Be sure to include the directions and grading rubric
for Essay 1; otherwise, the tutor will not be able to
give you useful feedback on this assignment.

Reply to at least two


posts by Thursday

Reply to a minimum of two Post 5s, making sure to


reply to posts to which there are not yet replies first.
Open the post and then open the webcam link. Listen
and follow along on the draft as the author reads their
work aloud.
In your reply:
1. Let the author know where in their paper they
made you laugh and cry and smile and frown.
2. Comment on what you learned about the
author as a writer and a person from reading
and listening to their draft.
3. Ask two journalistic questions you feel the
author should answer in the final version of
their Essay 1.

most useful.
2. Include the title you will use for your final
version of Essay 1 and explain how this title
draws your reader to the central message of
your essay.
3. Re-read Burciagas essay and explain what
about his essay inspired you to write the one
you did.
