N479 Professional Activity Evaluation Form

Your Name: Tonya King Date of Activity: 10-3-15/11-23-15 Faculty name: Mary OConnell
Describe the community service/professional activity/s you attended or participated with:
I was in the role of a student in two different professional activities in order to obtain my
hours. The first activity was a class called Emergency Civilian Casualty Care through the
Medical Reserve Corps of Southern Arizona. The classes purpose was to provide us with
information surrounding many topics, such as violent encounters, power grid disruption,
situational awareness, first aid, using tourniquets, wound packing, evacuation care, community
resiliency, and personal preparedness. I loved our speakers, Sheldon Marks and Mike Bishop,
because they were so full of enthusiasm and willing to share their depth of knowledge with us.
My favorite portion of the class was to learn about tourniquet placement. I learned that
tourniquets should be placed as high and tight on the extremity as possible. Even if the injury is
on the lower arm, the tourniquet should be placed on the highest point of the arm. In addition,
once the tourniquet is on, it should be left on until instructed otherwise. It is important to remove
clothing from around the tourniquet, so it is clearly visible to medical personnel and to write the
time it was placed. The last detail they shared was that if the tourniquet was placed properly, that
it would be extremely painful. I am grateful I had the opportunity to go to this class.
The second activity I attended was a Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers
class by Mark Falconer. My cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) certification had expired, so I
needed to renew my certification. The purpose of this course was to teach healthcare providers
about life-threatening emergencies that may result in a patient or civilian needing CPR. We went
through the CPR stages and it was reinforced that CPR should consist of 125 compressions per
minute with a depth of 2.5-3 inches for an adult. This was a good reminder since policies tend to
change somewhat with research. We also learned about using an AED and how to relieve
choking in adults and children. I enjoyed this class and it was good to be refreshed on these
safety tips again, so I will have just had fresh training going into my career.

Where was this held and what was the program/activity length?
The Emergency Civilian Casualty Care class took place at the Tucson Fire Department.
The second activity (BLS for Healthcare Providers class by EclipseCPR) took place at 4500 E.
Speedway Blvd in suite #84. Both classes had a length of four hours, eight hours total.
Discuss the value of this experience to you (be specific).
Both of these experiences were highly valuable to me. The Emergency Civilian Casualty
Care class was amazing and I was able to learn a significant amount of information and skills in
a short time period. I may never have to use some of these skills, such as some for violent
encounters, but they are still very important to have. I benefit from having personal knowledge
on these subjects and am can share this information as well. The BLS for healthcare provider
CPR class is a critical aspect for my future position, since I may have to use CPR in my career.
This is a lifesaving measure that I can use in my profession or in my daily life. It is required to
have CPR training in order to be an RN, so it is an added benefit to have it when applying for a
job.
Would you recommend this specific community experience in the future; why or why not?
I would highly recommend both of these experiences to other students, registered nurses,
health care professionals, and civilians in the future. I think it is critical that all of us be prepared
in the case an emergency occurs and be trained in CPR in the case that someone needed CPR. All
of the knowledge I gained from these experiences could be used by anyone and in multiple
situations. It would benefit any civilian to have the knowledge gained in these classes.
