Lesson Title & Big Idea*: Our Favorite Holiday (Traditions/ Holidays)
Lesson Overview/Summary*: (This is like an abstract of the structure and procedures section)
Students will explore the world outside their homes and neighborhoods as they study a variety of
ways that other families celebrate the holidays. Students will learn the ways in which people
celebrate three specific holidays: Hanukkah, Christmas, and Kwanzaa (to make lesson more
meaningful if students celebrate other holidays then these you can teach those instead). Using a
chart, we compare and contrast the elements of these celebrations. Then students will create a
collage of their own favorite holiday including words, drawings and photographs. After students
will write a short paragraph about that holiday including facts about that holiday, family
traditions, personal memories, and holiday favorites.
Key Concepts for each area (1-2 each): What you want the
students to know.*
1. Visual Art: How to use drawings, photographs, and art to
display their favorite holiday/traditions
2. Literacy: Students will reflect on why this holiday is
important to them
3. Social Studies: Students will understand why holidays are
celebrated and the importance for each culture.

Grade Level*: 4th

Class Periods Required:
(please circle)

Essential Questions (1-2)*:

What are some holidays we celebrate? (Make a list on the
board.)
Why do people celebrate each of these holidays?
Which holiday is celebrated in other countries? Which ones
are unique to our country?

Lesson Objectives/Goals: (Excellent resource at http://www.teachervision.fen.com/curriculum-planning/new-teacher/48345.html?for_printing=1&detoured=1): What

you want the students to do. *
1. Visual Art: The students will be able to make a collage to represent their favorite holiday that they celebrate
2. Literacy: The students will be able to write a paragraph about the holiday they chose by not only including facts but also
their traditions, personal memorize, and what that holiday means to them.
3. Social students: Students will be able to Compare and contrast Christmas, Hanukkah, and Kwanzaa holiday celebrations.

lesson plan would be:

I will show my own collage before students make their
own so they can see what the guidelines of what it is
supposed to look like.
Discussions: This happens at the beginning to have
students start thinking about holidays and traditions.
Lectures: Students will interact together by using the
interactive scrapbook cite.

3. Social Studies
Recognize and respect the differences between personal
culture and other cultures (i.e.: Christmas, Hanukkah,
and Kwanza)

elements. (The before, during, and after the lesson, e.g.
Engagement/Opening, Procedures, Guided Practice, Conclusion ,please be
very specific, walk me through step by step of the What of what is
happening with a rationale as to WHY you are doing this):

1. I will begin by introducing this assignment by using my

opening to gain students attention. With this I will talk
about:
What a tradition is (The reason I am talking about
traditions is for students to be able to recognize
there own traditions)
Ask the essential questions (By asking the essential
questions I am getting them to think about all
the different holidays and different holidays that
their classmates celebrate)
Show them my collage that they will be making (To
show them what they will be doing)

2. Next I will explain to students that they'll explore three big

winter holidays celebrated in the United States: Christmas,
Hanukkah, and Kwanzaa. (The reason I am doing this is
to explain what three holidays they are going to learn)
3. To get the class to start thinking about those holidays read
the book Too Many Holidays? (Book Summary: This year
Sharie's mother wants their family to celebrate Kwanzaa. And
she has to work on a project with Caitlin, who insists on
studying her family's Greek Christmas. Hannah, Sharie's best
friend, invites her over for Hanukkah) (I wanted to start
with this book because many students are able to
comprehend and become more interested in things if
they are in a story.)
4. Afterwards, I will pass out Pass out copies of the Thinking
question before students explore each scrapbook and have
them record their answers as we move through them
together.
5. During the first day of the lesson, as a class we will
explore the holidays Christmas and Hanukkah using
scrapbook
(Scrapbook is a great way to show students the
differences and similarities between holidays.
Each scrapbook is different, but they all share
common resources. Scrapbook has an interactive
website of photos, articles, and activities to
learn about the history and traditions of these
holidays. Plus, they can view postcards to see
how kids around the globe celebrate these
holidays)
6. On the second day of the lesson students will explore
Kwanza following the same steps that they did with
Christmas and Hanukkah and completing the thinking
questions

Opening (Gaining Attention, what will you show, or demonstrate)*:

I will begin by talking about what a tradition is and what types
of holiday traditions I celebrate. Then I will show my Christmas
holiday collage and read the paragraph that I wrote about

7. Once we finish going over the Kwanza, I will re-explain to

the students the final project that they will be completing
(making their holiday collage and the written paragraph)
8. Next, I will pass out the needed materials to make the
collage:
Glue
Scissors
Markers, colored pencils, crayons
Paper
Magazines
9. Students will start working on their collages. I will walk
around the room when the students are working on their
collages to check to make sure they have an understanding
of the elements they are supposed to include. I also can ask
them questions about why they chose to incorporate certain
images, words, or drawings into their artwork to see what
they are planning.
If students need extra time to work on their collages,
we will push the lesson to four days. During that time
students will complete their collages and start on their
paragraphs.
10. For homework students will write a paragraph about that
holiday including facts about that holiday, family traditions,
personal memories, and holiday favorites.
11. During the 3rd and final period once all students have
finished writing their paragraphs and collages, they will
present them to the class. They will explain as to why they
chose certain details in their college and what they mean to
them. At the end students will turn in their collages,
paragraph, and thinking question worksheets.
Closure (Reflecting Anticipatory Set, how will student share what they
learned):

After each lesson students will complete a worksheet about

each holiday answering that holidays thinking questions. For

their holiday collage students will share theirs along with

their written paragraph. Have the student talk about why
they made the decisions they made in their artwork. Each
student will write down one thing that they learned from their
peers presentation.

Summative Assessment strategy*:

On top of completing their college students will also have to
write a paragraph about that holiday including facts about
that holiday, family traditions, personal memories, and
holiday favorites. Once both are completed, students will
present their collage and paragraph to the class. They will
explain as to why they chose certain details in their college
and what they mean to them. At the end students will turn in
their collages, paragraph, and thinking question worksheets.

learning is happening?)

For the formative assessment, I will assess the students by

walking around the room when the students are working on
their collages to check to make sure they have an
understanding of the elements they are supposed to include. I
also can ask them questions about why they chose to
incorporate certain images, words, or drawings into their
artwork to see what they are planning.

What student prior knowledge will this lesson require/draw upon? (what do they need to already know)
The students will already know the expectations of writing

Technology Instructional and/or assistive technology incorporated into the lesson to enhance instruction and student learning)
When conducting this lesson, the teacher will utilize the Smartboard to show the website Scrapbook which will be used to learn
about each holiday.
How will this lesson allow for/encourage students to solve problems in divergent ways?
Throughout the art project I will not provide a correct way to complete their collage. There will be criteria they need to meet
but many different ways they could complete the project.
How will you engage students in routinely reflecting on their learning? (How will the students know they have learned something?)
During the first three days students will know they have learned something by completing the thinking questions for each
holiday that they go over (Christmas, Hanukkah, and Kwanza). With creating their own collage students also are including a
writing piece. With this writing piece it is making them apply their learning about holiday customs to consider their own
favorite holiday and family traditions

Differentiated/Accommodations/Modifications/Increase in Rigor To help meet the needs of all learners, learning differences,
cultural and language differences, etc.

There are many different accommodations and modifications that I can make to help all students reach their full potential.
When students have to answer the thinking questions I could give them a peer coach to work with so they can have support
and guidance while filling the sheet out. Also instead of writing their paragraphs, allow students who are having difficulty to
record their responses on a tape recorder.
