Lesson Title & Big Idea*: Our Favorite Holiday (Traditions/ Holidays)
Lesson Overview/Summary*: (This is like an abstract of the structure and procedures section)
Students will explore the world outside their homes and neighborhoods as they study a variety of
ways that other families celebrate the holidays. Students will learn the ways in which people
celebrate three specific holidays: Hanukkah, Christmas, and Kwanzaa (to make lesson more
meaningful if students celebrate other holidays then these you can teach those instead). Using a
chart, we compare and contrast the elements of these celebrations. Then students will create a
collage of their own favorite holiday including words, drawings and photographs. After students
will write a short paragraph about that holiday including facts about that holiday, family
traditions, personal memories, and holiday favorites.
Key Concepts for each area (1-2 each): What you want the
students to know.*
1. Visual Art: How to use drawings, photographs, and art to
display their favorite holiday/traditions
2. Literacy: Students will reflect on why this holiday is
important to them
3. Social Studies: Students will understand why holidays are
celebrated and the importance for each culture.

What student prior knowledge will this lesson require/draw upon? (what do they need to already know)
The students will already know the expectations of writing
Technology Instructional and/or assistive technology incorporated into the lesson to enhance instruction and student learning)
When conducting this lesson, the teacher will utilize the Smartboard to show the website Scrapbook which will be used to learn
about each holiday.
How will this lesson allow for/encourage students to solve problems in divergent ways?
Throughout the art project I will not provide a correct way to complete their collage. There will be criteria they need to meet
but many different ways they could complete the project.
How will you engage students in routinely reflecting on their learning? (How will the students know they have learned something?)
During the first three days students will know they have learned something by completing the thinking questions for each
holiday that they go over (Christmas, Hanukkah, and Kwanza). With creating their own collage students also are including a
writing piece. With this writing piece it is making them apply their learning about holiday customs to consider their own
favorite holiday and family traditions
There are many different accommodations and modifications that I can make to help all students reach their full potential.
When students have to answer the thinking questions I could give them a peer coach to work with so they can have support
and guidance while filling the sheet out. Also instead of writing their paragraphs, allow students who are having difficulty to
record their responses on a tape recorder.
