SUBJECT: One Book, One Committee Book Recommendations
The three books I chose after reviewing several books from different universities
including Ivy League and not well-known universities I chose: The Other Wes Moore:
One Name, Two Fates, No Impact Man, and College: What It Was, Is, and Should Be.
These book selections will increase their outside knowledge and allow them to gain
information for future classes and future life goals.
The criteria I used to make my decision were books that I saw repeated by several
universities, and two picks from well-known universities; Purdue University and
Vanderbilt University.

A guy who
has become
aware of the
climate
change crisis
attempts to
go green in
order to
change his
imprint on
the
environment
and this
book shares
his journey.
This is about
what college
is about,
what it
should be,
and how
students are
able to make
the most out
of it by
making the
most out of
themselves.

I believe these books would be an appropriate choice for the OBOC project and for
FGCU because No Impact Man deals with the environmental changes. FGCU is an ecofriendly school, which would definitely be of use in a Colloquium course and for other
students as well because it teaches them to be more aware of the climate changes and pay
more attention to the environment. The Other Wes Moore was used by Ball State
University, The College of New Jersey,, Davidson (NC), University at Buffalo, SUNY;
University of Arizona Honors Program, and University of South Carolina, Aiken. This is
a book that has to do with two men who have the same name and have had essentially the
same childhood and grow- up to live two totally different lifestyles teaching students that
life is what you make of it. The book College: What It Was, Is, and Should be teaches
what we should make out of college and to learn what we want to make of ourselves and
how to do so. The two books that deal with changing your life and making the most of it
is important for freshman students to read because they are starting a new chapter of their
lives and should be conscientious of that and make the most of it before they realize their
opportunities and life have flashed before their eyes.

Thank you for taking these books into consideration and allowing me the opportunity to
express my opinion. I was able to find all of my information on
http://homepages.gac.edu/~fister/onebook.html and I chose these books based on the
policies and mission statement FGCU has, the curriculum for colloquium, and basic
books that help guide students through college. Are there any books that I missed that I
should read?
