NURS 210

PT/OT Reflection
The physical therapy experience provided me with greater insight on patient
safety. Ive been learning through the program up to this point that patient safety consists
of reducing every possible threat to prevent endangering a patient. Ive learned that
nurses eliminate hazardous objects in a patients room, avoid medical errors, and create
nursing plans to enable health, wellness, and safety for the patient. Physical therapy helps
with the overall process of recovering from physical impairment. By helping with ADLs,
a patient is able to mentally reestablish him or herself and allow for physical recovery.
The experience also gave me better insight on how collaborative practice plays a role in
nursing care plans. Participating in physical therapy tasks allowed me to visualize a
patients progression in a care plan that I might be creating in the future.
The occupational therapy experience provided me with greater knowledge about
what the profession is about. I had no knowledge whatsoever of what occupational
therapists really do. They share many similarities with the tasks that physical therapists
perform, but they help patients get back into the community. An individual doesnt need
to be physically impaired to work with an occupational therapist. I learned that
occupational therapists dont help individuals to get jobs, but they help individuals to get
back into the community and be productive enough in society to eventually get jobs.
Through my experience with occupational therapy, I also learned that a nurse contributes
beyond recovery, and to a patients potential of returning to his or her occupation by
collaborating with an occupational therapist.
