Tourism can vary towards being an added burden, but has its advantages or
disadvantages.

There are many pros and cons to tourism. The list of pros and cons varies in
very many different ways. It can affect the infrastructure negatively and positively.
New roads, buildings, water, electricity, etc. can be created, but this doesnt mean
its the only positive affect. Tourists use these roads and essential services of the
locals. Tourists in our economy are causing pollution which is negatively impacting
our environment. A lot of people means more traffic and more traffic means more
traffic violations and accidents. This can affect locals that need to get to work on
time or go upon their everyday activities. Tourism also generates development of
illegal and/or destructive economic activities (markets for drugs, endangered
species, etc.) making it a possible threat to the community.

Water is one of many things that the tourism industry overuses and adds a
burden. Fresh water is an extremely valued natural resource. The tourism industry
overuses water resources for hotels, swimming pools, golf courses and personal use
of water by tourists. This can cause water shortages and degradation of water
supplies, as well as generating a greater volume of waste water. Though golf
courses are a huge attraction to many tourists, it overuses a large amount of fresh
water. Tourism can cause great pressure on the local community and its resources.
There are many projects in progress to better the communities. Pollution is
everywhere due to tourists such as our beaches, air emissions, noise, solid waste
and littering, releases of sewage, oil and chemicals, even architectural/visual
pollution.

Tourism poses a threat to a region's natural and cultural resources, such as
water supply, beaches, coral reefs and heritage sites, through overuse. Tourists
cause pollution due to the high population of people traveling by car. Certain events
can cause a lot of noise like bike week. It is also dangerous to the community and is
disruptive, though it benefits the community economically. Tourism can sometimes
infringe on human rights, with locals being displaced from their land making way for
new hotels or barred from beaches. Crowding and congestion, drugs and alcohol
problems, prostitution and increased crime levels occur more often when tourists
are constantly in and out of an area. Destinations dependent on tourism can be

affected by events such as terrorism, natural disasters and economic recession as

well.
