Beam Individual Design Package

Problem Statement

November 12, 2015

The problem to be solved is creating a beam that meets many constraints and
requirements. The beam can either be a Hollow Box Beam, I-beam, or H-beam. Each
member will design 3 different beams to present to the group. The group will then
pick what they think is the best beam. The beams cannot exceed 2x2 and have to
be 24 long. Each team will be given specific requirement for their beam. In this
case the beam number was 150806 and the constraints that go with this beam
number are:
X-Axis Load: 425Ib
Y-Axis Load: 200Ib
Beam Weight Restriction: 270g
X-Axis Deflection: .060 in<Deflection<.250in
Cost Limit: $11.50
Costs: Each beam with a different price around $2 and each glue joint with a cost of
$0.50
Span Length: 21in
Beam Length: 24in
Beam Size: 2in x 2in
Beam Symmetric about the cross-section centroidal axes.
The final beam will be decided by the entire team. The team will have to construct
the beam out of basswood obtained from the 1201 lumber yard. To construct the
beam, the team will use basswood, clamps, a hobby knife, Elmers Carpenters
Wood Glue. To build the beam the team will need to glue the pieces together using
the Wood Glue, and clamp the pieces down till they dry. Assumption of the wood
are:
Elasticity: 1.46 x 106psi
Density: 28Ibm/ft3
The team will then test the beam with a simple supported beam. The beam will
have to withstand the load without breaking and the deflection of the beam can not
be greater than .250in or less than .06in from a weight of 425Ib.

Decision
I-Beam Example 1 would be the best beam to use. It has a very low cost of $6.85.
The deflection is a very stable number at .173in. The safety factor is okay with a
deflection of 2.34in at a safety factor of 35%. The volume is excellent with a very
small volume of 19.5in3, which produces a good mass of 153.323g. And the strength
is good with a medium deflection size. This I-Beam is overall great choice compared
to the other two beams.
