Dealing with College Stress

For students, stress can take a huge toll on their mind and body. Stress is
almost guaranteed when you are a college student and if it is not
prevented then it needs to be dealt with. Without tolerating stress many
problems may arise for students. For college students, this usually means
depression, smoking, drug abuse, alcohol abuse, and even eating
disorders.
College students need a variety of ways on how to tolerate the stress that
comes with college. Helen Bland, of Georgetown University, wrote an
article that points out the many methods that college students use to cope
with stress. While doing a study among Millennial college students, she
found some of the most popular coping mechanisms used by students
(Bland). How you live your daily life influences greatly on how you tolerate
college stress.
Get Enough Sleep
Listen to music
Exercise
Eat Healthy Foods

A study conducted by Helen Bland found that

millennial students face the most strict school
requirements since 1945. During her studies she
also found that college students tend to rely upon
both common ways and newer methods to prevent
or reduce stress. Listening to music was
surprisingly the most regularly used coping
mechanism by college students, followed by
sleeping which was not as surprising. Click here for

In Blands studies, there was one particular lifestyle factor that would
contribute to higher stress tolerance, which was having supportive family,
friends, and teachers. This has helped me a lot in college. Many times
when I am having an anxiety attack from all of the college deadlines, I call
my mom who always knows what to say to relax me. During times of
stress, social support has been found to reduce psychological distress,
such as anxiety and depression, and promote psychological
adjustment (Bland). Knowing or feeling that you are loved and care for by
others helps individuals develop higher stress tolerance in college. Find

Stress among college students is a continuing problem that needs to be
addressed. Students are given a tremendous amount of workload without
any advice on how to deal with the stress. Colleges should provide not
only therapists on campus to help with college stress, but also provide
specific classes on how to cope with the stress. Classes should also be
structured for students to have the least amount of stress. In return college
students will perform better in school and lead healthier lives.
