Lesson # Parts of Plants in a

series of Plants lessons

Brief Lesson Description:

The lesson will introduce the parts of the plants for the kids by attracting them with the popular human
parts song (Head, shoulder, knees and Toes). Then teacher will transfer them to explore a plant to discover
its parts by using magnifying glass, and by touching. Through this stage, teacher will extend their
observation by putting more information from their curious questions. Then it will be another song about
plants parts. After that, will be a PowerPoint has compression between human and plant parts and will
mention what are the functions of these parts. Then it will be activities to evaluate their understanding, by
matching printed plant parts with its names, and another activity is to paste objects as it is a part on a poster.
Performance Expectation(s):
1-LS1-1
Use materials to design a solution to a human problem, how plants use their external parts that each one
has functions to do. Students will explore a real potted plant, to discover the parts of this plant. They will
have also magnifying glass to look at these parts closer.
Specific Learning Outcomes:
At the end of the lesson,
Realize similarities between human and plant parts
Distinguish the parts of the plants
Get an idea on the main function of these parts
Narrative / Background Information
Prior Student Knowledge:
Students understand that plants are alive.
May know that plants need water to grow, without knowing the needs of sun and soil.
Identify some parts of plant, like leaves, flowers, seeds
Science & Engineering Practices:
Constructing explanations and
designing solutions:
(Students will extend their prior
knowledge for flowering plant)
Obtaining, evaluating, and
communication information:
(At the end of the experiment,
students will draw a plant from
their home, and write its parts)

Disciplinary Core Ideas:

Structure and Function:
(All organisms have external
parts, will realize similarities
comparison between human
and plant)
Information Process:
(Plants have parts, and need
sources to grow, proper amount
of water, sun, soil

Crosscutting Concepts:
Structure and Function:
(At the end of the
experiment, students will
draw a plant from their
home, and write its parts)
(Will discover a real plant
using interesting materials
like magnifying glass)

Possible Preconceptions/Misconceptions:
Some students may thoughts that plant is alive, so it needs food to still alive and not die.
They thoughts that food is the same what animal and human eat. Plants need food, but for plants it called
element which they absorb them from the soil.
LESSON PLAN 5-E Model
ENGAGE: ( 7 min ) On the Floor
Opening Activity Access Prior Learning / Stimulate Interest / Generate Questions:
1- Greeting & Reminding Rules
It is important to do it as routine, to save the lesson time, and kids learn by routine.
2- Video Song:
Human Parts, Play video song to get engage students to start the lesson.
The song is (Head, shoulder, knees & toes Body Parts), this video is good beginning for them to review
the human body parts that will make them to make connections between human and plants (mentally).
And to facilitate to the teacher to talk about plant and describe its parts. Its perfect also to activate
them (physically) as its their last class of the day.

3- Quick Discussion:
Quick discussion with whole class about the topic, ex:
Q: What am I? (A: Human, I am alive)
Q: Tell me another thing alive? Something green! (A: plant, trees)
Q: What makes a plant to grow? (A: soil, water or rain, sun)
Q: What do we need to grow a plant? (A: same thing)
EXPLORE: ( 15 min ) 1- Exploring: Parts of flowering Plant: (On the table - Groups)
Material: (small potted plant magnifying glass printable photo, plants parts with its names plate)
Each table will have the above materials
Students will explore and discover the plant, and compare them with the photo
After discovering, Teacher will ask kids to point some parts of the plant
Teacher will give some information like, look at the roots, look at this part in the soil, this is roots
2- Video: (On the Floor)
Parts of Plants, play a video song about parts of the plants, it has the same tune for the previous song of
body parts, but this time will be for the plants parts. It is perfect to lead the kids to made the
connection and the competition of the both parts.

Lesson 1 Parts of Plants

EXPLAIN: ( 10 min )
Concepts Explained and Vocabulary Defined:
1- Presentation PPT: (On the Floor)
Compression between similarities of human (Me/You) and a Plant on the parts. Then what each part do
which is what is the function of this part? And what are the needs of the plant (Sun, Soil, Water)
2- Vocabulary:
- Plant = Tree
- Grow
- roots

- Stem
- Leaf
- Leaves

- Flower
- Seed
- Needs

ELABORATE: ( 15 min )
Applications and Extensions:
Students will be divided into 2 groups.
Group 1: High and Medium to high level with assistant (On the table). Group 2: Low and Medium level with
Me (On the Floor).
1- Flash Cards & Worksheet Activity:
Group 1: First will order the parts of the plants from the flash cards, then match its name to the part
picture in pairs. When they finish, they will have worksheets with drawn flower and vocabulary box,
kids will label each part and write them beside the part. For extra time: they can color the flower
picture by the colors on their table.
2- Poster Activity:
- Material needed: Poster, real leaves, 4 green stew, wool yarns, 3 cupcake paper, seeds, glue. The
poster is A5 size, already painted a background of soil sky with smiley sun.
- Group 2: Will sit on the carpet in a big circle and I will be sitting with them, the poster will be in the
middle of the circle, with the materials. The kids will pass a box contain their name in piece of paper
while singing (What in the box?), when they finish song the kid will choose one name to help him
to paste one part of the plant on the poster.
EVALUATE: ( 3 min )

1- Formative Monitoring (Questioning / Discussion):

Discuss with the 2 groups what they did, give brief description.
2- Summative Assessment (Quiz / Project / Report):
Next class, students will draw a plant in their home, then point and write the name of the parts.
