Music 110-01
Romeo Santos at MSG
Over the years I have developed an appreciation for bachata as it is a great part of my
culture. My favorite bachata artist is Romeo Santos who I had the pleasure to attend one of his
concerts on February 2, 2012. Santos performed live at Madison Square Garden and the concert
didnt kick off until 9:30pm. As he began to perform his classic hits, the crowd was overflowed
with joy and we all sang along. His lyrics struck many and they became emotional as they could
relate to them with their own personal experiences. His music made me want to find a partner to
dance with but there was little to no space. A typical phrase I heard that night from those of
Dominican descent was Diablo que bachata , necesito un trago in other words, meaning
Damn, what a bachata, I need a drink. The crowd consisted of many different races but we all
shared one thing in common, which was the love for Santos music. While at the concert, I
indulged in a conversation with an Ecuadorian girl and I realized you dont have to be from a
certain race to enjoy a genre of music. Music is simply preference and everyone should be able
to listen to what appeals to their ears.
While looking at the stage I noticed all of the instruments being used, which included
guitars, bongos, bass and guiras. I was amazed due to the fact that so many individuals were
playing these instruments to produce this beautiful sound. Suddenly as he performed Debate de
cuatro he brought out two of the most influential artist Anthony Santos and Luis Vargas. The
crowd erupted with cheers and we were ecstatic to witness these two greats. The fourth bachata
artist in the song Raulin Rodriguez wasnt there but Romeo Santos had another individual sing
his part. After this song everything settled down and these three men sat down. Anthony Santos

and Luis Vargas began to have a battle in which they went back and forth singing their greatest
hits. Overall the battle was pretty much a tie as these two artist have many great songs. There
was a moment when they also faced while using a guitar. Vargas used a bottle to play a guitar
and the crowd was astonished. Anthony Santos responded by playing the guitar behind his head.
This concert was a great experience as I saw my favorite bachata artist and many other
greats. Romeo Santos in my eyes changed the game with his soft voice and many have tried to
imitate him but havent been as successful. Bachata is a music not just for those from Dominican
Republic but for everyone who finds it appealing. In my opinion you dont even have to
understand the lyrics or the language as long as you enjoy the instruments and the music itself.
