K-3 STREAM Fair

Workbook

Introduction

What is a STREAM fair? STREAM combines the disciplines of Science, Technology,
Research (including Reading & wRiting!), Engineering, Applied Arts, and Mathematics. Like the
Science Fair for students in grades 4-6, the goal of the STREAM fair is to make the sciences hands-
on and fun. Unlike our program for our older students, which focuses on the scientific method as
outlined by Brookhaven National Labs regional science fair criteria, Remsenburg-Speonks K-3
STREAM fair provides more options for our younger learners to get involved. This K-3 Workbook
will guide students and parents through this process.

Younger students will need adult support and guidance, which is why the science fair is
completely voluntary for this age group. By guiding the students through the scientific method
beginning as young as Kindergarten, our goal is to have independent, self-directed investigators
by the time students reach upper elementary.

Getting Started: Submit Your Science Fair Contract

The Science Fair Contract asks students to think about three possible topics and
evaluate them based on the topic checklist. Once the contract is approved, keep going and
have fun!

STREAM: Research!

Want to learn more about the solar system? How about desert
ecosystems? Dinosaurs? Find an interesting science book in the library or at
home. Read it and then write a report about what youve learned.

STREAM: Engineering & Technology!

Engineers apply science, math, and technology to create

solutions to real-world problems. Let your imagination run wild!
Create simple machines, build robotics, create architectural
structures, investigate electronics, experiment with aerodynamics,
create a coding masterpiece, etc!

STREAM: Applied Art!

Applied art seeks to make beautiful everyday, useful

objects. Are you interested in computer graphic design? Thats
applied art! Have you ever sat in class and wished for a more
comfortable chair? Creating a chair with the user-experience in
mind is also applied art! Applied art is not limited to visual arts,
but also includes music and performance arts.

STREAM: Mathematics!

Explore math concepts such as numbers, shapes, geometry,

patterns, probability, averages, etc. Discover the math in nature and
music. Count! Measure! Make charts!

Make Your Own STREAM!

Try combining STREAM ideas in new ways. For example,

after youve read about the photosynthesis and wrote your
research report, design and build your own windowsill garden.

STREAM: Science!

Create an experiment using the scientific method. This section is a

simplified version of our Grades 4-6 Workbook, which goes into greater depth
and reflects the Brookhaven National Lab rubric. Using the following pages to
create your experiment is excellent practice for the Science Fair in the upper
grades.

What is the Scientific Method?

Scientists use the scientific method to investigate how things work. The
scientific method is a process and way of thinking. It has a set of rules and
procedures. It allows other researchers to try your experiment.

This section outline the basic steps of the scientific method, which
include the following:

1. Testable Question
2. Hypothesis
3. Materials
4. Procedure
5. Results
6. Conclusion
7. Presentation
8. Reflection

1. Testable Question

A science fair experiment begins with a testable question.

The testable question sets the stage for your science
experiment. It will become your roadmap. It turns an idea
into a true Science Fair Project! Check out our Examples of
Class Science Fair Projects on our website to see samples of
testable questions and projects in action. So, what does a
science fair experiment look like anyway? A testable
question is often in the following fill-in-the-blank format

What is the effect of _____________________________ on ______________________________?

-- OR --

How does ________________________________________ affect ___________________________?

Write down the one thing you
Write down what will you

will change in your experiment.
measure in your experiment.

This is called the independent variable.
This is called the dependent variable.

To make sure your experiment is fair, write down the things that you will
keep the same during your experiment.

These are called control variables.

2. Hypothesis

What do I think will happen in my experiment?

Take a guess! If you want to get fancy, you can also explain
why you made your prediction. The best part is that it
doesnt matter if your hypothesis turns out to be correct or
not because its all about the scientific method!

4. Procedure

What are the steps in my experiment?

Make a numbered list.

5. Results

Do your experiment using your plan from steps 1-4. Collect your data by
making observations or taking measurements. If you used the testable
question format, you can easily create a data table to record your observations
and/or measurements in the following format:

Independent Variable
What was the one thing
you changed in your
experiment?

Dependent Variable
What did you measure
and/or observe?

Write your data in these boxes.

You may also want to turn your data table into a pictograph or other chart.

What happened when you did your experiment? Describe your results.

6. Conclusion

What did you find out? Do the results match your prediction of what you
thought would happen? Do the data support your hypothesis from step #2?
Check one of the conclusions below:

Yes, the data support the hypothesis. The results matched my
prediction.

No, the data do not support the hypothesis. The results were different
than what I thought would happen.

Remember that it doesnt matter if your prediction turned out the way you
thought it would because the scientific method is all about the journey of
discovery! If your experiment didnt come out the way you expected it, you
can make a prediction about why you think that happened.

If you want to go further, you can make suggestions for future researchers
based on what you learned from your science fair project.

Trifold Displays

Show everyone what you learned! Heres how:

Purchase a standard tabletop tri-fold science fair display board

(36 x 48), which is available at most office supply and craft stores.
Hand write or type a title and describe what you learned.
Get creative! Use art and scrapbooking supplies. Make it colorful.
Take photos of your STREAM project and/or bring in 3D props.

Below is an example of a science fair trifold display. There are many more on
the schools Science Fair Webpage.

Self-evaluate using the rubric below.

Area of Assessment

I learned about STREAM ideas. My project

included Science, Technology, Research,
Engineering, Arts, and/or Math.

I presented what I learned on a trifold
