Abstract

SUBMERGED ARC WELDING TECHNOLOGY

The American Welding Society(AWS) defines Submerged Arc Welding (SAW)
as follows: “An arc welding process which produces joint of metals by heating
them with an arc between metals electrodes and the work. The arc and molten
metal are shielded by a blanket of granular, fusible material on the work.
Pressure is not used, and filler metal is obtained from the electrodes and some
times from the supplemental source(welding rod, flux or metal granules).”

4. PREPARITION FOR WELD

Key SAW process variables :-

• Wire feed speed (main factor in welding current control), Travel speed

• Arc voltage AND Electrode wire diameter

• Flux and electrode classification and type

• Polarity and current type (AC or DC) & variable balance AC current

Material applications :-

• Carbon steels (structural and vessel construction), Low alloy steels

• Stainless steels, Nickel-based alloys
