MATH IS ART!
A Mini-Project on Integers & Absolute Value
Project Essential
Questions
- How can art be revolutionary?
- How is location defined by
ordered pairs?
- What is absolute value?
- How does absolute value
relate to distance of a
vertical/horizontal line within
a coordinate plane?
New California
Standards
Addressed:
6.NS.5 - Understand that
positive and negative numbers
are used together to describe
quantities having opposite
directions or values; use
positive and negative numbers
to represent quantities in realworld contexts, explaining the
meaning of 0 in each situation.
6.NS.6 - Understand a rational
number as a point on the
number line. Extend number
line diagrams and coordinate
axes familiar from previous
grades to represent points
with negative numbers.

Project Overview
Everyone loves art. Art is a form of communication and artistic
representation of views, perceptions, opinions and even
monumental moments in history. Because this has been a year full
of political revolution, and the upcoming presidential election, we
will be representing significant art pieces as math
representations. This is a great and engaging way for students to
learn integers. Students will learn the four quadrants of a
coordinate plane, dierence between negative and positive
numbers, comparing positive and negative numbers, absolute
value, reflective ordered pairs, graphing, and finding distance of
lines using absolute value. Students will be able to link math and
art as one.

Project Objectives
Choose a revolutionary art piece that will be transposed onto a
coordinate grid."
Your art piece must include the following:"
Include a visible x and y- axis."
Accurately label 50 ordered pairs within all 4 quadrants"
Standards Contd
6.NS.7 - Understand ordering
and absolute value of rational
numbers.
6.NS.8 - Solve real-world and
mathematical problems by
graphing points in all four
quadrants of the coordinate
plane. Include use of coordinates
and absolute value to find
distances between points with
the same first coordinate or the
same second coordinate.
