Inequality, the Worst Policy
Inequality is all around the world yet can be changed. As people are being harshly
discriminated against a change needs to happen. This monumental action all starts with you. It is
obvious that inequality is a reoccurring theme in todays society. Many innocent people are
experiencing this discrimination everyday making this a huge problem for our society. Overall in
present day America, inequality has been a constant struggle and is seen widely in political
events yet also everyday life; this discrimination is portrayed commonly through the media and
literature.
It is common knowledge to many that inequality, or the lack of equality, is very relevant
in America yet most dont know how often this wretched concept happens in the courthouse to
most if not all races. One shocking example of bias taking place in the courthouse is from a
Supreme Court judge himself. A CNN article in 2015 stated that Antonin Scalia, a Supreme
Court judge, made the remark that African Americans belong in lesser colleges (Kopan). This
kind of statement not only shows extreme bias towards other races but also how the most
important court in America even has inequality. Someone of his power should not be showing
such a bias opinion. One thing to mention is the criminal justice system in America. According to
Daniel DAmico he stated the fact that African Americans are more likely to be imprisoned than
to get married or go to college. This statistic just shows how much bias law in America has. All
of these facts relate closely to the book To Kill a Mockingbird. The book mainly focuses on

American life during the 1930s and shows how prominent discrimination was at the time. One
character in the book is a lawyer named Atticus. He gives his opinion on bias in law to his child
in this quote, Atticus are we going to win it? No honey. Then whysimply because we were
licked a hundred years before we started is no reason for us not to try to win (Lee, 101). This
quote shows that he knows there is inequality in the courtroom yet has the determination to still
make an effort. This character is a great representation on how we should be today. Though we
know inequality/bias is present in law, it is very prominent in just regular society as well.
All around the world racism is an issue. This type of inequality usually happens to all
races and can be seen in schools, homes, and other events. Racism is also very much present in
the media. A very relevant example of this is the new Chinese poster for Star Wars: The Force
Awakens. Very soon after the modified poster was released in China many people noticed a lack
of colored characters. This led to many tweeters calling it profoundly wrong (Griffiths) and
even people like Ray Kwong to speak out about the matter. Another article reinforces this idea of
racism and gives examples of it in a global scale. The author of the article (Anup Shah) even
states that In the U.S. racism is a well-known issue. The article also gives examples of how
racism is worldwide. Like inequality in law the book To Kill a Mockingbird also gives
examples of racism. In chapter 11 the character Mrs. Dubose is introduced. She is obviously very
racist and is very bitter to other races. She makes constant fun of Atticus stating to his daughter
that Your fathers no better than the nigger trash he works for (Lee, 135). This is a good
representation of how people viewed other races at the time. Overall the book is a great example
of how racism was a problem back then and still is now.
One thing to remember is that the U.S. can be improved upon by anyone. Just a small
change could make things like police brutality and hate crimes a rarity on the 7:00 news. If

Americans could recognize each other as Americans, not as black or white, this world could be a
much better place. We should focus on how people are getting unfair treatment and how it is
plain unacceptable. Citizens need to take action and make racism a thing of the past. Everyone
can make a change no matter the color.
