What is the Digestive System?

The digestive system is a group of organs within your
body that works together to convert food into energy and
basic nutrients to feed your entire body.
The digestive system makes up a large part of the human
body and is one of the most essential systems within the
body.

How is the Digestive System organized?

It consists of these five main parts:

The mouth
The esophagus
The stomach
The intestines
The anus

How do the parts of the Digestive System function?

The mouth is where the food enters the body.
The esophagus is a long tube which the food travels down
through.
The stomach is where the food is stored and broken down by
stomach acids.
The intestines is where the food is digested and used for its
nutrients, and turned into waste.
The anus is the opening at the end of the digestive system
where the waste is expelled.

How does the Digestive System work with other systems?

The digestive system works very closely with the circulatory
system to get the absorbed nutrients distributed through
your body.
The circulatory system also carries chemical signals from
your endocrine system that control the speed of digestion.

How do diseases affect the digestive system?

Irritable Bowel Syndrome

affects the muscles in the intestines

Diverticulitis

occurs when pouches in the large intestine become infected and inflamed

Acid Reflux

stomach acid backing up into the esophagus to create a burning sensation or sour taste in the mouth

Fatal digestive disease

Pica

eat nonfood items

10% of kids have it but adults do it too

Pagophagia- the compulsive eating of ice

Coprophagia- eating (often animal) feces

Cells in the Stomach:

Parietal: Secretes hydrochloric acid

Chief: Secretes pepsinogen

Goblet: Secretes mucus

ECL: Secretes histamine (stimulates

parietal cells)

D: Secretes somatostatin (reduces effect of

histamine)

G: Secretes gastrin (stimulates ECL cells)

Tissues in the Digestive System:

Muscular: Churns food and other

stomach contents
Glandular: Produces acids and
enzymes
Epithelial: Covers inner and outer
surfaces
