Rev. Matthew Sturtevant

Scripture: John 11.1-44

In 1992, Dr. Richard Swenson wrote a book
titled Margin: Restoring Emotional, Physical, Financial, and Time Reserves to Overloaded Lives in which he rightly diagnosed the dynamic in
our society in which we simply do not have any extra room (or margin, like on a piece
of paper) in the midst of our overbooked and overloaded lives. It has
been republished again and again,
most likely because we still havent
figured out in twenty-plus years
how to change. In fact, not only
have we still not learned his lesson,
but find ourselves with even less
margin than we once did. What
does this marginless existence mean
for our spiritual lives, our schedules,
our bodies, our money, or our relationships? Together, at the beginning of a new year, we will explore together what
Scriptures teach us about margin, and about a healthy faith-response to our overcrowded culture.
