The Diary Project for the novel The Outsiders

1.

You will choose one of the following characters from the novel
and write a diary from their point of view (first person).

2. You will be required to write 6 diary entries from the events

which take place in the novel between chapters 5 12.

CHARACTERS:

Pony, Johnny, Dally, Cherry

Think about..
How would your character react to the events that took place specifically
in Chapters 5 -12? What would they tell a friend on the phone that night?
Do not re- write the events, be certain to react with thoughts & feelings.
You may write how your character would change events if possible or
question the outcome of events.
EXAMPLE (based on Chapter 1 later the same night as written by the
character of DARRY.)
You would write something to the effect of:

Dear Diary,

October 14, 1962

I had the scare of my life tonight. Pony boy was jumped by the socs
on his way home from a movie. My heart felt like it stopped when I
saw him on the ground. I thought he was going to be dead when we
saw him lying in the street surrounded by four of those punks, hitting
and kicking him on the groundughhhh. Its the first time I have ever
felt like a real parent. Anger surged through my veins and I wanted to
throw each soc off my brother. I never realized how much being
responsible for someone younger truly gives you a sense of loyalty
and protectiveness. I have never felt the weight of my responsibility
quite that strongly before.holy, do I really miss mom and dad. Its
difficult being head of the household. I am always worried about my
brothers and us being able to stay together as a family. I couldnt take
it if we got separated. I am going to have gray hair soon, and I am
only twenty years old.
