pledgedloyaltytoEnglandandagreedtoobeythelawsforthegeneralgoodofthe

ColonialRegions
The13coloniesweredividedinto3geographicalgroups:NewEngland,Middleand
Southerncolonies.

NewEnglandColonies
TheNewEnglandcolonieswere:NewHampshire,Massachusetts,RhodeIsland,and
Connecticut.Theyhadrockysoil,timber,andgoodfishing.
TheNewEnglandcolonieswereestablishedbypersonsseekingreligiousfreedom.
Subsistencefarmingwasusedduetotherockysoil.
ThomasHookerfoundedtheConnecticutcolonyafterbecomingdissatisfiedbythe
PuritansinMassachusetts.
RogerWilliamsfoundedtheRhodeIslandcolonyafterbeingbanishedbythePuritansin
Massachusetts.

MiddleColonies
TheMiddlecolonieswere:NewYork,Pennsylvania,NewJersey,andDelaware.They
hadlargefarmswithproductsusedforexport.
Farmingexportsarecalledcashcropsbecausetheyaregrownandsoldtomakeaprofit.

WilliamPennfoundedPennsylvaniatopracticeideasoftoleranceandequality.
GeorgeCalvert(LordBaltimore)foundedMarylandasasafeplaceforallChristian
religions,withspecialfocusonCatholics.

SouthernColonies
TheSoutherncolonieswere:Maryland,Virginia,NorthCarolina,SouthCarolina,and
Georgia.Theyhadfertilesoilandawarmclimate,whichisidealforagriculture(farming).
TheplantationsystemwasfavoredintheSouthernColoniesduetothewarmclimate.
EnslavedAfricanswereusedinthisregionmorethanintheNewEnglandorMiddle
colonies

ColonialEconomy

TheTriangularTradewasaseriesofcolonialtraderoutesbetweenEngland,WestAfrica,

SlavetradingwasamajorpartoftheTriangularTradebetweenAfricaandtheAmericas

Mercantilismisaneconomictheorythatstatesanationspowerdependsonitswealth.

ColonialGovernment
TheHouseofBurgesses,establishedin1619,wasthefirstexampleofrepresentative
governmentinthecolonies.
TheMayflowerCompactestablishedgovernmentforthePlymouthcolony.Signers
pledgedloyaltytoEnglandandagreedtoobeythelawsforthegeneralgoodofthe
colony.
TheFundamentalOrdersofConnecticutwasthefirstwrittenconstitutioninAmerica.
TheEnglishcoloniesdevelopedrepresentativegovernmentsandinheritedatraditionof
legalrightsfromEngland.

ColonialSociety
Colonialartfocusedheavilyonportraits.ThemostfamouscolonialartistwasJohn
SingletonCopley.
TheGreatAwakeningwasamovement,beginninginthe1720s,thatemphasizedthe
importanceofeducationandthebeliefthatallpeopleareequalbeforeGod.
TheEnlightenmentwasanintellectualmovement,beginninginEuropeintheearly1700s,
thatemphasizedreason(logic)andselfrelianceratherthantradition.Itwasheavily
influencedbyphilosopherssuchasJohnLockeandJeanJacquesRousseau.
TheEnlightenmentgainedpopularityinthecoloniesduringthe1740sand1750s.
