The sexual abuse of children is one of the most horrific crimes in our society.

Every case
represents a tragedy, and even one child who experiences sexual abuse is one too many.
While we are unable to comment on specific cases, the Department of Justice can advise that
the Criminal Code of Canada provides comprehensive prohibitions against all forms of child
sexual abuse, including some of the strongest provisions in the Western world.
The mandate of the Minister of Justice includes a review of the changes in our criminal justice
system to ensure that we are increasing the safety of our communities, addressing gaps and
ensuring that current provisions are aligned with the objectives of the system.
