Ontario Curricular Expectations: (specific pg. 36) 1.4 demonstrate an understanding of the
information and ideas in oral texts by retelling the story or restating the information, including the
main idea (e.g., use time-order words, such as first, then, next, finally, to retell a story they have
heard)
Lesson Objectives: activate prior knowledge, interpret text, retell a story
Social Objectives: attentive listening, mutual respect, creative expression in art
MENTAL SET
Show the cover of the book The Lion and the Mouse. Ask questions (Who might the story be about?
What may happen in this story? Where do you think the story takes place?)
Have them discuss the questions one by one, first with their elbow partner and then with the class
STATED OBJECTIVES AND PURPOSE:
Today you are going to:
Retell a story by listening to The Lion & the Mouse that the teacher reads
Think-pair-share before, during, and after the book
Participate in the Hop Forward game
Draw pictures to retell the story in order of events that happened, and share your retelling with
a partner
INPUT/ MODELLING/ DEMONSTRATION: (within 15 min practice)
- Read the story
- Engage and lead students through the think-pair-shares
- Lead the Hop Forward game
- Show a finished picture retelling of the story, listen to students retelling the story and showing their
graphic drawing of it (asking questions for clarification of students where necessary)
