OBJECTIVES:
Ontario Curricular Expectations: (specific pg. 36) 1.4 demonstrate an understanding of the
information and ideas in oral texts by retelling the story or restating the information, including the
main idea (e.g., use time-order words, such as first, then, next, finally, to retell a story they have
heard)
Lesson Objectives: activate prior knowledge, interpret text, retell a story
Social Objectives: attentive listening, mutual respect, creative expression in art
MENTAL SET

Estimated time: 4 min

Show the cover of the book The Lion and the Mouse. Ask questions (Who might the story be about?
What may happen in this story? Where do you think the story takes place?)
Have them discuss the questions one by one, first with their elbow partner and then with the class
STATED OBJECTIVES AND PURPOSE:
Today you are going to:

Retell a story by listening to The Lion & the Mouse that the teacher reads
Think-pair-share before, during, and after the book
Participate in the Hop Forward game
Draw pictures to retell the story in order of events that happened, and share your retelling with
a partner
INPUT/ MODELLING/ DEMONSTRATION: (within 15 min practice)
- Read the story
- Engage and lead students through the think-pair-shares
- Lead the Hop Forward game
- Show a finished picture retelling of the story, listen to students retelling the story and showing their
graphic drawing of it (asking questions for clarification of students where necessary)

1) Show cover of The Lion & the Mouse (Aesop) and engage students in
questions to Think-pair-share

Who might the characters be (may need to ask what a character


is)? Where is this story taking place? What might happen?

2) Read the story aloud, pause to ask for questions about characters,

3) Hop Forward Game

Students line up facing the teacher and answer questions/


examine statements the teacher poses about the book

If the statement is true (the book is about a mouse and a lion) or


they answer correctly (who are the characters?) they all jump
forward, if false they stay put & explain the right answer

Game ends when they jump to the finish line

*Make sure students are modeling respect, raising their hand


to answer questions, not getting angry at other students

4) Independently, students draw their own graphic retelling of the story


on the worksheet provided (teacher should model their own finished
drawing first and retell the story based on their pictures)
*Make sure to use key words (characters, setting, first, then, last)
5) Students share drawing with their elbow partner & retell the story
using key words (first, then, next, last)
CHECKS FOR UNDERSTANDING:
- students ask/ answer questions with their partner during the pauses in the read aloud
- student participates in Hop Forward game
- student draws graphic retelling of story
- student shares their individual drawing with a classmate, and asks clarifying questions of their
classmates drawing
CLOSURE : Community Circle where students raise their drawing to answer yes to teacher
questions. Some questions will be Whos drawing shows both the major characters? Who were the
major characters? What happened first? Who drew the lion catching the mouse?
