Reduced Vertical Separation Minima (RVSM)
RVSM Airspace: RVSM airspace is any designated airspace/route between FL 290 and
FL 410 (both levels inclusive) where aircraft are separated vertically by 1000 ft (300 m)
Indian Airspace and neighbouring airspace has become RVSM airspace between FL 290
and FL 410, inclusive of FL 290 and FL 410 on 27mNovember, 2003.
Reduced vertical separation minima or minimum (RVSM) is the reductiorof the
standard vertical separation required between aircraft flying between §L290
(29,000 ft) and FL410 (41,000 ft) inclusive, from 2,000 feet to 1,000 feet THis
therefore increases the number of aircraft that can safely fly inf'a particular
volume of airspace.
To overcome this (in part), a system of reduced Verti€a} separation is
applied whereby the 1000 ft separation between FLsiis mairitained up to FL410.
Above FL410, the inaccuracy in the altimeter operatiomis too great for
continuation of the reduced minima. This immediately doubles the available FLs
between FL290 and the limit of the application, FL410.
This standard is known as ReducedWerti¢alSeparation Minima (RVSM)

09871866290FOLLOWING PROCEDURE TO BE FOLLWED IN RVSM AIRSPACE,
When changing levels, the aircraft shall not be allowed to overshoot or undershoot the
cleared flight level by more than 45 m (150 ft);
Ensure that the altitude-alerting system is operative;
At intervals of one hour, crosschecks between the primary altimeters shall be made Ay
minimum of two will need to agree within #60 m (+200 ft).
Failure to meet this condition will require that the altimetry system be reported as defeGtive
and notified to ATC;
Before entering RVSM airspace, the initial altimeter cross check of primary and standby
altimeters shall be recorded
Examples of equipment failures, which shall be notified, to ATC are:
(a) failure of all automatic altitude-control systems aboard the aircraft;
(b) loss of redundancy of altimetry systems,
(c) loss of thrust on an engine necessitating descept?On
(d) any other equipment failure affecting the ability to maiptain cleared flight level (CFL);
