toutilizeit.Scratchisavisualprogramminglanguage,inwhichthatonecanmanipulate
programmingelementsvisuallyinsteadofusingtexttochangetheseelements.Scratchcanbe
definedasablendofprogramminglanguages,asthereareelementsfromeachlanguagefound
inScratch.Duetothis,theskillslearnedinScratchcanbeappliedtootherprogramming
languages.

Thepurposeformyindividuallydevelopedprogramwastotrytoentertainpeople.Iwantedto
makeagamethatwassimilarto
ZeldaII:TheAdventureofLink
,whereitwouldbea
sidescrollinggamewithRPGelements.Userswouldcontroltheplayerandjumpacrossthe
onlylevelIputinthegame.Inthelevel,thereisonly1enemythattheplayercaninteractwith.
Iftheplayerdoesnotdefeattheenemy,theytakedamage,andifenoughdamageistaken,
thentheydie.IalsoaddedSpadesbestfriend,Lilac,asawaytohavethebackdropstransition,
andrestartthegame,andseeiftheycandoanycoolglitches.Overall,Ifeltthatpeopleplaying
mygamecouldenjoythelittlequirksthatoccurhereandthere,andImyselfcouldseehow
frustrating(butsuccessful)itfeelstodevelopagame.

Thisispartofthecodeformygamefortheplayersprite,Spade.Whenthegreenflagis
clicked,itbeginstoexecutetheprogramwritten.TheSpeedvariableissetto7,asthatallows
forallofSpadesspritestobemanaged,andcontrolwhichonehedisplays.TheStance
variablecorrespondstooneofthecostumesinhissprite.Spadecanmoverightiftheplayer
pressestherightarrowkey,andifthehittestoftherighthitboxisequaltozero.Thesamegoes
forwhentheplayerpressestheleftarrowkey,exceptthatSpademovesleft.Inboth,they
containthevariablexVel,whichallowshimtomovefasterandsmootherwhilemovingina
directiononthexaxis.HisyVelwhentouchingeithergrassorgrass2allowshimtostayonthe
ground,butwhentheuparrowispressed,hejumpsintheair,andcomesbackdown.


ThispictureinparticularwasoneofthethingsfrustratingmethemostwhileIwasmakingmy
game.Originally,Spadewouldflipupsidedownwhentheleftarrowkeywaspressed.Idouble
checkedmycodetomakesureIdidntdoanythingwrongwhenmakingit.Afteracoupledays
offrustration,Iclickedontheiicontolookattheinformationaboutthesprite.Itturnsoutthat
therotationstyleforSpadesspritewassetatflipratherthanlateral.
