Basketball Unit

Rational:
Basketball is one of the biggest sports in the school environment. I
believe there are two big reasons for this. First it is a sport that can be
played at a variety of different skill levels so those students who are
not as gifted in the sport can still play. Second there are a large
number of variations to the sport that makes it applicable to so many
students. This makes it one of the more anticipated units in PE by the
students. Although some teachers see it as the sport that causes the
most fights/drama in class and are hesitant to use it as a full unit.
Although, if all students are taught towards mastery of the sport and
gain the fundamental skills that are involved, students will be more
skilled and knowledgeable making them less likely to become
frustrated and cause the issues so many teachers face. Basketball is
also a great sport for PE and it reaches so many aspects of the
curriculum. Teamwork, fine motor control, gross motor control,
locomotor skills and non-locomotor skills are all used in this unit. By
developing these motor skills, body control, and teamwork basketball
is a very effective PE unit.

Students will develop skills that will improve on their

locomotor skills through drills involving running,
jumping and repeated stops and starts.
Students will develop their non-locomotor skills with
drills and games that will develop their ability to twist
using core to pass the ball harder, pivot on one foot,
balance after coming to a quick stop, and
squatting/using legs to shoot.
Students will develop their manipulative skills by
sending and receiving the basketball during passing
drills. They will also develop hand eye coordination and
their directional abilities through shooting drills and
games.
Students will develop their communication skills by
having positive interactions with teammates. As well
through positive talking during play, encouraging and
expressing feelings in a positive manner.

Students will develop and show their ability to

demonstrate fair play. This will be done through their
honesty while calling fouls during the game as well as
following the rules and regulations of the game. Doing
this will result in the student having a better experience
during the game as well as gaining respect from
classmates.
Students will develop their teamwork practices during
most of this unit. Basketball is very reliant on using
teamwork to be successful and failure to work as a team
results in less fun and more negative interactions.
Student will find that they more they work together as a
team the more fun they will have and the better their
experience in the class will be.
Students will demonstrate effort in this unit by
participating in every class and potentially doing the
activity outside of class. Whether it be through the
school basketball team, another league, or a casual
game with friends at lunch or outside of school.
Students will participate safely by following the rules of
the game and guidelines put in place for outside of the
activity. During the game students who are not playing
should remain on the side of the court, so they are less
of a hazard to the teams playing. Making sure that eye
contact is made before passing the ball, not tripping
fellow classmates, and not pushing/pulling on people
who shoot are some big rules to follow to insure safety
for all participants.
