DrugTestinginSchool

Therandomdrugtestingofstudents,typicallytheschoolathletes,isoftenconsidereda
preventivemeasuretothewidespreaduseofdrugsinschools.However,notallsurveysor
publishersagreeontheeffectivenessofthismethodeachbringingamultitudeofreasonsforand
againsttheuseofsuchamethod.Whilemanypeoplebelievethatthetheuseofdrugtestingis
ineffective,notdiscouragingstudentsfromusingthem,othersdisagreeandsaytheopposite.One
importantfactorthatmanygroupsbringupisthecostofthedrugtests.Withthisisinminditis
importanttolookatandexamine,duringthecourseofthisresearch,whetherdrugtestsare
effectiveenoughtomakethehighcostworthwhile.Doingthisresearchisnecessaryfortwo
reasons.Thefirstandmostimportantreasonforthisresearchistofindoutthehowrhetorichas
anaffectonone'sbeliefs,language,speech,andwriting.DuringtheresearchofthistopicIwill
lookforandreadessaysandarticlesonrandomdrugtestinginschoolsandseehowtherhetoric
usedbytheauthoraffectsmybeliefs,language,writing,etc.Thereasonthatthisissovitalto
lookatandexaminetheauthorsuseofrhetoricistoallowmetoknowthatwhenIam
influencedtobelievesomethingIambeingjustlyinfluencedandnotduetomyemotionsorprior
beliefs.Additionally,itisalsoimportanttofindoutwhethertheuseofdrugtestingiseffectiveor
acceptableintheschoolenvironmentandtoseewhetherornottheyarecosteffective.

Severalsourceshavebeenfundamentalinhelpingshowthedifferentsidesofthis
argument.OnearticlebyUSATodaycalledPrinciple:DrugTestingStudentsWorksisa
primeexampleofshowingthepositiveeffectsofrandomdrugtesting.Inthearticletheauthor,
DonnaLeinwand,saysthatthenumberofstudentstestingpositivefordrugtestinghasdecreased
sincethelaunchofthisplan.OntheotherhandanotherarticleStudyFindsRandomDrug
TestingDoesntDeterHighSchoolStudentsSubstanceUsewrittenbyCeliaVimontsaysthe
exactopposite.Boththesearticlesshowrhetoricineffectandhelptoexaminehowrhetoric
affectsthereader.
