1. Please list your expected personal or extracurricular commitments, your class schedule for
next semester and the times you are available.

2. Why do you want to be a The Daily Tar Heel columnist? What perspective or voice do you
bring that DTH readers need to hear?

3. What general theme do you propose for your columns? Why are you qualified to write on that
theme? How will you produce eight strong columns on that theme?

4. What makes a good columnist in a community newspaper?

5. How will you approach the original reporting for your columns? What relevant experience do
you have?

6. Who are some of your favorite columnists or those you read regularly? What makes them
good?

7. Include at least one sample 600-word column on a local topic of your choice. Samples will be
judged on clarity and accuracy, as well as strength in articulating a decisive angle.

8. Write 200-400 words on what it means to be a Tar Heel. Be creative!

*Individuals planning to run for office or to serve on a campaign in any capacity this year are not
eligible.
