Literacy
We are continuing to teach Unit 6 Weather
for All Seasons in our McGraw-Hill reading
series. All of our stories will include
elements of weather! (Lets hope for more
sunshine and less wind!)
Our next unit in the McGraw-Hill reading
curriculum has a focus on animals: baby
animals, pets, and animal habitats. Our
literature connections will include fiction and
non-fiction titles. One component of the
program that the children are loving is the
oral vocabulary. Each week the students
are introduced to 5 new words. We talk
about the meaning and how it is used in a
sentence. Ask your student what the new
oral vocab is for this week. You will be
amazed at the difficulty of the words. The
kids love to notice these big words when we
read books. Students will focus on the
letter names and letter sounds (in
beginning, medial and final position) and
handwriting strokes for the letters Uu, Ww,
Gg, Xx, and Vv. We will continue to work on
sight word vocabulary development adding
new words. (for, have, of, they, said, and
want) We will continue to work on grammar
skills. We are getting very good at plurals
and singular. We even know when to add
es or s to make it plural. We are learning
to find nouns, verbs and adjectives in a
sentence and how to substitute pronouns
for nouns! Are you impressed? These
students are doing fabulous! We recently
sent home the high frequency words
Math
We have started to work in Unit 4. In this
unit children will continue to practice
number partners up to addends of 10. We
will also focus on +1s in our adding. We
will introduce a fun, new math model for
number partners, the Math Mountain, which
is used through Grade 5 as a visual
representation for relating addition and
subtraction. Finding partners of numbers
continues to be a strong focus of childrens
work as they move toward the
understanding of writing equations for
addition and subtraction.
Integrated Studies
Miss Fayle and Miss Miles will explore
science concepts during the study of the
four seasons. Mrs. Sellenrick and Mrs.
Zetterman will be teaching Body Basics in
our health unit. During Social Studies time,
Mrs. Johnson and Mrs. Lindberg will focus
on modes of transportation and how goods
travel. We enjoy sharing classes and
getting to know all the kindergarten
students at Adams.

Library Time
Kindergarten students are doing a fabulous
job of learning the library procedures!
Thank you for helping your child return their
books on time. However do not feel
pressured to return a book everyday. Keep
the book long enough for your family to
read or even re-read and enjoy!
