Decisions need evidence

The late great Ronald Reagan was fond of saying, The
problem with our liberal friends is not that they are ignorant; its
that they know so much that isnt so.

Knowledge is usually defined as justified true belief. That if
something is not true you cannot call it knowledge is self-evident,
but it is also just as important not to hold beliefs for which you
have no evidence. If you cant justify it with facts, then youre
pretty much arguing with all the force of the world is flat because
everybody knows so.

For example, I personally have no knowledge of the people
calling for refugees to be blocked from our state. As such, I have not
engaged in personal attacks, character assassination, commentary
on their patriotism, or suggestions involving U-hauls. In the
absence of evidence, I will not make those judgments. I said
the anti-refugee position was hand-wringing garbage. I never
said anything about those who hold that position, because I do
not know all the people who hold that position. If theyre like
the majority of people I have met since moving here, they are the
friendly, hardworking, tax-paying, easy-going, salt of the earth.

But by the same token, I would bet my last dollar that not
one of those who hold that position knows all two million Syrian
refugees. For that matter, I would bet most of my dollars that they
dont know all 100 refugees being brought to Montana. When it
comes down to it, Id feel fairly confident betting that the majority
of them do not know any Syrian refugees.

In America, refugee is a legal status granted after a very
specific process is completed. A potential refugee must either
be a close relative of a US resident or be referred by the UN or
an NGO (usually a religious organization). They are sent to a
US Resettlement Support Center where they start the process,
which involves fingerprinting and other biometrics and multiple
background checks by the FBI, State Department, DHS, CIA,
DOD, DEA, Interpol, and about every other set of initials you
could possibly want. While the vetting process is completed,
refugees attend American culture orientation classes, interviews,
multiple medical checks, and other hoops all before being
allowed on US soil. Once here, their care is handed over to nongovernmental organizations such as Soft Landing, who arrange
housing, employment, and further American cultural orientation
and language classes.

If the people Soft Landing wish to bring into Missoula have
not completed those steps, then they are not refugees, they are
at best asylees (persons who seek permanent residence after
arrival on US soil) and at worst, illegal immigrants. If this is
indeed the case, the people protesting refugees need to change
their signs and petitions accordingly so as not to paint all of the
law-abiding refugees with the same brush.

Im sure the people who are protesting refugees are honest
persons of good faith. I have not attributed to them personally
dishonesty, cowardice, lack of patriotism, or even craven
indifference, nor do I intend to. I am simply pointing out their
lack of evidence to this point. I will not even deny they may have
such evidence, only that they have not presented it yet. I will
readily admit my fallibility. For instance, I quoted over seventy
thousand refugees admitted since 9/11. I missed a zero when I
read that report: its actually over seven hundred thousand.
If anyone would like to provide statistically significant
evidence of a trend toward criminal or terrorist behavior among
the refugees allowed into this country and demonstrate the legal
authority and physical capacity of the state of Montana to restrict
interstate movement and show that politicians are competent
to implement such a program, Im more than willing to listen.
I would point out that youre going to need 14.000 individually
documented cases to reach the 2% minimum typically held for
statistical significance. On further thought, I would also point out
that politicians are competent is an even tougher sell.

Still, I wont rule it out. Bring your evidence. Ill bring mine.
We can debate facts and figures and if the evidence is persuasive
enough, I might even put my name on the dotted line. Ill even
buy the food.

But if this is just going to devolve into a bunch of public
name-calling, count me out.

Not having it

I see Mr. Pedde wrote somewhat of a CYA letter.
He waxes all wonderful on immigrants, quoting
numerous statistics, studies, institutes ad infinitum.
I went through the immigrant thing before, so
Ill let that lie, but he gets into equating refugees
with immigrants who want to come here and be
Americans, and be part of our society, and its just
not the case. Take a look at Europe, or better yet, take
a look at Minnesota. They dont want to assimilate,
they want to impose their ways on us.......NO, Im not
having it.

You want to be an American? GREAT. I love my
Country, I served it Proudly. But if you come here
and want to have things the way they were over in
Sand City, think again.

If the Government has so much money to spend
that it thinks it can help out these poor refugees.........
spend it on our Veterans, our elderly who cant afford
their medication, and the list could go on. Its an old
saying, I didnt just make it up....... Charity begins at
Home.
