Scotty wrestlers headed to Poplar, hoping for fan support

The regular season of MHSA
wrestling is over, and now its go-time,
show-time in the post season.

Poplar will play host to the Eastern
B/C Divisional, and the Scotties will be
hitting the road early Saturday morning.
GHS Head Coach Jory Casterline
and his Scotty boys are hoping that a lot
of fans make the 67-mile drive to take in
the action. Matches start at 10:00 with the
finals slated to get underway at 4:30.

Weve had a great week of practice,

and our conditioning is fine, Coach

Casterline was pleased to report. Weve
just got to get deeper into our matches
where our conditioning can take over.
Were hoping to qualify as many
kids as we can, but its going to be a dog
fight for some of them to make it out of
divisional.

If you cant make it to Poplar you can
follow the progress on trackwrestling.
com, but it would be just as easy to travel
to Poplar!

Cardiac Ready Community is the goal

The Valley County Health Department would like
to invite you to participate in a worthwhile project
sponsored by DPHHS; EMS and Trauma section.
We would like to become a Cardiac Ready
Community. Currently in many Montana communities,
if a persons heart stops beating the likelihood of survival
is almost zero. Statistically, communities that have a
cardiac ready plan have seen a 20% improvement in
survival rates. We are interested in being one of those
communities!
Please join us Wednesday, February 17, 2016
from 1:00 - 2:00 pm at the Community Room of the
Courthouse.

On the following Wednesdays, we will have CSI

greatly enjoy the music and singing and the stories we
tell about the life and teachings of Jesus.
Please join us Wednesday nights throughout the
season of Lent as we follow Jesus to the cross. First
Lutheran is located at 641 2nd Ave. N., Glasgow. For

Letter to the Buzz

Moving on

Im old, and getting tired, and so this will be my last
foray into what has become an escalated exchange.

Mr. Pedde states is his letter in the 2/3/16 edition
of the Buzz that he hadnt attacked anyone. Actually,
that was the reason for my initial response. His derisive
comments about the guy on the front page of Fridays
edition.
Ive read it, re-read it, and read it again.......he
slammed a man I hold in high regard. That might be all
fine and good back east, but hoss, youre in Montana,
and when you slight a friend, you slight me, and I wont
take crap from some city slicker who wants to move in,
lock the gate, and then install all the things he thought
were good where he came from. Sounds a lot like the
refugee problem I have been describing.
I sometimes feel like the Borg (only Star Trek
TNG fans will get that) because the way I see it, you
want to live with us.....assimilate.

Its been fun, Im moving on. As Goldberg used to
say.............NEXT!!!

A Real Handful!

Sara (Fjeldheim) Wald wrote to Janelle (Shanks)

Bargmann for her 40th Birthday and also used it in the
two columns she regularly writes for (Lewistown and
Sidney newspapers).
Janelles mother, Janice Shanks, e-mailed family
and friends in the hopes that Janelle would hear from 40
family and friends, sending birthday wishes and jotting
down a favorite memory they had of Janelle.
Sara and Janelle were Glasgow Swim Team
teammates and she did one even better:
by Sara Beth Wald
The mother of a childhood friend recently asked
friends and family to mail her daughter a letter
describing their favorite memory of her, in honor of my
friends 40th birthday.

We havent seen much of each other over the years,
so it was fun to reminisce about our times together
growing up. This is the story I shared:

It always rained at the Malta swim meet. It was a
tradition.

Swimmers huddled shivering in their towels under
the tarps stretched over the heat benches, leaving their
sweats on until the last possible moment.

There was always that one bench everyone avoided,
second or third from the front. Sitting there was like
playing Russian roulette. Every time the tarp above it
collected too much water, it would sag and dump its
load on the heads of anyone sitting in that row.

And so it was a pleasant surprise the year I was
14, 15 maybe?... when the sun was shining. The tarps
provided welcome shade rather than shelter from the
rain. The only thing I was thinking about as I moved up
the heat benches was the frosted cinnamon roll I was
going to eat after the race.

The event must have been freestyle, because thats
the only event my friend Janelle and I both swam.

Nobody gave that dreaded bench a second thought
that year. A sliver of sunshine was the only thing coming
through the tarps.

Or was it?

The gap between the two tarps was a centimeter at
the most. I mean, what are the odds?...

Janelle and I were on the same relay team, and we
were a close-knit group. But on that sunny day in Malta,
I gave a whole new meaning to the phrase, I have your
back.

Fortunately, Janelle and I were both wearing rubber
swim caps. Janelle leaned forward to adjust her goggles.
She was an intense competitor, and had the medals to
prove it.
I, on the other hand, was not nearly so intense.
Winning was less a goal and more a pleasant possible
side-effect to getting a good tan.

And so while Janelle was nervously adjusting her
goggles, I yawned and stretched my arms wide.

I extended my fingertips to their full length, pointing
my palms skyward. And thats when it happened.
Plop.

At first I didnt get it. Was it raining after all? Janelle
had felt something drop on the back of her swim cap.
She wiped it with her hand and made a disgusted ugh
sound.

We looked at each others hands. She had a small
brown smear in her palm. I had a handful a handful
of bird poop.

We looked at each other, horrified. We looked up at
the tiny crack between the tarps. We looked back at our
hands. Then we started laughing hysterically.

The heat benches are usually a somewhat somber
place. No one else had seen what had happened. They
just thought Janelle and I had lost our minds.

OBITUARY

William Arvin

William F. Arvin, 89, of Havre, Montana, 18 days before
his 90th Birthday passed away in his home on January 30,
2016.

A graveside service will be on Saturday, February 6,
2016 at 1:00 p.m. at Lawndale Cemetery, near Opheim,
MT, with Pastor George Sturm officiating. Bell Mortuary
is in charge of Arrangements. Condolences may be left at
bellmortuarymontana.com.
Bill was born on February 17, 1926 to William Arvin, SR. and
Eva Ree (Sisson) Arvin, in Kansas City, Missouri, their oldest
child; later joined by one sister, Mary Ellen.

The family lived in Missouri until Bill was 9years old, then
they moved to Billings, Montana because of the depression.
His fathers brother had a dairy farm there. His father and
family worked there many years while the children were
growing up.
Bill graduated from Billings High School in 1944.
Following graduation he left for Farragut, with a group of
friends, for two years in the Navy during World War II. They
served in the South Pacific, the Philippians, Okinawa, and
Occupation of Japan, on the USS Colorado BB45.
Upon discharge he worked with harvest crews until
his friend, Ralph Queen, talked him into entering Eastern
Montana College until 1949; when he acquired a job in
Opheim, the beginning of a Career that lasted 37 years.

After two years in Opheim he and Beryl Omvig planned
to be married. However he had chosen an early release from
the Navy, in exchange for a chance that he might be recalled
to finish the last 10 months.

The wedding plans were made including the wedding
invitations which arrived just before the notice from Uncle
Sam that said: Report on May 29th with the wedding to be
June 3rd. Bill wrote for a 10 day extension. Being young and
being full of trust, and a lot of faith, the invitations were mailed
out! The government granted him 7 days so the wedding was
on June 3rd and he left for Korea very early on June 6th on the
USS Colonial LSD 18, mine sweeping off the Korean War.

Bill was discharged with the rank of Machinist Mate 3rd
Class. He was shipped back to the U.S. after three months,

where he was joined by Beryl in Coronado, California, back

and forth until March when his time was served. He had to
give up his teaching contract in Choteau to go to Korea, so
what does a teacher without a job do in March but go back to
college at Eastern Montana College; working in the summers
and securing a job in Saco, Montana. For three years, while
in Saco we adopted our first child, Lee. Next was a job in St.
Regis where he moved alone as Beryl waited for our second
son, William A. Arvin. Bill didnt care much for the mountains
so after two years we headed back to the prairie at Stanford,
Montana where our daughter DeJana Rea was born. After
four years in 1961 we moved to Havre where Bill finished his
teaching career. Bill worked summers in construction, SCS
(measuring land), county road and bridge crews; but every five
years was required to attend summer school.
When he retired in 1987, it took about a year of
retirement before he went and got a job at Cenex, where he
worked for 14 years.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents, William and
Eva Ree Arvin; and sister, Mary Ellen (Beldon, DeBord) Bustle.

He is survived by his wife, Beryl; sons, Lee B. of Great
Falls, and William A. of Havre; daughter, DeJana (Doug)
Bucher, of Post Falls, ID; grandchildren, James (Michelle)
Arvin of Cheney WA, Thomas (Jennifer) Bucher of Post Falls,
ID, Anita (Jeremiah) Johnson, of Glendive, MT, Lee Arvin
Jr. and Nathaniel Arvin of Great Falls; great-grandchildren,
Raistlin Aleman, Liriel, Selene, Nathaniel Jr., Alexander and
Sonata Arvin; sister-in-law, Mary Ann Onvig of Billings; and
numerous nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, please choose a charity of your choice
in Bills Honor.
