Instructional Strategies/Method of Delivery:
Students will meet in the Computer Lab, where they will be split into 2 groups. I will
instruct both groups separately.

Gathering Data for Persuasive Essays
Content Standard:
W.5.7 Conduct short research projects that use several sources to build knowledge
through investigation of different aspects of a topic.
ELD Standard:

Lesson Objective(s): Students will learn how to create a survey on Google Forms and will
know how to read the survey results.
Assessment:
Formative: Students will create a Google Form Survey that they may use for their
persuasive essays. Teachers will be walking around the room assisting students and
checking for knowledge by asking them to perform tasks, while teachers observe.
Summative: Students will email the link to their surveys to their classmates and students
will be encouraged to take one anothers surveys and I will take each survey as well. I
will be looking through the surveys to see that students have between 5 and 10 survey
questions and that they use at least 3 different questions types/styles (drop-down, multiple
choice, text box, paragraph box, etc.)

Lesson/Assessment Modifications:
All students should be able to create the form with assistance from the teachers. Teachers
will scaffold students who may need assistance in the computer lab. I will give direct
instruction at the beginning of the lesson and scaffold during the students independent
practice. Students who finish early will be encouraged to assist their classmates.

Great for persuasive essay (not to be used as a reliable source, but excellent for data
collection)
Students open up google classroom assignment with Ms. Maloneys form.
THROUGH
As a class, we will complete and view Ms. Maloneys form one question at a time.
Students submit their answers at the end of survey.
Show students how to view responses 2 ways
Guided practice: Show students how to begin their own google form
Sign into google
Find google forms
Create a name and topic for their form
Create different types of questions (discuss what form/question styles are best for types of
questions)
Change Theme
Formative Assessment: Have students raise their hands once they have created their first
question. Teacher will check to see if they are on the right track, ask them what their next
type of question will be and encourage them to proceed further.
BEYOND
Independent Practice: Students will complete the remainder of their survey. Survey
requirements:
Can be about anything, but it is recommended that it pertains to the students persuasive
essay.

Must have 5-10 survey questions. No more, no less.


Must have 3 different types/styles of questions: multiple choice, text, paragraph text, drop
down, etc
Summative Assessment: Students will email the link to their surveys to their classmates
and students are encouraged to take each others surveys (This could possibly be a
homework requirement/ daily 5 practice).
Note: For an additional summative assessment or another lesson, we could ask the
students to summarize their results next week and write a paragraph after analyzation.
The standard that would be met by doing this would be:
W.5.8 Recall relevant information from experiences or gather relevant information from
print and digital sources; summarize or paraphrase information in notes and finished
work, and provide a list of sources.
