Winthrop participates in Campus Sustainability Day
Office of Sustainability host themed costume contest
Winthrop University addresses the issue of sustainability. By participating in Campus
Sustainability Day, a national initiative.
The Office of Sustainability will host a costume contest, A Nightmare on Oakland, on Campus
Sustainability Day. Students, faculty, and staff will compete on who has the most sustainable
Halloween Costume. Costumes must only include recyclable materials. The competing
costumes included a fairy costume made out of newspaper, a hula dancer costume made out of
plastic, a cardboard robot made out of cardboard, and a scarecrow made out of a paper
bag.The Office of Sustainabilitys purpose is to improve the environmental well-being of the
campus. Through this program the office was able to educate students on the importance of
waste reduction, and how they can help with waste reduction.

Four contestants were competing as a newspaper fairy, a cardboard robot, a scarecrow, and a
hula hooper.
The program is in celebration of Campus Sustainability Day.

Creating a homemade costume will repurpose goods, divert pre-made costumes from landfills,
and promote education about recycling. Costumes will be one of a kind, and fear of seeing a
duplicate monster or ghoul will be unheard of, said on the Office of sustainability website.

The Office of Sustainability at Winthrop University works diligently on improving the


environmental well-being of the campus through economic vitality, ecological integrity, and
social equality.

prevalent.
Interest- It is a fun, interesting way to educate students and get them to participate.
Prominence- The issue of sustainability is important on a college campus.
Proximity- College campuses all over the world are bringing more awareness to the issue of

sustainability. Also it is in celebration of Campus Sustainability Day.


Unusualness- This is a unique initiative that encourages all college campuses to promote

sustainability on their campus.


Significance- Sustainability is an issue that is very important, and educating people on this issue
is important.
