Math 110 Financial and Workplace Math Course Information

Ms. Amy Merry (amy.merry@nbed.nb.ca)

Room 121
Hello, and Welcome to Financial and Workplace Mathematics 110

Textbook: Math at Work 11. Students are assigned numbered textbooks and are
responsible for returning the same textbook, in the same condition, at the end of the
course. If the student does not return the book at the end of the course, then the cost of
replacing the book must be paid to the school. Approximately $80. You will also be getting
handouts to work on instead of working out of the textbook.
If you choose to leave the textbook in the classroom then you should put it near Ms.
Merrys desk so no one else will take it. You will still need to make sure you use the same
textbook every time!
Units of Study:
Overview (Review)
Chapter 4: Interpreting Graphs
Chapter 5: Banking and Budgeting
Chapter 6: Slope
Chapter 7: Right Triangles and Trigonometry
Chapter 2: Drawing and Design

Materials:
binder/notebook/loose-leaf
ruler
graph paper
pencils/erasers
scientific calculator
Note: Pens should not to be used in math class.
Evaluation:
Each term, students marks are calculated using the following percentages:
Tests/Quizzes 45%
Worksheets 20%
Daily Quizzes 5%
Exam 30%
To be successful in this course, a student must achieve a final mark of 60%.
Almost everything you work on will be passed in for marks!
Daily Quizzes:
Daily Quizzes will be given at the end of some classes. Students may use their
notes to help them work out the question. These questions will reflect the types of
questions students can expect to see on their tests and will be similar to sample questions
given in their notes. The questions will be marked for the next day. If a student is not in
class for that day they will receive a mark of zero. The quizzes range in value of 3 to 10
marks.

Tests/Quizzes
Generally, students will be given approximately one weeks notice before a test.
Missed tests are to be written by the second day the student returns. Students are
responsible for arranging this with me. Missed tests can be written during class time (with
the teachers permission), at noon hour or after school. To be eligible to write a missed
test, the student must have a doctors or parents note with a legitimate reason for being
absent. An unexcused absence (jigging, for example), will result in a zero for that test.
Worksheets:
All work will be passed in for marks. If you miss a day then you are responsible for
catching up on what you missed (notes and work). If the work doesnt get passed the day it
is due then you can still pass it in before marks are due at the end of the semester. It is
your responsibility to keep track of what sheets you owe me for marks. At any point in the
semester I can tell you what you are missing. Marks are recorded as a zero until the sheet
has been passed in.
Absences:
Any student who is absent is required to bring in a note describing the reason for
their absence. It is the students responsibility to find out what work they missed.
Extra Help/Tutoring:
If working period is not ideal then lunch hour or after school should be considered.
Scheduled noon hour extra help will be provided on a need to use basis. I will not set
specific times for extra help but will be made available as long as I am given adequate
notice.
Anyone experiencing difficulty should make certain that they ask for help when they
first realize they are having trouble with the work. Generally, one topic will lead to another,
and a lack of understanding of the first topic will diminish the students ability to
understand the next topics. Students who wait until a day or two before a test to ask for
help will find they have little time to learn all of the topics they have missed. Also, due to
meetings and various other obligations, I cannot guarantee extra help to those students who
wait for the last minute.
Any student who fails a test, quiz, or assignment is strongly recommended to attend
tutoring. Topics that are tested throughout the semester will be on the exam as well.
Retests may be considered in some situations. However, there will be no retests granted
unless the student attends additional tutoring sessions. A list of tutors can be made
available upon request.
Thanks
