Tanners Point Community Response Plan

September 2015
Summary of key points for Tanners Point Residents

Introduction
This Plan has been developed by the Tanners Point Residents and
Ratepayers Association (TPPRA), in association with the Western Bay of
Plenty District Council, Civil Defence and the Katikati Community Board.
The full plan is available on the Western Bay of Plenty District Council
website. In the event of a disaster that risks or results in Tanners Point
becoming isolated, this plan outlines what is achievable within the
community and aims to sustain the local population until outside help
arrives.
Risks to the area
Events which could cause isolation include: earthquakes, slips (landslides),
tsunami, volcanic eruptions, cyclones and floods. Any of these events
could also cause loss of a potable (drinkable) water supply, electrical
mains supply and some telephone services including cell phone coverage.
Utility failures, etc, could also result in the requirement for the Community
Response Team (CRT) to assist or delegate assistance to vulnerable
community members.
Notifying and alerting the community of impending disasters
While it is the primary responsibility of local Civil Defence to advise the
community of any emergency event, the Tanners Point CRT will support
and assist Civil Defence with this activity, where required. When the CRT is
directed by Civil Defence of an impending disaster the notification will
comprise one or more members of the CRT driving around blasting their
car horn, and, if available, a siren will be sounded. Other communication
options that may be also be employed include: the use of telephone, text
messaging, urgent email, door to door knocking, or driving along the road
with a loud PA system.
Community Response Co-ordination Centre
The initial Primary Response Coordination Centre for any emergency is the
general area near the Moana Drive and Tanners Point road intersection. If
required, this Moana Drive intersection location will be moved to a
building such as the Red Barn located on a geographically high point.
Your Community Response Team (CRT)
The CRT is established by the Emergency Response Sub-committee of the
TPRRA committee and comprises TPRRA committee members and coopted members of the Community.

Given that it is not possible to know which team members will be in

residence when any emergency occurs, the team has opted not to
nominate team members to specific positions. Roles of Team Leader,
Resource Officer, Welfare Officer and Communications Officer(s) will be
allocated depending which members are on hand and who is available to
co-opt to help when an emergency occurs.
The Emergency Response sub-committee also has the responsibility for
annually reviewing the Community Response Plan and for keeping the
information on vulnerable members in the community and community
resources up to date. Please assist by completing the TPPRA annual
questionnaire as this is key to keeping this information up to date so we
are as prepared as possible should an emergency arise.

Water supplies may be interrupted or damaged during an emergency.
Alternatives that are available in the area include rain water storage
tanks, swimming pools, etc. NOTE: swimming pool water and ground
water from bores is required to be checked for quality before being used
for drinking purposes.
Addition of half a teaspoon per 10 litres of water of Budget Bleach
Regular, Budget Bleach Extra Strength or Clor-o-Gene Bleach will render
any water potable. NOTE: do not consume for at least 30 minutes after
bleach addition. Water purification tablets are another option.
