In this assignment, we are supposed to create a spiritual and psychological inventory that

can be used to determine a current state of wellness. Knowing a persons state of wellness is
important, because it can be a determining factor of how well their job will be done or how hard
the job could be affected. It is also important to create an inventory of questions, because it is
more than just being mentally prepared for a job. There are four components to a persons wellbeing, and those components are: mental well-being, physical well-being, emotional well-being,
and spiritual well-being. I think that knowing that a person has a good connection in all four
components of well-being is something that should be considered. What I have done is an
inventory of ten questions for interviewing a person to better understand their spiritual and
psychological self.
Question 1: Where do you see you self in the future?
Question 2: What are your long term and short term goals?
Question 3: What are some of the obstacles that you feel are keeping you from accomplishing
your goals?
Question 4: What is your connection to the world around you?
Question 5: What do you do to clear your mind when everything is running through your mind?
Question 6: Are you a spiritual person?
Question 7: Do you often meditate or pray?
Question 8: Would you ever be against participating in a form of meditation?
Question 9: Do you believe that everything happens for a reason?

Question 10: Do you feel that you are a good person?

I feel that these are all important questions that could be used to interview a person to
give them a better understanding of their spirituality and psychological self. These are questions
that I feel will really make a person think about who they are and what they are doing with their
lives. Maybe these questions would make a person realize if they are on the right track with how
they want their lives to be. Sometimes it takes an outside perspective to help us to understand if
we are on the right path and if we are truly one with ourselves, because sometimes we let
everything else just cloud over the importance of who we are and how we feel.
Spirituality is not necessarily a persons religion, but it is often seen as that. Spirituality
is actually a sense of connection to something bigger than ourselves, and it typically involves a
search for meaning in life (Krentzman, 2013). Spirituality can be a persons religion and their
connection with a church, temple, mosque, or synagogue, but it can also be a persons sense of
purpose, their personal definition of spirituality that may change throughout their lives, or
adapting to their own experiences and relationships (Krentzman, 2013). These are all forms of
spirituality, and all acceptable.
When considering a persons spirituality, you also have to take their emotional state into
consideration as well. There is a connection between the two, and they influence one another.
As stated before, spirituality is about seeking a meaningful connection with something bigger
than yourself. In doing so, you can find a result of positive emotions, peace, and acceptance
(Krentzman, 2013). All are things that will keep a person happy and feeling like they are on their
way to accomplishing their goals in life. Emotional health is all about cultivating a positive state

of mind. This can broaden a persons outlook and help them recognize and incorporate a
connection to something larger than them (Krentzman, 2013).
The person that I decided to interview with my questions is my coworker, Darius. He is
part of the Wellness department here at The Family YMCA, and a full time student as well. I
thought it would be interesting to ask someone outside of my family, because I could get
someones outlook that I am not really familiar with. Even though we work together, we do not
see each other on a daily basis. We also do not talk about our personal lives that much when we
are working. Following is the interview that I had with Darius.
A: Where do you see you self in the future?
D: I want to finish school. I plan on finishing out my Bachelors of Science in Kinesiology
degree with a minor in Exercise Science. I want to continue to work in the Health field. This is
something that I have a passion for. I want to be able to teach people. I want to help them
grow.
A: What are your long term and short term goals?
D: My short term goals are to finish school and become a personal trainer to make better
money. Then I want to go back to school to get another degree. My long term goal is to become
a Physical Education teacher. I want to be able to teach kids about being healthy and how to go
about it the right way.
A: What are some of the obstacles that you feel are keeping you from accomplishing your
goals?

D: Money always seems to be an obstacle from doing what we want to do. Even though I work
here, I want to be able to make more, support myself, and not rely on the help of my parents to
reach my goals. I also think that the load of stress that comes along with it can be an obstacle.
But I think that is more on me. I wait until the last minute for assignment and then rush to be
through with them. Hence the stress.
A: What is your connection to the world around you?
D: I feel that I have a good connection with the world around me here at work. It is more than
just coming in and doing a job. We make an impact on the members that come in here. Even if
it is just a smile and us asking them how their day is. What a lot of people dont realize is that a
lot of our older members live alone now and this is where they come to be around people. They
have come to a point where we make them feel like family. That is something that really makes
me feel like I am doing something right. It shows me that this is something that I am meant for.
A: What do you do to clear your mind when everything is running through your mind?
D: Honestly. The best thing for me when I am feeling super stressed out is to just pray. It
makes me feel better, and I know that I am being heard and helped.
A: Are you a spiritual person?
D: I would say that my religion is my spirituality. I know that not everyone else is the same
way, but my connection with God is how I know that I am a spiritual person.
A: Do you often meditate or pray?

D: I pray every day. Sometimes I pray multiple times a day, sometimes I only pray once a day.
I always make sure that I pray at least once a day though. I always want to thank God for letting
me live another day and learn something new.
A: Would you ever be against participating in a form of meditation?
D: No. I would never be against it. I have never tried it, but I have heard nothing but positive
things about it. I have friends who meditate and do yoga. They talk about how they feel a sense
of relaxation with it. That seems interesting to me.
A: Do you believe that everything happens for a reason?
D: I believe that God has a plan for all of us. So in a sense, I guess you would say that I
believe things happen for a reason. I know that we have free will, but at the same time I know
that God is always there to guide us down the right path.
A: Do you feel that you are a good person?
D: I would like to think that I am a good person. I know that we all make mistakes, but it is
learning from those mistakes and doing the right thing the next time that really matters.
From the interview, Darius seems like a very spiritual person. He is religious, but he is
not against trying other forms of spirituality. That is something that I found a little shocking,
because I am used to religious people being against other forms of spirituality. I am not saying
that there is anything wrong with that, but it is just the normal thing that I hear. I dont think that
there is much that I could do to help Darius with his spirituality and psychological self, because
he seems to have a pretty good idea of all that, which is amazing in someone his age.
