Arteriosclerosis
A general term describing a group of

cardiovascular disorders that have in common

i.

THICKENING of arterial walls

ii.

HARDENING of arterial walls

iii. LOSS OF ELASTICITY of arterial walls

3 Main Types
Atherosclerosis
o the most common form of arteriosclerosis
o occurs in large and medium-sized muscular

arteries
o formation of plaques / blood clots
Mnckeberg's medial calcific sclerosis
o caused by calcium deposits in the muscular
arteries
o occurs in major lower limb arteries
o of elderly people and diabetic patients
Arteriolosclerosis
o thickening of the walls of small arteries and
arterioles

Mnckeberg's medial
calcific sclerosis
a form of arteriosclerosis or vessel

hardening, where calcium deposits are found

in the muscular middle layer of the walls
ofarteries(the tunica media).
occurs as an age related degenerative
process
results from the deposition of calcium
phosphate crystals as a consequence of
disordered calcium phosphate regulation in
the blood vessel.

calcific sclerosis

Arteriolosclerosis
1) Hyaline arteriolosclerosis
) occurs in elderly but worse in those

with hypertension and diabetes

) thickening of the walls of artery and
arteriole by the homogeneous pink
hyaline material in tunica media

Hyaline Arteriolosclerosis

Arteriolosclerosis
2) Hyperplastic Arteriolosclerosis
involving a narrowed lumen
) commonly associated with malignant
hypertension
) onion-skin: thickened concentric smooth
muscle cell layer and duplicated basement
membrane
) most prominent(remarkable) in kidney
