Kingdom Fungi

Fungi Evolution
Characteristics
Fungal Structure
Reproductive Structures
Sexual/Asexual Reproduction
Major Groups of Fungi and Characteristics

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

College Students Learning Objectives

Identify basic structures of fungi

How does a pathogen cause fungal infection in
hosts
What antimicrobial agents are available and their
primary modes of action that are used in the
treatment of infectious disease

LEARNING OBJECTIVES

High School Students Learning Objectives

Classify Organisms from different kingdoms at several

taxonomic levels using a dichotomous key
Compare characteristics of the major kingdoms
Analyze differences in life cycles of selected organisms in
each of the kingdoms
Compare the structures, functions and cycles of viruses to
those of cells
Describe the role of viruses in causing disease and
conditions
Discuss mechanisms of disease transmission and processes
of infection

ACTIVITIES
Guess our Topic
Items and images related to Kingdom Fungi were passed
around the classroom and students were asked to guess the
topic/kingdom

ACTIVITY #1: GUESS OUR TOPIC

CLADOGRAM

Which of the
following is most
closely related to
a mushroom
(fungus)?

WHY?

Recent DNA-based
studies show that
fungi are more
similar to animals
than to plants

FUNGI EVOLUTION
common ancestor

Basidiomycota
(club fungi)
Ascomycota
(sac fungi)
Glomeromycota
(AM fungi)**

common
ancestor

Zygomycota
(zoospore fungi)
Chytridiomycota
(zoospore fungi)

**AM fungi were once considered part of Zygomycota,

but molecular data suggest they are a different phylum.

CHARACTERISTICS

Grow best in warm, moist

environments
Mycology is the study of
fungi
Mycologists study fungi
A fungicide is a chemical
used to kill fungi

Fungicide
kills leaf
fungus

11

THE CHARACTERISTICS OF FUNGI

Some are edible

Others are poisonous

EDIBLE

POISONOUS

12

CHARACTERISTICS

Some fungi are internal or

external parasites
A few fungi act like
predators & capture prey
like roundworms

Predaceous
Fungi feeding
on a
Nematode
(roundworm)
13

FUNGAL STRUCTURE HYPHAE

Thallus (body) consists of

vast network of threadlike hyphae which form
the mycelium

Septate fungi have hyphae

with crosswalls

Septa have pores for

movement of cytoplasm

Non-septate fungi are

multinucleated and hyphae
grow at their tips

Hard cell wall of chitin,

like insect exoskeletons
14

REPRODUCTION

Most fungi reproduce Asexually

and Sexually by spores
ASEXUAL reproduction is most
common method & produces
genetically identical organisms
Fungi reproduce SEXUALLY when
conditions are poor & nutrients
scarce
