TigressSydneyAcuteMcDanielwasborn,ToshaRenaeMcDougal,onDecember5,1976,inGreensboro,
NorthCarolina.Sheattendedaprivateschoolduringherearlyeducation,andwaslaterenrolledinErwin
ElementaryinGreensboro,NorthCarolinawhereshecontinuedtoadvanceoneyearaheadofstudentsher
age.SheparticipatedandexcelledinperformingartsproductionsatErwinElementary.Duringherpreteen
yearsandwhileattendingLincolnMiddleSchool,alsoinGreensboro,NorthCarolina,shesimultaneously
completedaprofessionalmodelingcertificateprogramatJohnCasablancaModelingSchool,followingin
thefootstepsofhermother,aprofessionalprintandrunwaymodel,breakingthebarriersagainstdarker
complexionedAfricanAmericanwomenduringthe1960s.McDanielparticipatedasaJuniorVarsity
CheerleaderatLincolnMiddle,playedcommunitysoftball,maintainedHonorRollstatus,whilecompleting
semiprofessionalmodelassignmentswithJCPenney,FourSeasonsTownCentre,andSteinMartProm
FashionShowandWinstonSalemAnnualBridalShowcircuitsformanyyearstofollow.Although
McDanielwasonthefasttracktowardablossomingcareerinthePerformingArtsandEntertainment
Industry,shewasmorecommonlyknowntostealawayindependentlyorleadtreksintotheexpansive
wildernessareassurroundingherneighborhood,thenaratherpopularmiddleclasslargeapartment
complex,knownaffectionatelyassimply"CreekBend"byGreensbororesidents.She'dspendendlesshours
collectingandclassifyingrocks,observingandsamplingtheponds,andwatchingtheactivityandmaking
petsofearthworms.Science,andMathematics,indeedprovedtobeherstrengths,advantage,andeven
greatestblessings.In1990,shestartedthefinalchapterofherprimaryeducationatthehistoric
predominantlyBlackhighschool,JamesBensonDudleyHighSchoollocatedacrossthestreetfromLincoln
Middle,andashort10minutewalkfromRossCourtneighborhood,wherehergrandmotherand
grandfatherraisedhermother,3auntsandtwinuncles.AtDudley,shecontinuedtoexcelacademically,
athletically,sociallyandgovernmentally.SheservedasParliamentarianforFutureBusinessLeadersof
America(FBLA),QueenandTreasurerofJuniorCivitans,activememberofFutureFarmersofAmerica
(FFA),VarsityCheerleader,receivedScholarAthleteasbothaveteranVarsityCheerleader,trackathlete
shortdistanceandDancecocaptainandacenterfieldsoftballplayer,apositionadmittedlygainedonly
becausethesoftballprogramwasnewanddesperatelyneededparticipants.Shestartedrightfield,and
earnedthecenterfieldpositionandawardforhernaturalathleticismandhardwork.Shewasalsoamongst
thefirstinducteesfortheinceptiveinstallationoftherenownDudleyLadiesMentorshipandScholarship
ProgramfoundedandestablishedbyJoeDudleyoftheDudleyProductshairandbeautycareempire.She
evenparticipatedinthehighlyacclaimedMs.DudleyPageant.Despitenotwinningorplacing,she
participatedinthatyear'scourtduringHomecomingin1994.Havingarelativelydisciplinarydriven
childhood,withafamilyfullofmilitaryincludingherfatherwhoservedintheArmy82ndAirborne
Division,selfdisciplinewasnotaforeignundertaking.UpongraduatingwithHighHonors,amongstthe
top10percentofherclass,shewasacceptedtotheUniversityofNorthCarolinaatChapelHilland
immediatelyenrolledintheFallsemesterof1994.ShehadalsobeenacceptedtoNorthCarolina
AgriculturalTechnicalStateUniversity,andafterplacingrunnerupinthe1994Ms.BlackGreensboro
Pageantwhichaffordedapartialscholarship,butonlyifusedatNorthCarolinaAgriculturalandTechnical
StateUniversity,anhighlyacclaimedHBCU.BecauseMcDanielhadattendedpredominantlyBlack
schoolsafterearlyprivateschooleducation,however,theneedtoprovetoherselfthatshecouldequally
excelataPWUwasthedrivingforcewhichultimatelyledtoherdecisiontoforfeitherpartialscholarship
toexperienceprestigiousUNC.SheunofficiallydeclaredEnvironmentalLawashermajor.Undertaking
generalcoreFreshmencourses,shealsocontinuedhermodelingandstudentbodygovernmentinterestsby
participatinginConceptModelingTroupeandasanactivememberoftheBlackStudentMovement

Withcheerleadinganddancenolongeronthetable,shestudiedJujitsuunderUNCfacultyinstead.Her
freshmanyearendedandshefeltnomoreaccomplishedhavingcompletedherfirstyearinheracademic
careerataPWUandbecauseshe'dalwayscloselywatchedthemoreaccreditedandunmatched
interdisciplinarySchoolofAgriculturedegreeprogramsatNCA&TSU,sheimmediatelypursuedtransfer
tosethersincerestacademicgoalsinmotion.Sheapplied,wasacceptedandaftertakingonesemesteroff
enrolledatA&TintheFallsemesterof1995.ShewentontocompleteherBSdegreeinAgricultural
EducationwithaconcentrationinEarthandEnvironmentalScienceinMayof1998.Duringher
baccalaureatepursuit,shecontinuedparticipationinstudentbodygovernmentandotherextracurricular
activities,includingFFA,ChoreographerandModelwithVergeModelingTroupeandParliamentarian,Co

eaterycounterinDowntownGreensboro,NorthCarolina.WithherBSdegree,shealsocompletedall
requirementstoearntheWasteManagementInstituteCertificate,achievingthesameamongsttheinceptive
installationofthisacademicallygroundbreakingcertificateprogramfoundedandguidedbyhermentor,
Dr.GodfreyUzochukwu.WithhersightssetfirmlyuponAgriculturalEconomicsandRuralDevelopment,
sheimmediatelymatriculatedintotheMaster'sprogramatA&T.Becauseshehadlongbeenenamoredby
ponds,rivers,andallecosystemsamidstandingwater,shepursuedwetlandbioremediationforherthesis
research.However,theonlysiteoncampuswithongoingwetlandstudieswastheSwineUnit.Andtheonly
waytogetherhands"wet"wastoalsoworkasageneralworkstudylaborer,havingnearlyexclusiveduties
managingandbreedingthehogsandpiglets.Whatwasaheadstronggirltodobutacceptthechallenge
headon.ThatworkassignmentforgedhermarkonAggiehistory,becomingthefirsteverfemaletoworkat
theSwineUnitinthatcapacity.Herrichathleticexperiencesoonprovedhertobeanythingbutjustanother
merepapergrading,dataenteringgradstudent,andinsteadsheexcelledatSwineHusbandry,includingbut
notlimitedtocastration,feeding,herding,teethclippingandeartagging.Shewasevenknowntokeepup
withtheguysandjointhemforaftershiftbarbecueatStamey'sRestaurantstilllocatedonHighPointRoad,

wetlandbioremediation,recyclingfacilitywasteintodrinkingwater,andswinehusbandry.Sheexcelledat

Neil,HorticultureExtensionAgent,oftheGuilfordCountyCooperativeExtensionService.Bythistime,
theAdvanceWasteManagementInstitutecertificateprogramwasfullyunderway,andshecompletedall
requirementstofurtherroundouthergraduatedegreetoearntheadvancedcertificate,againamongstthe
inceptiveinstallationforgraduatestudents.Beforecompletingherthesisrequirements,shewasinamajor
caraccidentandsufferedmultiplefracturestoherpelvis.Thediagnosiswasgrim.Doctorswarnedthatshe
wouldn'twalkagainbeforethenextyear.A&Tstoodsupportedlybehindher,literally,asshecrossedthe
stageinawheelchair,andpermittedparticipationinthegraduationceremonythatshewassettoattend
beforethecaraccident.WithaMaster'sEquivalentonlyandhavingalreadyreceivedacceptanceintothe
NorthCarolinaCentralUniversitySchoolofLaw,whichhadbeennamedthenumber1lawprogramfor

AfricanAmericanwomenthatyear(2002),McDanielforgedaheadpromisingherselfthatshe'dfinalizeher
MSwithoutunduedelayasshesimultaneouslycompletedherfirstyearlawschoolcourses.InJuly2002,
anotherunexpectedlifeeventoccurred.Herfatherwasfounddeadbehindabar,havinglostthebattlewith
alcoholismandepilepsy,whichiscausefortheinfamouslyricinherhighlyacclaimedpoetryfromher
videoalbum,"WalkingContradiction,"thefirsteveranthologyalbumproducedexclusivelybyan
independent,unsignedartist,onlyprecededbythelateKingofPop,MichaelJackson,andR&BVocalist
Phenom,Beyonce'Knowles,laterreferencedinthisbiography.Afterhonorabledischargefromthemilitary,
difficultysecuringapositionwithoneofthelocalcompaniesthatregularlyemployedandsupportedthe
viabilityandadvancementofveterans,heturnedtoalcoholforconsolationfromseeminglyworsening
economicfailure.Despitethedivorceofherparentsmanyyearsbefore,hermotherandfatherremained
closefriends,andMcDanielmaintainedacloserelationshipwithherfather.Hewaspartlyresponsiblefor
hernamechange,havingnicknamedher"Tigress"atanearlyage.Hewasadventartistduringhighschool
whereherparentsmet,andhisfavoritesubjectwas,ofcourse,thetiger.Hisdeathwascrushing,yetin
perfectmilitarybratandtypeApersonality,theproductofherparents,shechanneledallwouldbenegative
energytowardrehabilitationtowalkagainandcompletingherfirstyearoflawschool.Shewaswalking
within6months,wellaheadofscheduleslatedbyherdoctors.AsfarasCentrallawschool,however,the
schoolherfatherhelpedherdecideupon,shewasunimpressedbythelackofethicalrigor.Therewas
definitelynolackofacademicrigor,butshewasdefinitelyoustedastheblacksheepofthefreshmanclass.
Whatsealedher"fate"orwhatwouldlaterbemorerenownasherresolvetowardtheGreaterGoodwasa
remarkmadebyoneofherlawprofessorsaftersheansweredaquestionposedduringclass.McDaniel
answeredwithethicalinclination,andherprofessorscoldedher,demeaninglyassertingthat"therewasno
ethicsinthebodyoflaw."ThiscontinuedtoresonatewithMcDaniel,andshewithdrewbeforeeventhe
closeofthatfirstyear.Atthispoint,McDanielhadaBS,anMSEquivalentandoneyear'sworthoflaw
school.Itwasnowtheyearof2003,andshedecideditwastimetotakeabreakfromheracademiccareer.
SheworkedasaRangerwiththeNationalParkServicealongsideBorderPatrolattwosummerborder
parks.Havingalwayshadacommitmenttostartingafamilyofherown,shewasdissuadedfromthe
Rangercareerbecauseherdutiesweremorelawenforcementrelatedandbecausethesewereborderparks,
dangerwasdailyatissue.Shedesiredstillyetahiatusfromtherigorthatshe'dsobecomeaccustomed.It
wastimetopursueherentrepreneurialaspirationsthatshehadpreviouslypostponeduntilfinishinglaw
school.Havingalwaysaloveforanythingandeverythingculinaryandanopportunitypresenteditself,she
openedarestaurantinLouisville,Kentuckywithalongtimefamilyfriend,whowasarenownsocialitein
the"Luh"villecircuit.Itwasquicklysuccessfuluntilburstpipesstemmingfromslumlordpracticesmade
herdebutentrepreneurialendeavorcometoascreechinghalt.ButMcDanielwasnolessenamoredwiththe
entrepreneurialspirit,andstartedherveryownModelingandPerformingArtsTrainingFirm,
Choreographic,whichwasrathersuccessful.Becauseacademiaisherfirstlove,sheappliedandwas
acceptedwithoutconditiononthebasisofhercolorfulprofessionalexperienceasamodelandperforming
artisttothehighlyaccredited,worldrenownUniversityofLouisvilleMasterofFineArtsdegreeprogram,
wheresheexcelledwithTheatreActingasheracademictrack.Shelandedinnumerableleadingrolesin
Universityproductions,andwowedaudiencesoffellowstudents,facultyandotherUniversityofficials,and
communityresidents.Herschedulewasfull,runningChoreographicwithawaitinglistofaspiringchild
starsandcompletingherMFAstudies.Aftercompletingthefirstyearduring

ModelingSchooltoserveasanindependentinstructorandCommunityEventsLiaison.Atthispointinher
