Discuss: Why is
mitosis important?
When do you think it
is used e.g. growth

Activate
We are going to watch a short video on mitosis.
When watching, answer the 4Q on your sheet
Self-assess
1. What happens before a cell divides? It makes a
copy of every chromosomes DNA
2. What happens to the nuclear membrane? It
dissolves
3. What happens to the chromosomes? They line up
in the centre of the cell. They then separate to
opposite sides of the cell. New nuclear
membranes form and the cell begins to divide.
4. What is special about the two cells produced?
They are genetically identical (and so can replace
others that have died)
Demonstrate
You are going to work in small teams and make a
3D timeline on the stages of mitosis
Resources: pipe cleaners, A3 paper, diagrams,
card sort with jumbled up stages, extension Q,
Each group needs:
1. A timekeeper (who needs to collect the pack at
the front)
2. A traffic light co-ordinator (R/Y/G)
3. A teacher link (can ask me 1Q)
Extend yourself: what could happen if mitosis
goes wrong?

cells divide by
mitosis

cells form with

chromosomes to
