Mitosis
LO Define mitosis and describe what a stem cell is

PEER assess

1, 3, 5, 6 = SEXUAL
2, 4 = ASEXUAL

1. Must produce and use gametes SEXUAL

2. The genetic information of the offspring is
identical to the parent ASEXUAL
3. Produces natural variation SEXUAL
4. Passes on all genetic problems of the mother
ASEXUAL
5. 2 parents are required SEXUAL
6. Allows mutation to occur that powers natural
selection SEXUAL

Mitosis is a nuclear division giving

rise to genetically identical cells

Discuss: Why is
mitosis important?
When do you think it
is used e.g. growth

Mitosis is a nuclear division giving rise to

genetically identical cells.
Mitosis is important for;
Growth
Repair of damaged tissues,
Replacement of cells
Asexual reproduction

Activate
We are going to watch a short video on mitosis.
When watching, answer the 4Q on your sheet

1. What happens before a cell divides?

2. What happens to the nuclear membrane?
3. What happens to the chromosomes?
4. What is special about the two cells produced?

Self-assess
1. What happens before a cell divides? It makes a
copy of every chromosomes DNA
2. What happens to the nuclear membrane? It
dissolves
3. What happens to the chromosomes? They line up
in the centre of the cell. They then separate to
opposite sides of the cell. New nuclear
membranes form and the cell begins to divide.
4. What is special about the two cells produced?
They are genetically identical (and so can replace
others that have died)

Demonstrate
You are going to work in small teams and make a
3D timeline on the stages of mitosis
Resources: pipe cleaners, A3 paper, diagrams,
card sort with jumbled up stages, extension Q,
Each group needs:
1. A timekeeper (who needs to collect the pack at
the front)
2. A traffic light co-ordinator (R/Y/G)
3. A teacher link (can ask me 1Q)
Extend yourself: what could happen if mitosis
goes wrong?

Model

2. Chromosomes

copies of
themselves
3. They line up

6. Two daughter
cells form with
identical
chromosomes to
the parent cell

divide by mitosis to produce daughter
cells that can become specialised for
specific functions
