Active Premier Award (Newman):

Suzy Oldham
Suzy has an immense capacity to engage
and encourage the youth and children of
Newman. For many years through Scouts
and Girl Guides, Suzy has inspired many
of her charges to better things by actively
participating in community activities. She
has served the youth of her community
by driving the Scouts and Guides groups
to events and activities and is an active
volunteer at the YMCA, helping to keep
children active in Newman.
Community Group Award:
The Newman Club
The Newman Club has long since provided
Newman with hospitality and home for
the Newman Bowls Club, mens and ladies
darts, and squash but has struggled to stay
afloat over the past few years. Due to the
dedication of several selfless volunteers,
The Newman Club has survived for the
benefit of the Newman community. The
Club also came to aid of the Shire of East
Pilbara when they allowed the 2016 Artist
in Residence to use the squash courts as a
makeshift artist studio when the original
premises were unavailable for use. With
the support of the community and active
volunteers, the Newman Club has been
revived and still serves as a wonderful
meeting place for the residents of Newman.

Small Business Grants

BHP Billiton Iron Ore recently partnered

with the Western Australian Department
of Commerce to improve the capacity and
competitiveness of small and medium
sized businesses in Hedland and Newman,
through the Industry Facilitation and
Support Programme (IFSP). Eligible
businesses in Port Hedland, South
Hedland and Newman received grants
of up to $20,000 for activities including
occupational health, safety and quality
systems, equipment purchases and upskilling employees. A total of 14 businesses
have benefitted from this programme.

Apprentices, Trainees and Residents

Since 1974, BHP Billiton Iron Ore have

been inviting local residents to apply for
various positions in the residentially based
Apprentice and Traineeship programme.
The 2015 intake saw 25 trainees and
apprentices commence in their roles with
an additional 21 apprentices and trainees
being welcomed in 2016. It was also the
first time residentially based traineeships in
the mining production team were offered.
More than 100 people from Newman have
now been involved in an apprenticeship or
traineeship with BHPBIO in the past two
years alone, gaining invaluable experience
in the mining industry and giving them a
kick start to their career.
The Eastern Ridge operations were also
approached with regards to transitioning
to a residential employment arrangement.
150 employees were surveyed to determine
their interest in relocating to Newman.
Around 15 employees have shown interest
in considering re-location, and five are
relocating to Newman in the first quarter
of 2016.

BHP on FaceBook

BHP Billiton Iron Ore Western Australia has

launched their official Facebook page. They
are excited to join Facebook and share
information with their employees, host
communities, partners and the wider WA
community.

Companion Cards
The Shire of East Pilbara has introduced the
Companion Card ensuring that people with
disability in the East Pilbara have the same
opportunities to access Shire services and
events as others.
The Companion Card is issued to people
with a significant and permanent disability
who require attendant care support from
a companion. With this card, companions
in the East Pilbara will now be granted free
admission to Shire venues as attendant care
support. This includes the Newman Aquatic
Centre and the Newman Recreation Centre.
This is a very positive decision by Council
as not only is it fair for the companions
of people with disability but it also helps
ensure that the Shire of East Pilbara venues
comply with existing anti-discrimination
legislation, said Shire President Lynne
Craigie.
The Companion Card program has been
running in WA since 2006. The Companion
Card is issued to people with a significant
and permanent disability who require
attendant care support from a companion
to participate at most venues and activities.
For more information about the
Companion Card please contact the
Manager Recreation and Events Simmone
Van Buerle at the Shire on 9175 8000 or

6NEW - Newmans Community Radio 92.9

On Your Bike

An article in the NW Telegraph suggesting

that 6NEW community radio station was
under threat due to a dearth of volunteers
raised a rallying call. A meeting was held
and a date set for its Special General
Meeting on Tuesday 22 March aiming to
reinvigorate what has, for decades, been a
mainstay in town.

morning from 2001 to 2014. He still holds

books containing every request ever made
and the dedication accompanying it that he
then went on to play from tape cassettes.

For 30 years, WA has celebrated Bike Week

to promote cycling for fun, competition
and transport, and to raise awareness of
bike safety.

The station has also gone mobile offering

a lively perspective on location from a
caravan built specially for the purpose
during previous Fortescue Festivals,
football and speedboat competitions, and
Retravisions birthday.

This year, the Shire of East Pilbara will

launch their new recreation map, a pocket
sized map highlighting Newmans shared
use walk/bike paths.

By Sonya Matheson

6NEW first went on air in March 1979 from

premises on Keedi Road as the first FM
radio in WA outside Perth and the only
FM one on air 24-7. In its first few hours,
there were 140 calls for song requests or
congratulations. Twenty-six residents were
trained as announcers and a couple of
people dedicated time for administration
work. Leaders in its development included
Ron Armstrong and Mike Turner.
6NEW first broadcast from its present
building next to the aquatic centre in
September 2009 thanks to much generosity
of individuals and organisations including
Mt Newman Mining, G&S Transport,
Wideglide, Cape Range Electrical, Freo
Cranes and more.
Craig Hoyer presents a Saturday morning
football show including local junior and
senior results along with other sports
between 10 am and 12 noon. He has been
doing this for over 14 years and still does.
Tune in to 92.9 FM.
Kiwi Bob Nicholson hosted an all night
request programme every Saturday
between 7 pm and 6 am the following

On-going support from the Shire of East

Pilbara, BHP Billiton Iron Ore, the stations
sponsor Capricorn Bar and Grill, and
advertisers make it financially possible for
the station to stay on air.
The rallying call has inspired long term
and new community residents to get
involved including Tania Paranihi who was
previously a volunteer, when a resident,
and has returned to Newman years later as
a FIFO worker.
As with so many organisations in town,
6NEW would not be possible without
dedicated volunteers and those on active
committees. Brett Kelly has given so much
time and energy to the station and would
appreciate support.
newmancommunityradioinc@westnet.
com.au
If you are able to help 6NEW, consider
attending their Special General Meeting at
the Newman Visitor Centre at 6:30 pm on
Tuesday 22 March.

They will be partnering with the

Department of Transport and WestCycle
for a community bike ride and sessions on
bike handling.
On Saturday 12 March, join in the
community bike ride at 7 am departing
from the rec. centre; open to all ages
and abilities. Stay to share the free
healthy breakfast at 8 am at the Newman
Recreation Centre.
For those adults who have not been on a
bike for a while, or are new riders, a Rusty
Riders workshop will follow the breakfast
at 9 am. Learn how to check your bike and
helmet, undertake simple maintenance,
and improve your bike riding skills.
Also on Saturday 12 March at 5 pm, the
Shire offers a two-hour workshop for
children over 8 years run by an accredited
cycle coach from WestCycle covering road
awareness, bike handling skills and safety
checks. A second session will be held
on Sunday 13 March at 8 am. As places
are limited, please book at the Newman
Recreation Centre on 9177 8075 or mrs@
eastpilbara.wa.gov.au. These will be held at
the netball courts.
Remember your helmet.

Police eWatch

Part extract from Januarys report: Senior Sergeant Larry Miller Officer-in-Charge Newman Police

The community of Newman continues to

realise reductions in reported crime. Last
year I touched on this during the radio
segments, but it is important to say it
again. As a community you care and the
information and assistance you provide to
us is one of the main reasons we are so
successful in reducing crime and making
this community a safer place.
As of this week [27 January 2016] we are
sitting at 10% less crime than the same time
last year and when you consider we are
coming of the back of a 24% reduction from
the year before this is a great achievement.
Burglaries are an issue for us so far this
year, so please be vigilant in locking up
your homes and keeping an eye on your
neighbours.
We have achieved some great results in
reducing the incidents of assaults within
our community by a massive 66%, with
much of this attributed to the great work of
our Liquor Accord involving our licensees
and police.
Theft is once again an issue for us, we have
managed reductions however there is a sad
reality that we must secure property at all
times, even within our own yards and the
days of leaving your vehicles unlocked have
long gone. I encourage everyone to think
security and lock things up or store them
out of view.
Of the 12 stealing offences so far in
January, 3 have occurred at remote mine
sites and we have charged 7 persons for
the remaining 9 within the town site, so
some great work being done by your police
officers as we continue with the pressure.
One of the biggest challenges we faced in
2015 was the behaviour of some of our
community members within the CBD. In
partnership with the Shire we implemented
signage at a number of the parks around the
CBD. This signage outlines the conditions
you must abide by when utilising these
areas.
Police and your Shire Rangers have been
conducting combined patrols of the area
and we were able to substantially reduce
the incidents of anti-social behaviour in
these areas as we closed out 2015.
We did experience an increase for a few
weeks in early January, however with the
assistance of some respected community
members, the Shire, constant policing and

a public forum I addressed personally, we

have been able to bring this back under
control with business around these parks
and general recreation going back to a
quiet enjoyment of the area.
The shopping centre has become an area
of focus, due mainly to a demographic of
youth who see the centre as somewhere to
congregate and play.
I continue to work with business owners,
centre management and the Shire on
these issues and my officers are a constant
presence in and around this area when
tasking permits. We cannot be everywhere
and we have an entire sub district to police,
which takes us up to Auski and down
to Kumarina, so a fair bit of ground to
control. But rest assured if you call us, we
move mountains to respond and on most
occasions we are there very quickly.
A quick overview of what your Police have
dealt with since 01/12/2015 [this report
was dated 27 January 2016]
835 Separate Incidents attended.
Arrests 40 - Summons 66 - Charges 143
Incudes:12 persons charged for Burglary,
9 for Drug related offences, 9 for Assault
related offences, 11 for Stealing and 9 for
Drink Driving offences.
We have issued 86 traffic infringements
notices many for speeding in the 40 km
zones. We continue to work hard to keep
this community safe and appreciate the
fact that you work with us.
Traffic: As stated last year we receive
a lot of complaints about unlicensed
motor bikes tearing around the streets.
I know many of you witness these young
community members riding erratically
down our streets having no regard for our
children or their own safety. I am sure you
can appreciate this is not easy to police, so
I ask that if you know the house they are
coming from let us know and we will deal
with it.

going to work when you are, so why not

reverse in when you get home and drive
out without noise in the morning.
And finally on vehicles, the horn on your car
is not there to beep at your friends when
you leave their house in the early hours
of the morning. The horn is an emergency
warning device and it is an offence to use
it for any other purpose. It has become a
common practice to give it a blast as you
drive away from a friends house and no
one really cares as long as it isnt in the
early hours and you don't wake up the
neighbourhood.
All of these things are simple, just be
neighbourly

Green Waste

By the Shire of East Pilbara

PRC (Pilbara Regional Council) coordinated

the tender process for the four member
Councils
(Karratha,
Port
Hedland,
Ashburton and East Pilbara (Newman) to
mulch each Councils green waste stored at
their relevant landfill sites.
The mulcher will visit each site to carry
out the mulching to produce the size and
grade requested by that member Council
and they will be charged based on the
quantity that is processed. The contractor
will invoice the PRC who will then invoice
each Council to recover the cost.
At this stage, the PRC is finalising the
contract with the successful tenderer and
if all goes to plan they will be scheduled
to visit Newman in early April 2016. The
Shire expects to create about 2,500 m3 of
50 mm dia. processed mulch which will be
used on various Shire parks and gardens in
Newman. No assessment has been made
at this stage if it will be available to others.

While on motor bikes we also get

complaints about the loudness of some
of the Harley style bikes getting around
particularly those that head to work at
5am, again lets us know where they come
from and we will inspect them and ensure
they are legal.

Green waste segregation occurs at the

Newman landfill site where a specific
location is signposted and customers are
directed to dump at this location. Therefore
it is mainly self-regulated and to date any
contamination by other products is minor
and within tolerances.

Reverse warning horns also causes a

number of complaints. If this is you, how
about you consider that not everyone is

The project meets several objectives of

the state Waste Strategy and the Shires
Strategic Community Plan.

Anxiety in Your Pets

By Dr Lucy van der Weide, BSc BVMS

Veterinarian, Newman Veterinary Hospital

During March, across Australia veterinary

practices celebrate Polite Pet Month, an
initiative aimed at raising awareness of
mental health issues in our pets, such as
anxiety disorders and phobias.
Just like people, many pets experience
anxiety. In fact anxiety can be a real
problem in our pets. In certain situations
this response is very useful, for example
if there is genuinely something to be
fearful of. Sometimes pets experience
anxiety to specific stimuli, for example;
thunderstorms, strangers or loud noises,
this is often referred to as a phobia.
However, in some pets, the anxiety is
more generalised and chronic, and this
ultimately can affect their everyday life and
their relationship with their owners.
Signs a dog (or cat) may be feeling anxious
include yawning, scratching or sniffing,
avoiding eye contact, refusing to eat,
panting, pulling the corners of the mouth
back, salivating, pulling ears back, moving
in a crouched position and standing with
the tail pulled under.

Fear and anxiety in dogs and cats can easily

lead to aggression. Anxious dogs and cats
are more likely to bite, so recognising
body language that displays early warning
signs of anxiety is important. Even the
friendliest pet can react if he/she feels
scared or threatened. The safest practice is
to never leave children under the age of 10
unsupervised with any dog, including the
family pet.
Fortunately, anxiety in our pets is a
treatable condition. Over the past decade,
there have been lots of advances in
the science of anxiety and behavioural
disorders in our pets. Pets who suffer from
generalised anxiety will hugely benefit from
a combination of behavioural modification
and in certain cases behavioural
medications. Behavioural medication alone
is normally ineffective in resolving anxiety
and behavioural problems.
Better yet, focus on preventing behavioural
problems. It is far better to prevent a
behaviour problem than to deal with them
later on, so starting off on the right foot
with your puppy is paramount. The best
way to prevent dog bites is to ensure your
dog is well socialised and trained from
puppyhood onwards. Proper socialisation
means providing your puppy with positive
experiences with new things including
new people, other animals, new places
or situations. If your puppy or kitten isnt

having a great time, you could actually be

inflicting more harm than good.
A quote that rings true to me, If we
can teach a killer whale to pee in a
cup, you can train your dog without
the use of punishment - Ted Tuner,
SeaWorld. Reward based training, positive
reinforcement, is a scientifically proven
method of teaching your cat and dog.
It is a safer, much more effective, and
humane way to teach animals by using
high value food treats, attention and or
toys, essentially anything your pet likes
to reinforce or encourage that particular
behaviour. Be careful not to reinforce bad
behaviours. This is a common mistake
that owners make without realising it (for
example yelling at your dog). Punishment
and negative reinforcement can potentially
have negative impacts on your pet such as
aggression, learned helplessness, and even
fear and anxiety.
When starting out, especially when
working on newly-learned behaviour, do
your training in areas free of distractions
until your dog is really confident with
the command. Pay close attention to
consistency, repetition and timing. Your pet
can make better choices if you make better
choices. Be patient and enjoy learning with
your pet.

Smarter Than Smoking 2016 Newman Echo Park Memorial

Information extracted from Motorcycling WAs website (16 February 2016)

The Newman Motorcycle Club Memorial

Event has attracted local, regional and
metropolitan riders for 9 years running
and with this being the 10th Newman Echo
Park Memorial weekend on 5-6 March
it is sure to be a huge weekend! There is
an enormous $10,000 in cash and prizes
available with thanks to all sponsors, in
particular Healthway, Schlam Engineering
and Coates Hire.
The memorial event is in honour of two
valued members of the club, Michelle
Russell and Luke Miles-Woodland
(otherwise known as Little Woody), who
tragically lost their lives in 2004.
Michelle was a club member for about 20
years, President in 2003 and put a huge
amount of time and effort into keeping the
club going, and making it what it is today.
Little Woody was the first quad rider to
race the track and it was from here quad
racing started at the Newman Motorcycle
Club. He was also the Northwest Champion
in 2004.

Other club members who have lost their

lives or lifestyles while being members of
the club are also remembered especially
over this weekend.
The Newman Motorcycle Club was
incorporated back in 1984 with a track that
caters for all skill levels.
The Newman Motorcycle Club was
incorporated back in 1984, the club started
out north of the town and ran successfully
there for a number of years, it was a track
made on natural terrain which formed
jumps and drop offs and dodged trees,
the track was always under threat of
floods, states the February 2016 article on
Motorcycling WAs website.
Facilities were created just near the LIA in
the late 1980s and became known as Echo
Park.
The track is a hard packed one, set into
a side of a hill consisting of many jumps,
berms; there is also a bridge which has
been constructed from 2 mining haul-pack

truck trays which were sponsored by BHP

when the track was first constructed.
Juniors will compete on Saturday 5th March
and Seniors on 6th March, racing starts at
3.30pm until late, with the memorial laps
taking place as the sun sets each evening.
Canteen and bar facilities will be available
on both days with camping available at
the track. A recent addition to the facilities
includes hot showers.

other club activities, please contact Club
President, Johnno, on 0423 528 124 or
