II. Organizational Context


The Interpret/Translate Associate works under direct supervision of the Head of Public
Information Unit (PIU), providing necessary interpretation/translation support to the OCHA
Regional Office for the Middle East and North Africa (ROMENA). The National
Interpret/Translate Associate will perform assigned translation tasks from English to Arabic and
vice versa, in a timely, accurate and consistent manner. S/he will also be required to perform
quality control and proof reading of translated documents and ensure appropriate prioritization
of workload. S/he will also provide simultaneous translations during meetings, training
programs and workshops as required.

III. Functions / Key Results Expected


Summary of Key Functions:

Provides written translation from English into Arabic and vice versa of official documents,
including laws, regulations, MoUs, agreements, procedures, public information material,
official letters, electronic web site content, social media postings, etc.
Initiates translation of new documents into English or Arabic as relevant
Incorporates revisions into existing documents in English or Arabic
Proof reads documents as necessary and as required
Ensures correct and consistent United Nations humanitarian terminology is used
throughout documents.

Performs quality control of translated documents to ensure accuracy, quality and


appropriateness of the translation.

Takes minutes of meetings in English or Arabic and produces minutes of meetings in


both Arabic and English for use of the management/unit.

Provides occasional backstopping support for formatting and graphic design of Arabic
language materials.

Undertakes any other duties as necessary and required.

Language Requirements:

Secondary education. University degree in English language


literature and/or translation/interpretation from a recognized
institution is desirable.
7 years of functionally-related professional experience is
required. A combination of a relevant university degree with
reduced years of functionally-related professional experience
could be also accepted. Experience of working for an
international organization is essential, preferably in a UN
agency. Proven experience in the usage of computers and
Microsoft Office software packages is required (MS Word,
Excel, etc). Experience in the usage of graphic and layout
software is an asset (Adobe Illustrator, InDesign, etc).
Fluency in English and Arabic
