HOUSE MUSIC SOCIAL

GROUP

SOCIAL GROUP

A social group is a particular group of people that share

similar characteristics for example age, gender, race. My
house music magazine is representing those within the ages
of 18 35 that generally enjoy going to clubs which play
electronic dance music (house). House music derived from
disco, however the mood, compared to disco, is typically a
bit darker and simple as house music uses many other
sounds including synths, funk, and soul.
To show that I am representing an individual social group, I
had to take into consideration my model, my magazine
photography, the outfit of my model, and a couple other
factors. All this had to be taken into consideration in order
to please and convince them to buy the magazine.

REPRESENTING GENDER

The choice of model is the most important when trying to

represent a particular social group because it stands out
the most and makes the audience question if the magazine
is right for them. For example if a 19 year old student saw
the image of an 80 year old pensioner on the front cover,
she wouldnt be drawn to it. For my front cover, my model
was a light skin 18 year old boy. As it is known that house
is a youth dominated genre, my choice of model
represents house perfectly. The model may appeal to
females because they may find him attractive. A cover line
on my front page introduces the article about a young
male being a crash course in DJ superstardom. This
represents males between the age of 17 to 21, as DJing
tends to be a masculine activity.

REPRESENTING AGE

My product is being aimed at youths aged 17-26 and

therefore I had to include features that represented that age
group. Artists such as Disclosure are young and would be
able to relate, or Jess Glynne interview, which will interest
those that have been keeping up to date with the music that
she has produced.
I decided to write my article in more of an informal way as
youths age 17 21 tend to relate to that sort of text. For
example, in a cover line I used the word partay instead of
party, as this is the way that youths tend to pronounce it.

REPRESENTING CLASS

We where provided with a variety of materials and

clothing. I chose the artist for my front cover to wear blue
because it portrays him as a middle classed artist. The
choice of outfit was most important in the front cover
because it is amongst the factors that make the audience
question if this magazine is for them. Whilst considering
the colours that I wanted to use I also had to consider the
type of clothing he would wear.
As regards to my contents page, I gave my model an all
black theme because it looked casual as well as cultured.
Both my models are dressed to represent a mixture of
working class and middle class
