WHAT'S ISM AND ITS

REQUIREMENTS
ISM stands for Independent Study Mentorship. Its a program designed for students with
interests at the professional level product to explore any field, working with professionals
as adult mentors, and present the end product.
Requirements include
To complete an in-depth mentorship study in the area of interest
Document a minimum of 2-3 hours of mentorship activities each week
Complete a journal entry each week documenting your mentorship experience
Complete an ISM Professional Portfolio showcasing all assignments completed during the
course and the final project

MY PROJECT TOPIC
My project topic is about The Special Cares of The NICU. Where
babies are put under isolette care when their born premature, very
sick and possibly with different diseases . I choose this project
topic because I truly enjoy and love working with babies and
being able to have a hands on learning experience in the
profession I'm interested in perusing.

MY PRODUCT
My product will be creating a model of an isolette where I
will also display my own case with my own baby. Explaining
the functions of the isolette and how it benefits the baby.

KEY POINTS
Why are babies put under isolette cares?
What are the functions of the isolette?
What are the procedures of recovery for the babies ones their
in the isolette?
Is it benefitual for the babies to have their parents come and
visit them in the isolette?

WHY ARE BABIES PUT

UNDER ISOLETTE CARES?
Babies suffering from lugs, brain, gastrointestinal, heart
and eyes problems are put under isolette care
immediately after being born. Theses babies normally
tend to be born premature.

BREATHING PROBLEMS
Premature babies suffer from breathing problems, since their lungs
are not fully develop as a full term babies lungs would. The two
most common breathing problems are Respiratory distress
syndrome (RDS) and Apnea, bradycardia, and desaturation.
Respiratory distress syndrome which is caused by their inability to
produce surfactant. Which is a fatty substance that coats the tiny
sacs in the lungs that keeps them form collapsing. Cause by
infection, breathing meconium and fluids entering the lungs.
Apnea, bradycardia and desaturation: is when a baby stops
breathing for a short period of time, which is known as apnea.
Apnea also causes slower than normal heart rate and can also
indicate low level of oxygen in the blood.

WHAT ARE THE FUNCTIONS

OF THE ISOLETTE?
The main function of the isolette is to simulate the conditions that
the baby would be under if it was to still be in the womb. It
regulates the tempter that the baby would be under as well as
protect the baby from any harmful bacteria or virus.

WHAT ARE THE PROCEDURES OF RECOVERY

FOR THE BABIES ONES THEIR IN THE
ISOLETTE?
The procedures of recovery for a baby depends in the conditions
and its health. If the baby is just in the isolette to gain weight or to
grow a little they will only be there for a short period of time to
monitor their feeding and growing. However if a baby was born
premature at 27 weeks with health problems the recovery process
would be longer and more complicated. Since the baby could have
breathing, heart, and brain problems. Each baby health and needs
are unique from one another.

IS IT BENEFITUAL FOR THE BABIES TO HAVE THEIR PARENTS

COME AND VISIT THEM IN THE ISOLETTE ?
It is definitely a benefit for a baby to be visited by its parents. The
technique call body to body which is the direct body contact
between a baby and mom or dad. The way it works is one the
parent puts the baby on their chest so the baby can receive the
body heat that the parent releases. Helping the baby maintain the
warmth of the baby and built a relationship with the parent. Parents
could also decorate the isolette their baby is using, as long as the
nurse has approve of it with pictures of the family and decorations
the outside of the isolette to make it feel more like home.

CONCLUSION
Thought out this semester Ive learned and gowned my knowledge
in the NICU department and the tasks a nicu nurse has to achieve. I
had a great experience being able to be apart of and observed a
daily routine of NICU nurse.
