Proposal For Chemistry Project STPM 2015

Group members: Ashleigh Chua

Joel Yeong
Class: U6S3
Theme: Chemistry in daily life
Topic: The corrosion of metals
Hypothesis: Different solutions have different effects on the
corrosion of metals
Aim: To investigate the corrosion of metals in different solutions
Variables:
Manipulated variable: The types of solution used
Responding variable
: The effect of corrosion on metal
Constant variable : Type of metal used
Time required: 30 minutes
Cost: RM10 to RM30
Materials and apparatus:
250ml measuring cylinder
Electronic balance
500ml Beakers
30g Sodium Chloride
Stirrer
200ml green tea
200ml vinegar
200ml distilled water
200ml salt solution
200ml Carbonated drink (Cola)
5 iron nails
pH meter
Buffer solution
Universal indicator

Procedure:
1. Measure 30g of sodium chloride with the electronic balance.
2. Measure 200ml of distilled water with a measuring cylinder
and pour it
Into a beaker.
3. Dissolve the sodium chloride with distilled water in the
beaker. Stir the

solution until fully dissolved.

4. Measure the initial mass of the iron nails. Record the results
in a table.
5. An iron nail is put into the sodium chloride solution.
6. Measure the initial pH value of the solution with a pH meter.
7. The beaker is left alone for 15 days.
8. Measure the pH of the solution every 3 days for 15 days
using a pH
meter. Results are tabulated.
9. Add buffer solution into the solution to maintain the pH
value.
10. Measure the mass of the iron every 3 days for 15 days.
Results are
recorded & tabulated.
11. Steps 4-10 are repeated using 200ml vinegar, 200ml
distilled water, 200ml carbonated drink (cola) and 200ml
green tea.
