WATER CLOCKS

1500 BC
B Y: M I S S K E L LY

HISTORY
Water clocks were created to replace sundials.
The oldest known water clock was made in 1500
BC, although there may have been water clocks
before that time.
Around 325 BC, Greeks began to use water
clocks. They called them clepsydra or water
thieves
Greeks would use them to time speeches.

HOW IT WAS USED

Two forms of water clocks: inflow and outflow
Outflow water clocks were a container that was filled
with water and had measurements on the outside.
Water would leak out at a steady pace. People could tell
the time based on the amount of water that leaked out.
Inflow water clocks were a container filled with water
that would drip into another container that was labeled
with measurements. People could tell time based on the
amount of water in the second container.

BENEFITS
Unlike the sundial, observers were able to tell
time at night.

STILL USED TODAY?

No, people have been able to come up with better
ways of measuring time.
