Jerry Maguire is a sports agent working for Sports Management International

(SMI). He has so many clients and doesnt really care about them. Then one night
he had a panic attack in a hotel room. That moment made him realize what he must
do and he wrote not a memo but a mission statement titled The Things We Think
and Do Not Say: The Future of Our Business. One of the things he thought is that
agents should care more about their clients and think less of money. His mission
statement gets him a standing ovation from his co-workers but after a few days later,
the management sends Bob Sugar to fire him. Maguire and Sugar competes in
order to secure Maguires clients. Sugar manages to win most of Maguires clients.
Jerry speaks with Rod Tidwell in a very long telephone conversation which gave a
chance to Sugar to convince Maguires remaining clients not use Jerrys services.
After Tidwell finally said yes to Jerry, his clients was already convinced by Sugar.
Before leaving the office, Jerry announces that he will start a new company of his
own, gets the office goldfish and asks who is going with him. Only Dorothy, an
accountant in SMI that he met in the airport, stands up and agrees then they walk
out of the office. Dorothy also had an older sister and they live together in a house in
which the living room became the place where divorced women talks about the men
in their lives.
After his visit to his home, Cushman, a superstar quarterback, also stays with
Jerry but in the end Sugar also convinces him to sign with SMI. Jerrys last hope to
get back again to where he was having success was lost. He doesnt have any
clients anymore except Rod Tidwell.
Arguing with his girlfriend, Avery, Jerry breaks up with her. Jerry then in turn
received a punch and a kick from Avery. She tells him he cant hurt her and that he is
a loser. With him free from his girlfriend, he turns to Dorothy, captures her heart and
became close to her son Ray. Dorothy felt that she is the most wonderful woman in
the world with Jerry beside her. Their relationship grew closer after their date in
which prior to that Ray hugged Jerry and kisses him like his own father. This made
Dorothy feel touched and amazed with her own son showing that kind of attitude

towards Jerry. The next day while Jerry was in the hallway he heard Dorothy and her
sister talking in the kitchen. During their talk Dorothy said that she loves Jerry but
without knowing that Jerry was listening. Then Ray called Jerry and this made
Dorothy and her sister aware that Jerry was only in the hallway. This became a
really awkward morning for the two them but Jerry only focused on Ray as they had
their breakfast.
With no other clients, Jerry is now left with Tidwell. Over the several months,
Tidwell tells Jerry that he is not trying hard enough to get him a contract and he has
the Kwan which he defined as love, respect, community and money in a whole
package. Jerry tells him that he is doing well enough for the money he wants. Jerry
sticks with him and they got only a $1.7 million contract but they still accepted it as
there was no other options.
Having financial difficulties, Dorothy is forced to move for a new job. Her sister
told her not to be distracted with Jerrys words. Before going, she talked with Jerry
but when she is about to go, Jerry proposes marriage to her. This made her cry
because of happiness and she changes her mind not to move. Dorothy then marries
Jerry. Jerry achieved to be like a father to Ray but is emotionally (not like Tidwells)
and physically (far because of work) distant with Dorothy. As time between them
passed by, their relationship was growing distant from each other. This made
Dorothy sad and unsatisfied as this was not what she wants. She thought Jerry
loves her. Even though Dorothy loves Jerry very much, she is forced to break up
with him because she believes that he doesnt love her. Jerry gets to be with Rod for
work
The game before the Monday Night Football game, Tidwell already had an
injury while catching the ball. In the Monday Night Football game, Rod plays well
with him pulling the team up but held back after by the opponent. Then Rod ran to
anticipate the ball to catch it and had a touchdown. But the touchdown, which was
an upside-down way, made Rod to be unconscious. This made her wife, Marcee,
very nervous because it was stated in the contract that they would not receive

anything if Rod gets injured aside from the concern from her husband. If Rod would
be injured it will be a double blow to them. But after a couple of minutes, Rod gets
up, danced in the field, climbed up the railings on the audience seats and sustained
no injuries. That made the crowd go wild, cheering for Rods team. This was an
amazing moment for Rods team. After the game, Jerry and Rod hugged each other
in front other agents and athletes and showed that their relationship is no more of a
business one but of a personal one which is also one of the things in Jerrys mission
statement. Jerry then remembers Dorothy and he hurriedly went back home. Back
home, Dorothy joined the divorced women group and said that men are the enemy
but she still love the enemy. Jerry then entered the house, he explains himself and
tells Dorothy he loves her and that she completes him.
Rod appears on a sports show and there he receives an $11.2 million contract
with the Cardinals. Rod cried and thanked everyone especially his wife, Marcee and
his agent, Jerry.
At the end of the movie, Jerry, Ray and Dorothy are walking in a park then
Ray picks a baseball and throws it that surprised Jerry of the distance of Rays
throw. Jerry and Dorothy then talked about Rays future possible sports career
happily.
All in all, the movie was very good. The cast performed their roles very well
sticking to the characters characteristics. Tom Cruise plays Maguire as man who
really wants greatness and happiness with a job where only success really counts.
He doesnt care as long as success can be grasped by the hands. As long as the
athletes signs the contract and they make money, it is the only thing that matters to
him. What happens to them like accidents and involved in criminal acts doesnt
affect him. Renee Zellweger plays Dorothy as a woman who believes in the guy she
loves.
The development of the story was smooth and can be understood quickly. It
showed what kind of person Maguire and Dorothy is and their relationship between

them and other people. It was shown how Maguires work change him as a person
for Dorothy and as an agent of Rod Tidwell. Also shown is the change of Rod as an
athlete to play from the heart and not from the mind. Maguire and Rod both learn to
value something other than money only. Lastly, the women, Marcee and Dorothy,
who always believed in their partners or love ones.
The only thing that prevents the relationship between Jerry and Dorothy to not
instantly break apart is the presence of Ray. He was very attached to Jerry maybe
because of the desire to have a father and he wants him to be like one. He was also
a contributor, not a major one but still significant, in terms of Jerrys change of heart
in caring for other people, thinking for their sake. From what I saw from the movie
Dorothy really considered what would Ray feels if it is about Jerry. Ray was very sad
when they would be moving out to another place and far away from Jerry.
I like the characters of Rod and Jerry because they stick together. Even
though Jerry doesnt pay not enough attention to Rod, he still chose Jerry to be his
agent and Jerry didnt gave up on Rod even though he is not playing at first. But I
think Jerry has the more effort in this regard. He endured Rods attitude and still
made him to perform on the way he wants him to. He also had a problem with
Dorothy while having also the problem with Rod. He handles the situation well and
act to it accordingly. He was able to solve all of his problems fast. He changed big
from his old business self who doesnt care of anything except success to a person
more caring agent and loving husband.
A talk is also needed to clarify things. It is needed to understand what is
happening and must be done to improve outcome. A person would then know what
will the things he would equip himself with and what things that he would be
throwing out. This is needed in order for the person to perform the right way in order
to have what he want or what the group wants. He must adjust himself, for him to
get something. Words can push people to change and do what they have to do. It
could give them a boost on the effort they are giving thus making their work more
productive and rewarding.

Relationship with others are important as it is the key to understand a person.

Interacting with many people engages oneself into a pool of different personalities
which can help you in handling different people. With knowing the person, you can
see what he or she would do on certain situations. This would be beneficial as it will
enable you to choose who would be the right one to be in a particular task or work.
Work would then become smooth and constant delays would be avoided. Aside from
work benefits you will have, there would also be a personal satisfaction on your part
that you would that you made the right choices. Understanding the person helps
yourself see what will be that person in the future.
