As a new year (2014) dawns on us, you will note that we have also changed the badge on
our cover to reflect that its another new year of leadership for us (14). And on that note
allow us to share a few thoughts and observations as we enter the clean slate of another
fresh year.
For 2013 marked the demise of another grand automotive title in the region. We mark
that with a sense of sadness. Our team respects the title, what it stands for globally and
the team that produced it. Weve also grown up reading the parent title as enthusiasts
and car lovers. All we can say is that a perfect storm of events seem to have happened
over the past few years that have put pressure on automotive titles in the region and this
is just the latest magazine to bite the dust.
That makes us extremely grateful to our readers in Oman who have ensured that Automan
has grown through the years and stands as a mascot of the automotive industry in Oman.
In terms of content, analysis and production values, we have always prided ourselves as
being the best of the breed in the region. And this year too, we shall grow.
The move into 2014 also sees us join the Tifosi and his colleagues in wishing Michael
Schumacher a speedy recovery. For someone who has epitomized speed, it is somewhat
ironical that he suffered this life-threatening injury on the slopes of a ski resort. But it is
seemingly better than the fate of poor Paul Walker who lived out his Fast and Furious role
in the manner of his passing.
Which also makes us thankful for some statistics of 2013 that actually saw a drop in the
number of fatal accidents. Every one of you will know someone who has been in an accident
and know of someone who has had injuries or lost a family member. That is not good. But
the good work of the ROP in bringing greater control over reckless speeding, constant
education and a greater awareness seems to be reversing the trend. We definitely hope
that 2014 is a year free of any incident on the road for every one of you.
Another statistic of a different sort tells a completely different story. What is the malaise
with car sales in Oman? Do we really have a situation where retail car sales have taken
a significant drop? Or is it just that some of the fringe resale and re-export business is
tapering off with competition from the manufacturer in target countries as well as a host
of regional problems? Whatever it is, 2014 will be a challenging year for the retail car
industry.
As for us Muscat residents, much of the ongoing roadwork is coming online, so travel
times a back to manageable levels perhaps just in time too considering the possibility
of a fuel price realignment. All in all, 2014 does hold a lot of promise. Wish all of you a
Happy New Year.

2014 Mitsubishi Outlander

itsubishi Motors Corporation (MMC) together
with General Automotive Company, unveiled
the all-new third generation 2014 Mitsubishi Outlander. The event took place at Shangri-las Barr al
Jissa Resort and Spa and was attended by Toshiaki
Nomura, President of Mitsubishi Motors Middle East
and Africa FZE (MMMEA); Mark Tomlinson, General
Manager of General Automotive Company; other senior member of the General Automotive Company
management. The new Outlander is a strategic, in-

novative and premium vehicle developed around

a versatile global platform and elevates the level of
luxury, refinement and fuel economy that consumers have come to expect in the affordably-priced
crossover segment. The new Outlander is offered in
5- and 7-seat configurations and is powered by either
a 2.4-litre inline-4-cylinder (GLX model) or 3.0-litre V6
GLS model) and available with Mitsubishi Motors AllWheel Control (AWC) all-wheel drive system. A new
driver-activated feature is the ECO-mode setting that

is now standard on all 2014 Outlanders. ECO-mode

helps to further reduce fuel consumption and CO2
emissions by optimising engine power on initial acceleration as well as the airflow volume of the airconditioning. Furthermore, when Outlander models
equipped with All-Wheel Control (AWC) are driven
with 4WD engaged, the driver-activated ECO-mode
will allow the vehicle to function as a 2WD vehicle until sensors instantaneously reactivate the 4WD system
when deemed necessary.

Going inland

news

itsubishi Motors seems to be finally waking up from

a period of slumber. For some strange reason, it was
almost as if the period post the 2009 car industry
crisis set the company into a period of living on
the sidelines. Other than a couple of new model
releases in the region in the form of the Lancer Fortis, ASX and exNativa Pajero Sport and some headlight and skirting refreshes, the
brand had moved into selling its staple Pajero and largely missing
the large sedan and entry SUV buyer.
Now with the new Outlander, things are set for a change. For
a company that hasnt quite been able to charge into the big
league, the new Outlander is itself no mean achievement. Over
the years the older Outlander has been seen in markets around
the world in different guises, including as badge engineered
Citroens and Peugeots. That is in itself an achievement. The car
sits in a segment of the crossover utility, developed from car-

based platforms. In this case the platform is Mitsubishis GS global

sedan platform and with some changes the platform continues on
into the 2014 edition.
Of course the first change that you notice is the styling. The
large gaping prism of the old grille with its tiger-eyes headlight
surrounds has been replaced by an elegant treatment that is
reflected by the new Mitsubishi family look. The headlights are
now logical extensions of the sleek grille and the body has become
softer, more rounded and improbably sports a higher belt-line than
before. Thats because the platform has not been significantly
dimensionally changed. At the same time, new manufacturing
processes have caught up there is increased use of high-tensile
steel as well as better NVH and insulation to make for a quieter,
more competent package. This time around the aesthetics are
better thought through and the CUV has distanced itself from the
almost stationwagon profile that it started out with. It is definitely

interesting to see that Mitsubishi has

joined the other Japanese manufacturers in
introducing hygiene features like LED DRLs.
In its new guise the car basically offers
three options the 2.4-litre engine, CVT
transmission and 5-seats, secondly the 2.4
with CVT and 7-seats or finally the 7 seater
with 3.0-litre V6 engine and six-speed auto
gearbox. And all of these are being offered
in a price band just south of RO 9,000 to just
below RO 10,000. It will be interesting to see
how the dealers manage to hold this price
bracket considering that most family sedans
are priced just about here.
The 2.4-litre unit is the 4J12 (though the
local brochure seems to classify it as the
4B12), which has been further adapted from
the SOHC 2.4-litre unit that we all know in the
Galant. With power of 166hp and 221Nm of
torque, the unit is powerful enough for most
city conditions as well as some off-roading.
The CVT that partners this engine is both
capable and almost imperceptible. And the
4WD is engaged by a button on the centreconsole that puts the transmission in a forced
split in power delivery to both front and rear
axles.
The 3.0-litre unit is the larger 6B31 V6 unit,

Partnered with a six-speed auto gearbox, this
unit takes the CUV into an interesting value
bracket offering almost Pajero like power
to weight as well as a decent turn of torque.
We took the 2.4-litre unit on a drive that
included the back roads from the Barr Al Jissah
towards Yiti and then through the hiking trail
up into the Wadi Kabir hill area. Again, this is
not the most challenging of terrains, but the
Outlander impressed with its quiet capability
we didnt even engage the 4WD button and
the CVT never complained.
The drive down from the hill was equally
eventless.
We will be featuring a full test drive of the
Outlander in the coming months issue and
will keep all further comments about the car
for that, except to say that the move to a
multi-link rear suspension is just about the
best news for the comfort and performance
angle of the car. You hardly get any jouncing
and the roll is so much in control. Take a test
yourself if you can our opinion is that the
Outlander is a hidden Diamond.

trend looks set to continue, especially with
style-conscious families desiring a versatile,

premium and spacious vehicle all of which

are available from the all-new Outlander.
The new, larger Outlander offers a very
comforting sense of quiet, protection and
safety to its occupants a quality car of
substance designed for long-haul travelling,
its more economical, dynamic, safe and has
outstanding environmental credentials. With
this in mind, the new Outlander represents
a truly segment-leading CUV, added Mark

And the contenders nominated in their respective categories are detailed as follows

2013

2014 Audi R8 V10 Plus

The second model in the line-up to wear the Plus badge, Audis engineers have skillfully added some
more performance oriented goodies in an existing set up. The R8 is the sporty halo representative of the
Audi lineup. Since introduction in 2007, its unusual iconoclastic styling and handling prowess have been
well accepted and subtle tweaks such as replacing the R-Tronic transmission in favour of a new S-Tronic
twin-clutch unit, makes it the single biggest improvement in this new generation besides the additional
output in the Plus variant.

2014 Nismo GT-R

Nissans halo sports car, the GT-R has been receiving continuous refinement since
launch and this makes the car up-to-date. Nismo, the in-house performance arm
takes that experience a level higher with direct race track GT3 driven technology
and Nismo specific enhancements inside out. A Nismo-tuned GT-R with 591bhp
and with some track focused additions lapped the Nrburgring in 7min:08.679sec,
making it officially the fastest volume production model in the world.

2014 McLaren MP-4 12C Spider

McLaren added a convertible version of the MP4-12C for its 2014 line-up. McLaren cleverly designed and
engineered the MP4-12C in coupe form with an open roof version in mind from the very beginning. That
means the carbon-fibre tub needed no extra strengthening for the Spider application. While, the car
is slighty heavier than its solid roof sibling, it comes with all the bells and whistles and updated engine
management and hence is as equally engaging to drive.

2014 Bentley GTC Speed

The Bentley Continental GT Speed convertibles spec sheet is designed to delight. The 616hp
twin turbo W12 is capable of a drag-limited 320 plus km/h. It can cruise along at triple-digit
velocities all day and is the fastest four-seat convertible in the world. Actually, the Continental
GT Speed convertible one of the fastest series-production cars ever built and will outpace
a Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG or BMW M6 without batting an eyelid. The Speed variants get
bumped up output and torque figures.

news

2013

2013 Aston Martin Vanquish

For a loss-making entity funded by a venture capitalist, the carmaker thinks that the new Vanquish is the
greatest and ultimate grand tourer car it has ever produced and hopes that it will help reverse its flagging
fortunes. The top-of-the-line model is still based on the VH architecture that debuted with the DB9 in
2003 and as the DBS replacement, it is offered slightly cheaper.

2013 Ferrari Berlinetta

The F12berlinetta not only ushers in a whole new generation of Prancing Horse 12-cylinders but
is also the most powerful and high performance Ferrari ever built. Thats not all. Exceptional
strides have also been made with regard to fuel consumption and emissions both of which have
been slashed by 30 per cent, making the F12berlinetta a benchmark for its reference segment.

2014 Lamborghini Aventador Roadster

Lamborghinis Aventador Roadster, which features a two-piece forged composite targa top that can be
removed to expose the cabin to the elements for the ultimate wind-in-your-hair experience. What can be
more outrageous than Lamborghinis stealth-bomber-inspired Aventador coupe? Besides out and out
driving pleasure, Lamborghini has added two new technologies to the coupe [which also debut on the
roadster] for the latest model year in the interests of efficiency and the environment.

2013 Bentley GT Speed

By definition, the Continental GT is definitely not a sports car, but the way it is configured and
engineered, it offers an amazing amount of fun driving in any situation. Compared to say, the
Nissan GT-R which is capable of topping this Bentley in every measured performance test, but
the Bentley more than makes up for it in luxury, comfort, and style. Even though the GT-R is
faster, theres no reason not to be impressed with what the Bentley Continental GT Speed is
able to accomplish ultimately. There is nothing else on the road this big and this fast.

Automan Car Of The Year 2013

15

Finalists
2013

2014 Kia Cadenza

The Cadenza is Kias full-size luxury car

that was launched in 2009 to replace the
Opirus. It has been refreshed for 2013 with
new corporate styling and a host of feature
upgrades.

2013 Toyota Avalon

2014 Chevrolet Impala

The Impala has been completely reengineered for 2014, and it has become one
of the most popular sedans on the market.
Even the base Impala variant comes loaded
with convenience and comfort features,
many of which simply arent available in its
direct competitors.

One of Toyotas key Australia manufactured front

wheel drive exports for Middle East, the new Avalon
is slightly shorter and wider than the previous model.
The model has become stylish very much in line with
Toyotas current design language. The new car feels
like a luxury car both in terms of quality and touch
points as it comes with better materials, fit and finishes
besides host of comfort and convenience features.
Powertrain engineering is carried over.

2014 Audi S6

BMWs supremacy in the segment was thwarted

when the all-wheel-drive 2014 Audi S6 arrived
in the scene with its potent twin-turbocharged
V8, sophisticated air suspension, and top class
handling. The S6 represents a new direction for
Audi sedans. The 2014 S6 is a genuine super
sedan that any automotive enthusiast would feel
privileged to own.

2014 Cadillac CTS

The all-new third generation CTS

launched a few months ago is like a car
with a very specific mission. Cadillacs
designers and engineers have worked
together in tandem to produce an
American global model which is quite
capable of taking on the finest from
Europe and Japan.

2014 Lexus IS350

Now in its third generation, this hot sedan

packs a hefty punch when it comes to
competing with the German premium
brands. For the Japanese brand, the IS
has successfully elevated consumers
expectations in the entry-level luxury sedan
class. The redesigned 2014 Lexus IS 350
features notable upgrades, including a
new interior with richer materials, a bigger
backseat and impressive equipment list.

Automan Car Of The Year 2013

2013

2014 Audi A3 sedan

The A3 is Audis ticket in the compact sedan market. It is Volkswagen Groups first model on its new MQB
platform. Audi expects the sporty A3 will grow its market share significantly with its enhanced feature
pack. The sedan comes standard with a 1.8-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine and front-wheeldrive. In terms of features, the A3 sedan offers much more standard equipment than its key domestic
rival Mercedes-Benz. Leather upholstery, a panoramic glass roof, xenon headlights, and LED taillights are
standard on the base model of the A3 sedan but optional on the Mercedes.

2014 Porsche Panamera

Second generation Panamera is all about efficiency be it emissions or fuel efficiency. Porsche has also
widened the line-up with a hybrid and entry level V6. The naturally aspirated, entry-level 3.6-litre V6
gets 10 more horsepower, for a total of 310 and unlike the Cayennes V6 which is borrowed from a VW,
this engine is Porsches own and is based on a V8 less a cylinder from each bank. As part of downsizing,
the 400hp, naturally aspirated 4.8-litre V8 [in the Panamera S and 4S] makes way for a twin-turbo
3.0-litre V6 and produces 420hp. The hybrid uses Audi-sourced supercharged 3.0-litre V6 and the new
electric motor offers double the output. All Panamera models are equipped with a ZF-sourced sevenspeed dual-clutch automatic, with the exception of the diesel and the hybrid versions, which are fitted
with an eight-speed torque-converter automatic.

2013 Jaguar XF 2.0

The Jaguar XF was launched as a 2009 model and its engines were upgraded for 2010. In 2012,
its styling was revised. Elegant, flowing lines make it a more visually interesting alternative to
many of the better-selling cars in its class. The Jaguar XF has presence, that intangible quality
that allows it to stand out in any line of similar luxury sport entries. To help widen the models
appeal, Jaguar introduced two all-new engines: a 3.0-litre supercharged V6 and a 2.0-litre fourcylinder. Both are meant to offer buyers better fuel efficiency than the existing V8. While the
entry four pot is unusual for a premium segment, Jaguar is now amongst the industry leaders
practicing efficiency and downsizing.

2014 Audi A6

With the 2014 A6, Audi thinks it is its best midsize sedan yet. But the perennial question stands:
is it better than the 5 Series and the E-Class? The A6 lineup was completely redesigned for the
2012 model year and depending on option the A6 turbocharged 2.0-litre inline-4 is offered with
continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT) and standard with front-wheel drive. Audis
Quattro all-wheel drive system with an 8-speed automatic transmission is optional on the A6
2.0T. Theres also a fire-breathing supercharged 310hp 3.0-litre V6 version in the line-up.

2014 Hyundai Centennial

Since 2009, Hyundai has been moving into premium luxury territory with an array of models. Going headto-head with Audi, BMW, Mercedes, Lexus and Infiniti at the top end, the Centennial luxury sedan which
the carmaker clearly benchmarked against the Mercedes S-Class, BMW 7-Series, Audi A8 and Lexus LS
460 seems to be getting acknowledged in the market. GCC sales of the Centennial jumped 147 per cent
last year and for its price the Centennial offers a decent package of performance, comfort, luxury and all
the technology to keep you safe and happy.

2013 Cadillac ATS

An entry level model that Cadillac was desperate to introduce also takes off a lot of burden from the
new CTS. The ATS is clearly positioned in the line-up with new role and responsibility. Its no secret that
the Cadillac aimed the rear-wheel-drive ATS squarely at the premium Germans, particularly the segment
leading BMW 3 Series. Similar in size, the ATS is offered with fine build quality, good performance and an
involving drive along with a supple ride.

2013 Kia Quoris

Kia has been slowly adding larger, more expensive models to its line-up and the South Korean brand
managed to stage a coup of sorts with the large rear wheel drive luxury K9 or Quoris sedan. While it
represents Kias ability and premium luxury aspirations for the future, the present task is more on how
to market this car which has been benchmarked against premium German brands from conception
to creation. With the Quoris, Kia is targeting the Audi A6, BMW 5 Series and Mercedes-Benz E-Class
buyers.

2014 Toyota Corolla

The 11th generation Corolla launched a few weeks

ago highlights once again Toyotas determination in
keeping its global bestseller the best in class features
based on bulletproof engineering. Slightly bigger
than before, the incoming car is more stylish, more
fuel-efficient and better-performing rivals in the
compact sedan segment. What makes it interesting
now is the theres better differentiation and for the
first time the Corolla gets a 2.0-litre power pot.

2014 Mazda6

That Mazda is pretty serious about the new

2014 Mazda 6 is quite evident when you see it.
Aiming to be at the top of the segment Mazda
presents a stylish car that offers promising
performance and fuel economy while still
being roomy, practical and fun to drive. What
does separate the new 6 from most of the
competition is its sporty, involving personality
and a host of efficiency technologies under its
theme-inspired sheetmetal.

2014 Mercedes-Benz
E-Class

The 2014 Mercedes-Benz E-Class comes

with new sharper looking sheetmetal
and is available in several models and
iterations. The new E-Class will be
remembered for many breakthrough
technologies particularly the intelligent
drive besides a host of electronic
enhancements in pursuit of safety.

Automan Car Of The Year 2013

2013

2013 GMC Terrain

There wasnt a lot of activity in this segment in 2013 by competitors, but pick-up and SUV specialist GMC
kept the flame up and running with a host of new SUV introductions. The 2014 GMC Terrain is a slightlylarger-than-compact crossover which accommodates five adults in comfort and offers a relatively high
level of luxury for this segment. GMC offers the car with generous standard equipment including a 7in
touchscreen and a rearview camera. The cars interior accommodations set it apart from competitors.

2014 Rolls-Royce Drophead Coupe

One interesting characteristic of a modern-day Rolls-Royce is that it seems no two examples are exactly alike
and bespoke options account for 90 per cent of the marques business in the Middle East. The Drophead
Coupe is also no exception. Rolls-Royce engineered the Coupe with history and heritage of the Goodwood
racetrack in mind and the cars sporty pretensions and ostentatious demeanor is what makes it stand out.

2014 Bentley Flying Spur

2014 Mercedes-Benz
S-Class

Bentleys entry-level sedan moves into its

second generation with the idea of more
clarity and uptodate engineering. It loses the
Continental pre-fix of its name and inherits
more Mulsanne styling cues in its sheetmetal.
The lavishly equipped Spur is a mansionon-wheels with more than a few comforts of
home.

2014 Rolls-Royce Wraith

Technically, the two-door version of the

smaller Ghost, the Wraith is Rolls-Royces most
accessible model. The Wraith rides on a heavily
modified version of the BMW 7-series chassis and
is powered by a 6.6-litre V12. With its swoopy, low
roofline and a sportier design, the Wraith aims
to broaden the marques appeal to a younger
audience. The Wraith is expensive than the Bentley
CGT.

Its less than a year old in the market

and Mercedes plants are working
overtime to cope with huge orders. The
success of the new model proves two
things: first the carmaker is beginning
to understand the psych of the markets
worldwide and secondly, has been able
to deliver a truly world class car in terms
of design, engineering, performance and
unique features. The top sedan model is
expected to help the brand regain lost
ground.

Finalists
2013

2014 BMW 7 Series

A perennial S-Class rival, the current top of the line sedan is offered with turbocharged engines with six,
eight or twelve cylinders and an extended-wheelbase variant. While the previous-generation 7-Series
ushered in the controversial Bangle era of BMW styling, the latest model takes a much more conservative
and elegant approach while continuing to offer responsive driving dynamics along with an updated version
of the automakers iDrive infotainment system. What keeps the car in news is a host of new standard
equipment for the latest model year and a dynamic instrument cluster.

2014 Maserati Quattroporte

Keeping in mind the global trends and the brands aspirations, the new Quattroporte sensibly moves
into competitive territory with new aspirations but without forgetting its very sporty Italian sedan roots.
Maserati has also widened the curb appeal by adding a V6 version to the line-up.

2014 Rolls-Royce Phantom Coupe

The Phantom Coupe has the same dimensions as the Drophead Coupe, at 18.5 feet long and 6.5 feet
wide, but a half an inch lower due to the hardtop. Powertrain packaging is identical and most of the
bespoke features are available to order. Since it sheds the convertible top, the Coupe also benefits from
a bigger petrol tank and boot space [when compared to its droptop sibling]. End of the day, it basically
comes down to personal choice when choosing this motor car.

2013 BYD S6

Products from Chinese carmaker BYD are getting noticed in the region and the attitude towards Chinese
cars also seems to be changing as the products get better and better. The S6 SUV is a fine example of
such a move. The 5-seater has more than a passing profile resemblance with the previous RX from Lexus
and gets an economical under 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine. Fit finish and materials are pretty impressive
for the price point.

2013 Toyota RAV4

Toyotas bestselling small SUV is back with vengeance. Fully redesigned and sporting a new design
language and host of upgraded features and capabilities, the new RAV4 actually sets the benchmark
in the segment once again. The SUV strikes a good balance between ride comfort and sure-footed
handling. For 2013, the RAV4 comes with a four-cylinder only and also dispenses with a third-row seat
option. On the transmission front, it gets a six-speed transmission which replaces the old four-speed
automatic helping improve fuel economy and making it more responsive.

Automan Car Of The Year 2013

2013

2014 Hyundai Santa Fe

For a midsize crossover SUV manufacturer, just being merely good isnt good enough anymore and
Hyundai has taken note of that with the new Santa Fe. The new Santa Fe is redesigned and markedly
improved and offers everything shoppers have come to expect from the brand in recent years -outstanding value, attractive styling and feature content. The Santa Fe also moves into the three-row
crossover segment also with a variant.

2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Chrysler Groups master blaster Jeep Grand Cherokee receives a host of changes for 2014. Highlights
include a refreshed exterior design, a new eight-speed automatic transmission and an updated interior
with new technology features.

2013 Nissan Pathfinder

Nissans product planners have worked out the core theme of the new Pathfinder to reflect more
consumer friendliness even if it meant sacrificing some core performance features. This sevenseater Pathfinder lost some of its predecessors off-road and towing capabilities but the cars
interior has gained a lot of space with genuine adult-size seating in both the second and third
rows. Superior ride and car-like handling qualities are there, thanks to the award-winning 3.5-litre
V6 and a continuously variable transmission (CVT) set-up.

2014 Lexus LX 570

The 2014 Lexus LX 570 moves on essentially unchanged following its 2013 overhaul with new features.
It is more luxurious and the corporate spindle grille is now part of its signature front end. Despite the
migration to unibody architecture by many SUV makers, the LX 570 still a classic body-on-frame SUV with
prioritized performance and handling capabilities.

2013 Audi Q5

Its no secret that the 2014 Audi Q5 is one of the global media favourites in the compact luxury
crossover SUV class. Audis updates are limited to equipment changes across the various trim
levels and the base turbo charged 2.0-litre gets a power increase to 220hp.

2013

2014 Range Rover Sport

Despite its luxury appearance, the new Range Rover Sport is quite deceptive when it comes to off-road
performance. Completely overhauled for 2014, the SUV is lighter, more nimble, and more comfortable
than the outgoing model. Despite of its weight loss, the new model is actually longer and wider than its
predecessors and has allowed more passenger room in the cabin. For the first time, Land Rover is able to
offer a third-row seat for young adults.

2013 Infiniti FX50 SV

Formula One champion Sebastian Vettel is also Infinitis performance division director. The FX50 is
Vettels company car and Vettel has added some extra panache to it. Several track inspired cues are
there and there are some performance enhancements too.

2014 Jaguar F-Type

The first roadster from Jaguar in 40 years, the 2014 F-Type was designed to offer a thrilling blend of style,
performance and luxury. The model represents the first all-new Jaguar sports car since the legendary
E-Type that debuted in 1961 and ceased production in 1974 and hence a lot of expectations. Jaguar seem
to have ticked most of the boxes right with this new model. The F-Type is every bit as satisfying to drive as
its evocative styling suggests, however, it might not measure up to the venerable Porsche 911 in every test
of performance. It does impress to the emotional side of driving and thus ranks among the best open-top
sports cars in current times.

2013 Porsche Cayman

The Porsche Cayman is fully redesigned for 2014 and is the near perfect sports car from the brand.
Now in its second generation, it is lighter, faster and much closer to the 911. With the styling,
engineering and performance revisions, the Cayman really does deliver the best of both worlds.

2014 lexus gx 460

Not much happened in this segment as most automakers are looking at downsized options more than
before. As a result only a handful brands and their models continue to serve the needs in large SUV markets
like Middle East and North America. Key to the SUVs peerless off-road capability is its combination of a
highly durable, deformation-resistant, body-on-frame construction with the unique level of guidance and
technical support it offers drivers. Now, it gets the corporate makeover, including style upgrades.

Automan Car Of The Year 2013

2013

2013 Toyota Yaris

This global B+ best selling model from the Japanese brand gets full-on treatment for 2013. Toyota
has reengineered the car to bring it on par with its extensively refreshed line-up while ensuring that
it can lead the segment despite intense competition these days. The result is a stunning looker with
bullet-proof engineering and reliability.

2013 Nissan Tida

Nissans new Tida is bigger and better. All the quirks related to the older model be it styling or features
have been artfully looked into and worked upon. Theres a spacious interior with a genuine adult-friendly
rear accommodation, comfortable ride and many convenience features. Performance and driving dynamics
are acceptable but certain features which could have been addressed to have been overlooked.

2013 Volkswagen Polo sedan

The first India-built Volkswagen to hit the Middle East markets which is slightly longer than the
European hatchback model. It is packaged and priced very sensibly as an entry model while
offering class leading features such as rear legroom for passengers and efficiency oriented
powertrain.

2013 Mitsubishi Lancer Fortis

A new variant of the Lancer family from one of Mitsubishis global Asia-based manufacturing set-ups
comes with couple of distinctive advantages rock solid engineering and advantages of low tariff
production.

2013 Peugeot 301

At corporate level, theres a lot of talk about the French manufacturer in business circles, but at
product level, the brand is firing on all cylinders as it aims to become a truly global player. The
recently introduced 301 is Peugeots entry level sedan offered in three variants. While the effort is
commendable, Peugeot has still a lot to learn and improvise in order to make its presence solidly
felt in the fiercely competitive segment currently dominated by Asian brands.

2014 VW Golf GTI

The 2014 Volkswagen GTI, based on the seventh-generation Golf and this means it is built on the new
MQB platform. In base trim, the Volkswagen GTI is rated at 210hp and for the first time, Volkswagen
offers a Performance Package that, among other things, will bump power to 220hp for select markets.
Engineering upgrades like the addition of a proper limited-slip differential, along with DSG six-speed twinclutch automatic makes this car truly entertaining.

2014 VW Golf

The tamer version of the GTI made its entry before the performance GTI variant and keeps the brands
hatchback aspirations alive. Interior design and quality, steering, brakes, ride, handling, thoughtful
touches, smart dash, spacious, safety technology applications are second to none.

2013 Mercedes-Benz A-Class

The smallest new entry level member made a grand entry in the Middle East last year. With its new, thirdgeneration A-class model that uses Mercedes CC (Compact Car) architecture, the brand is looking at
regaining lost territory much more seriously with an exceptionally packaged deal. The production model
follows faithfully the features from the concept which Mercedes has been teasing us with ever since. The
A-Class is stylish, and packed with safety and high-tech features normally found on more expensive models.

2013 Alfa Romeo Guilietta

Chrysler Groups Italian premium brand has very few models to offer the Middle East markets,
but it does try to create some noise with the stylish Guilietta hatchback. Arguably, the Giulietta is
the most chic and competent Alfa Romeo sold in the Middle East capable of narrowing the gap
between the Italian way of doing things and the rival Europeans or Japanese.

2013 Volvo V40

Volvo keeps surprising the markets despite its new Chinese ownership and way of doing things. For the
first time, Volvo has entered the small car arena with a car that caters to tastes of the market with demands
style, performance and features in a hatchback format. For Volvo, the V40 means a bit more. The new
model essentially serves as a new range entry point in place of the discontinued C30 three-door and does
a pretty impressive job too.

2013 ford focus st

Ford created a formidable challenger in the perennial front wheel drive hot hatch segment
leader in the form of the Focus ST. Developed by Ford Team RS, the European arm of Ford Motor
Companys Global Performance Vehicle group, the ST brings in a lot of technology from the
group be it Ecoboost or sophisticated chassis management or electronics. With the ST, it is yet
another proof point from Ford that small cars are anything but boring.

2013 MINI Coupe

Its very difficult to distinguish negligible differences in performance versus the regular Cooper
variant and this means that the 2013 Mini Cooper Coupe really only delivers a sportier look, along
with some inherent design drawbacks. Many in the business think that the Coupe is a styling
exercise and if its sleeker profile appeals to customers, then perhaps its drawbacks are an easier
pill to swallow. However, a key USP with the JCW models now is the availability of automatic
transmission.

Audi to expand model range from 49 to

60 eschew its truck underpinnings

udis delivery of 1.5mn vehicles in 2013 PR also contained a passing reference to the future of its lineup. This news was delivered at the Audi
Forum Ingolstadt during the handover of an A3 Sportback to a customer. CEO
Rupert Stadler said Audi will expand our product range from the current 49
to 60 models. We see a great deal of potential, particularly in the SUV segment and in the especially prestigious fullsize category. We have little idea
of what kinds of cars that could entail right now, other than the Q1, but wed
like to think it could include an RS8, a production version of the Sport Quattro
concept and even the Nanuk.

Audi has hit its target

of 1.5mn in annual

than planned and the
new model additions
will be part of Audis
ambitious push to
reach two million annual sales by 2020.

Breaking
news

Audi has reportedly filed applications to trademark several nameplates which could indicate the companys plans for future models. First up is the SQ2
which hints at a high-performance version of the Q2. Ditto with the SQ4 which will represent a more powerful derivative of the Q4 and moving up the
ladder is the Q9 designation which indicates Audi plans an even bigger range-topping SUV model to sit above the Q7. Lastly, the F-tron trademark application hints at a fuel-cell production car in future. Meanwhile, Audi has announced plans to invest $30.3bn into its research and development operations
through 2018. Audi will spend about 70 per cent of that investment on developing new models and technology.

Skoda SUV confirmed

koda boss Winfried Vahland has confirmed preliminary details of the unnamed SUV which will
be based on the VW MQB platform and launched as
early as 2016. Vahland said the new model will be
based on the production version of the VW CrossBlue concept which is due for a 2015 release. The
vehicle is expected to be about 4.6m long and will
be offered with five and seven-seat configurations.
In addition, customers will have the possibility to
select from standard FWD and optional AWD. Engine lineup is not expected to go beyond a 4-cylinder 2.0-litre petrol and 1.6-litre turbodiesel. A diesel
electric hybrid variant for Europe is also planned.

he arrival of the Audi A5 Sportback, BMW 2-Series

Gran Coupe and Mercedes CLA seems to have
ignited a lot of passion in the compact performance
segment and it seems that other European brands
could follow suit. If reports coming out from Europe
are to be believed then Peugeot seems to be eyeing
the hot segment with a new car that will be based
on the 308 mechanicals called the 408 GT. It will reportedly slot between the 308 and 408 and will used
tweaked carryover powertrains from the 308, so
petrol choices are expected to have outputs ranging
from 130hp to 270hp besides diesel options. If everything pans out, the 408 GT could be launched in 2016.

ia has announced plans to introduce a new sports

secret but they did confirm in December last that it
would follow the 2+2 sports car format. The concept
has been designed by Kia designers in Irvine, California. Kia also said the car was designed to deliver

Chevrolets exit could

be Opels gain in Europe

n a surprise announcement
today, Chevrolet has confirmed
it will stop selling cars across
Europe at the end of 2015. The
announcement comes just days
after GM CEO Dan Akerson
expressed his wish to put more
distance between Germany-based Opel and the
Bowtie brand. When the brand was launched in
Europe in 2005, it focused on selling low-cost cars that
were little more than rebadged, South Korean-built
Daewoo models. The business model was unpopular
and the company was hit hard by the economic crisis
that rocked Europe several years ago. Chevrolet
hastily tried to move upmarket and woo European
buyers by focusing on its American heritage, but
Europes customers were not so convinced. Sales
have been stagnant at under 200,000 units with no
chances of improvement, management decided
to back off. However, Chevrolets halo models like
the Corvette and the Camaro will continue to be
imported and will most likely be distributed through
Opel dealerships. Similarly, Opel dealerships will
honour Chevrolet warranties and provide owners
with parts and service.
The final nail in Chevrolets coffin came from Opel, GMs main European
division. Most of the products from these two brand are aimed at the same
target audience and GM believes that shuttering Chevrolet will help Opel to
return to profitability in its home market after years of huge losses.

igh production costs and just a two model domestic market portfolio and limited export potential isnt
enough to sustain operations for any car manufacturer and Holden, GMs Australia arm has just learnt
that the hard way. Holden and Toyota are Australias two leading car manufacturers and Toyota successfully
exports 70 per cent of its production to Middle East. Middle East markets get the Camry and Avalon, two of
Toyota Australias key export models. The future of the Holden brand was thrown into question earlier last
month when General Motors announced that it would cease Australian manufacturing by 2017. Holden chairman and managing director Mike Devereux played down speculation that the decision was forced by the
governments lack of commitment to the industry. This is a General Motors decision, he said. We have all
the information we feel that we need to make the conclusion that in relativity to the other economies that we
can build cars, and I dont think this would be any surprise to anybody, that it is more viable to do that in other
places than Australia. Devereux also acknowledged the impact GMs decision would have on Australia, especially given Holdens 65-year presence as a manufacturer in that country. Holden will become a full importer
from 2017, just a year after traditional rival Ford ends its manufacturing operations in Australia.

Top executive changes at Hyundai North America

ited by most analysts and industry insiders as the chief engineer of Hyundais massive growth in
North America over the last few years, the brands North American market CEO, John Krafcik,
will step down at the close of his contract with the automaker on December 31, 2013. Krafciks will
be succeeded by executive vice president of sales David Zuchowski this month. Krafcik had been in
charge of Hyundais operations in North America since late 2008 and had been a product development and strategic planning chief with the Korean automaker. His resume also included nearly a
decade and a half at Ford Motor Company prior to arriving at Hyundai. Its been a sincere privilege
and honour to lead Hyundai Motor America over the past five years, and I am confident that with
Daves succession, our brand will continue to expand and thrive for years to come, said Krafcik in a
statement. Zuchowsike has led Hyundais sales and marketing operations since late 2007. Previously,

China ends tariffs on cars

imported from US

hina currently levies tariffs on nearly 80 per cent of vehicles made in the US and sold in the Peoples Republic.
Some cars are charged 22 per cent import duties and vehicles
included in this category are mostly cars and SUVs with 2.5-litre engines and larger. This aspect even affected vehicles
from non-American brands like BMW and Mercedes also that
are built in the US and then exported to China.

einz-Jakob Neusser, Volkswagens new head of research and development, has

confirmed the automaker is still looking into launching a low-cost lineup of cars,
vans and crossovers that will compete against Renaults Dacia division and Nissans
reborn Datsun.
We are still working on the cost side. Whats clear is that we will only make this car
if it meets our standards on safety, ride, handling, comfort and so on - and that it can
be made profitably. It must be durable, precise and meet all the quality standards
people expect from us,said the executive.
Neusser hinted full details about the upcoming low-cost brand will be unveiled over
the next year. He did not mention precisely what markets the cars will be sold in, but
he previously confirmed they will be designed and built with the input of a jointventure partner.
Although pure speculation, a potential scenario is that Volkswagen engineers will
develop the cars basic structure in Germany and the rest of the design work will be
carried out by one of the automakers joint-venture partners in China.

though Porsche made the Cayenne Type 955

two companies werent as tightly integrated
they are today, especially after Porsches

In its role as Germanys sports car brand

Porsche has had some tumultuous years.
Beginning as a rather low volume sports
car manufacturer, it catapulted into the big
league with the Cayenne in 2002. At the time,

Today, it only seems logical that the Macan

is debuting in the guise that it has taken. In
terms of platform, it uses a variant of the
parent groups MLB platform that is also used
on the Audi Q5, it looks not much a smaller
Cayenne as it looks like a Cayman on steroids
and it is targeted in that all-new sweet spot
that appeals to luxury customers all around
the world the X3, Q5 and GLK segment. A
Porsche SUV in that bracket answers a lot of
needs. For starters it is a Porsche, will come
with extremely powerful engines and all the
bells and whistles that you find in a Porsche
these days and carries the advantage of being

European winter is not quite the

most conducive time to be talking
about the next car. When the chill
of the winds from the Arctic Circle
hit you, all you want is the comfort
of a warm bed inside your hotel room. And
no amount of woolies are going to make any
difference if you have to drive in the snow.
But this time around the appeal and the
setting were different. We were in Dusseldorf
to participate in a technology workshop
being held for the forthcoming Macan. And
at 5-degrees C, with a hint of a winter sun,
it was almost as if Porsche had managed the
weather too.

in a size segment that spells responsibility

in Europe, luxury in China and India and
sportiness in the United States.
Porsche should have addressed this logical
point sooner, considering that the Q5 platform
has been available for a few years now, but
better late than never the Cajun (the project
code, as in Cayenne Junior) was hinted at and
the Macan has now landed.
But thats just the point that Porsche needs
to take its buyers through as it seeks to set up
the market for the Macan. Is it just a soupedup Q5? Are we looking at a smaller Cayenne?
Or is the relationship more akin to that the
911 and the Cayman have? Thats why we
were at the ADAC course near Dusseldorf, to
be taken through the fine print that makes up
the major differences.
Seeing the Macan in the flesh for the first

The use of tyres on the Macan is typical of

a sportscar: The vehicle is designed to use
mixed tyres with different dimensions at the
front and rear axle. The mixed tyres emphasise
the sportscar look of the Porsche Macan and
also offer some dynamic advantages.
In combination with the all-wheel drive
system designed for tail-heavy vehicles,
the wider tyres on the rear axle increase
traction and enhance driving stability. The

front tyres enable sporty yet precise steering

manoeuvres, thereby contributing to the
agility of the vehicle, too. Overall, the mixed
tyres allow for more flexible tyre tuning and,
by helping to achieve excellent rear-end
stability, contribute to the Macans exceptional
driving performance.
Key objectives when developing the tyres
included optimum vehicle stability and driving

pleasure, best-in-class braking distances,

low rolling resistance and a good balance of

time doesnt take away from the thrill of

seeing a new champ. It isnt quite a smaller
clone of the Cayenne in the looks department,
even though we were told a few times about
the similarity. The major difference is that
the hood is now a clamshell design, with
cutouts for the headlights all sports car

like in that. And when you open the hood,

all you see is a large polymer engine cover.
The engine cover is also designed to serve as
an air-intake manifold for the engine, routing
air up from the front and splitting it to the
intakes. The shut-line now runs horizontally
off from the top of the air-dam through the

fender region, actually cutting the wheel-bay

at the top. Even if the rest of the car wasnt so
good looking, we would have given full marks
just for this treatment. The rear is all sports

storage volume. There is no chance that the
company will ever squeeze in two jump seats

The 3.6-litre V6 biturbo engine has been redeveloped specifically for the Macan Turbo
and unleashes its maximum output of 400hp
(294 kW) at 6,000 rpm giving the Macan
Turbo unrivalled performance within the
compact SUV segment. Two turbochargers
with a boost pressure of up to 1.2 bar ensure
powerful ventilation of the 90-degree V6
engine. This power results in acceleration
from zero to 100 km/h in just 4.8secs (4.6
seconds with the Sport Chrono package
fitted) and a top speed of 266km/h. The new
Porsche engine is based on the three-litre V6
biturbo engine with a stroke that has been
increased from 69 millimetres to 83mm.
The Macan S is powered by the new threelitre V6 biturbo engine which, like the 3.6-litre
version, was developed by Porsche and is
manufactured by Porsche in Zuffenhausen,
Germany. The engine is particularly highrevving, thanks to its 96mm bore and short
69mm stroke. The engineers focused on
providing uniform performance development
and an even torque curve. By combining two
turbochargers, positioned in a compact form
on the left and right, which were designed
specifically for this engine and together deliver
a boost pressure of up to 1.0 bar, exceptional
performance values have been achieved: The
engine reaches its maximum power of 340
hp (250 kW) at between 5,500 and 6,500

34

rpm. Sprinting from 0 to 100km/h takes just

5.4 seconds (5.2secs with the Sport Chrono
package fitted), and the vehicle reaches a top
speed of around 254km/h.
Both of the V6 biturbo engines feature Porsche
VarioCam Plus, a system for continuous and
variable inlet and outlet camshaft control
with valve-lift adjustment on the intake side,
effective on one intake valve per cylinder.
This system allows the engine to respond in
a flexible manner to the relevant performance
requirements.
The result is spontaneous acceleration and
exceptionally smooth running. The revised
direct fuel injection (DFI) concept with multihole injectors and a high pressure of 200
bar enables optimum fuel distribution. DFI
also improves internal cooling within the
combustion chamber, as the fuel-air mixture
is generated in the cylinder directly. The
resulting higher compression ratio provides
greater engine power and better engine
efficiency. The turbochargers have been
tailored to the engines and are capable of
building up the boost very quickly.
Integrated dry-sump lubrication and a
modified oil sump shape have been developed
for the petrol engines destined for use in the
Macan. These modifications enable optimum

engine lubrication even in extreme driving

situations. They also contribute to a low centre
of gravity while allowing the ground clearance
to be increased. The oil pump operates on
demand and is driven by the balancer shaft
module.
The diesel-powered 3.0-litre is also available
for other markets and will generate 258 hp
and a flat 580Nm of torque. This engine is
taken from the Cayenne and modified. The 0
to 100 sprint takes 6.3secs on this engine
not bad for an oil-burner.

Though a bit late in the day, Porsche seems to have thought out the
Macan as a complete package, suitable for world audiences. Between
diesel and petrol engines and a choice of ride and lux packages, the
Macan will appeal as much to the newly affluent buyer in the BRIC
countries as it will to the established Porsche afficionado in Germany

here, but then they havent done that in the

Cayenne either.
The interiors are straight out of their
sports cars, with the steering axis being more
horizontal and the cabin having an enhanced
cockpit feel, especially with the large central
tunnel and the elaborate control adornment
on it. In the bargain, the platform has seen
some changes to lower the hip point, adding
to the sports car feel as well as lending some
extra headroom.
The Macan gets three engines at launch,
which set it out as a world car for the brand.
The smaller two engines are 3.0-litre V6
units, one petrol and the other diesel, while
the halo car will have the 3.6-litre biturbo
unit. Now the Turbo classification for the top
spec car is a bit confusing since the entry S
variant also is turbo powered but all you need
to do is think of it only as a badge for the
performance variant. At some stage in the

36

future there will no doubt be a GTS too.

As part of the technology sessions we were
taken through the engine development, use
of a hang-on arrangement for the four-wheel
drive system and the changes that set the car
apart from the regular MLB SUV.
Admittedly, being on a track and not
getting an opportunity to drive the car was
frustrating, but the trainer instructors took
us around a mildly demanding off-road track
and a small twisty road track from the ADAC
course. First impressions of the car as a
passenger border on the sublime. The offroad track isnt too demanding and doesnt
have sand. But the diesel unit that was doing
the off-road bit wasnt even trying and with
the ability of the air suspension to rise 40mm
on one touch of the 4WD button, there really
isnt so much thinking. The hang-on AWD is
taken off from the Carrera 4 and can handle
a torque of up to 900Nm. The car also gets

a version of terrain response so that torque

delivery to individual wheels is controlled by
the response.
Air suspension also allows the car to lower
from Normal ride height by 10mm (at speeds)
and also offers the ability to lower only the tail
to afford a better load height.
In all cars the gearbox is the 7-speed PDK
unit and the car also gets the optional sports
differential that comes complete with a diff
lock and the ability to dole out Porsche Torque
Vectoring Plus (not the regular PTV).
On the road track, the immediate takeaway
was the almost complete lack of roll in the
Turbo variant. We dont expect the mechanical
spring equipped unit to be as rock steady, but
then we think that almost all buyers would
take the air suspension and gain the handling
advantage. Although, knowing the Porsche
strategy, we would expect steel springs

Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus (PTV

Plus)
The Porsche Torque Vectoring Plus (PTV
Plus) system has been specially tailored
to the Macan in order to improve driving
dynamics and driving stability. The PTV Plus
uses a variable standard torque split at the
rear wheels combined with an electronically
controlled rear-axle differential lock. In
response to the steering angle, steering
speed, accelerator pedal position, yaw rate
and vehicle speed, the PTV Plus improves
steering behaviour and steering precision
through targeted brake interventions on
the inside rear wheel to enhance agility.
This gives the outside rear wheel a greater
propulsion force and enables an additional
turning impulse in the steered direction.
The result is direct and dynamic steering

into the bend. PTV Plus improves agility

and steering precision at low to moderate
vehicle speeds. The system also offers
enhanced vehicle stability at high speeds,
when cornering at speed and in case of
spinning wheels. In combination with Porsche
Traction Management (PTM) and Porsche
Stability Management (PSM) systems, PTV
Plus ultimately provides improved traction on
different road surfaces, and for wet and snow
conditions, thanks to the rear-axle differential
lock. The same applies when accelerating
out of bends, moving off and on roads with
different friction coefficients on the left and
right, for instance. The PTV Plus also makes
a positive impact when the Macan is taken
off-road: On loose ground, rear wheel spin is
reduced through targeted locking and braking
interventions.

with Porsche active suspension management to be as much in

demand, for its reliability and performance.
Another surprise was in the choice of wheels. Wheel sizes
begin at 18in and go all the way up to 21in, but the front and
rear axles get different wheel sizes. This means that the car is
usually supplied without a spare or with only a space saver.
In most ways the car seems to keep it technologically relevant.
Lets not even look at the cabin, where the sports car ambience,
decent legroom and comforts make for a surefire winner. The
Macan looks like a Cayman on steroids and will easily make a
name for itself on the roads of the world - and Porsche are
banking on this with a new extension to their Leipzig plant that
is designed to produce 50,000 units a year when the car hits full
production in 2015. Compare that with 2002 when the entire
production of Porsche was in that range and you can see where
the brand has come now. By the time the whole world is buying
the Macan, Porsche would be hitting the quarter of a million
mark, making itself the new champion of the sports car world.

2014 Honda City

City slick

There are very few city cars in Asia which

have a fan following like the Honda City.
Honda was among the first few to launch
a sedan in emerging markets like India,
way back in 1998 with the first generation
Honda City. The fourth generation model
has just been launched in Asia and
Automan checks out the new model during
its India launch
Author and photography: Faisal Khan

ince 1998, Hondas C-segment City

has become a perennial favourite
in the hotly-contested segment in
many Asian countries and in some
pockets in the Middle East. Quite
popular as an entry level sedan, particularly
in high fuel cost markets like India the model
began losing steam to its rivals which had
the diesel technology advantage. For the
record, Honda has been selling the City in 55
countries worldwide and 2.2mn units have
been sold already.
Honda revived the City nameplate in
1996 for the Asian market with the first

40

generation model being based on the Civic.

The first Honda City was launched in 1981
and technically the City model is now in its
sixth generation. However, since the first two
generation models were hatchbacks, the City
sedan is therefore considered to be in its
fourth generation now.
Things started moving aggressively at
Honda, by the time the City entered its third
generation. Honda particularly looked at
styling and efficient powertrains and began
to package the car in line with global trends.
Gen III sported a new revolutionary design

language which also set the tone for its

successor and this is evident in the incoming
fourth generation which has further evolved.
At first glance, to the uninitiated, the new
City will pass off as the old car and thats
because both the third and fourth generation
models have very similar dimensions and
profile. The new City [code: 2CT] is built
on the same platform as the upcoming
new-generation Jazz. It has a length of
4,440mm [same as the outgoing City], but
the wheelbase is 50mm more at 2,600mm,
height stands at 10mm more at 1,495mm

and width at 1,695mm. The new City carries

Hondas new Exciting H-Design language
which will soon feature on their other models
as well. The highlight up front is the new
headlights and grille while the side reveals
the chunkier curves and the clear cut sheet
metal panels. The rear is where the new City
is vastly different from its predecessor where
it gets wider BMW inspired horizontal tail
lights. Meanwhile, the new car boasts a 24
per cent improvement in structural rigidity as
compared to the old car.
The cabin of the car is where Honda
designers have paid meticulous attention
and as a result, the interiors is a genuine
revolution in terms both form and function.
The dashboard uses a Jazz-influenced layered
floating cockpit design. The all black dash
gets silver accents and piano black treatment
in the form of gloss finish which looks very
premium. The instrument cluster is clean and
easy to read and the motorcycle-styled three
pods get chrome bezels.
While, the old City lacked features, the
new City reverses that trend. It gets a host
of contemporary features like keyless entry,
leather seats, sunroof, reverse camera,

climate control with touch panel, button

start, electrically retracting rear view
mirrors, auto-locking doors, cruise control
and even leather seats. Central console is
tilted towards the driver and the steering
wheel has ergonomically placed buttons
for various functions. There are plenty of
storage spaces inside the cabin besides four
12v power outlets. The car also gets 5in TFT
touchscreen infotainment system and touch
air-conditioning controls. Connectivity options
including AUX, USB, iPod and Bluetooth) and
the screen also serves as a reverse camera
display. Build, materials and fitment are good,
but a bit short of the standards practiced in
Europe.
But the biggest improvement in the cabin,
which comes as a direct benefit of the
extended wheelbase is space management.
Shoulder room has increased by 40 mm while
knee room and legroom see an increment of
70mm and 60mm respectively. Honda claims
the space at the rear is in the same league
as cars two classes above. Boot space has
increased marginally and the loading area has
been widened.
Depending on markets, the new Honda City
will come with several engine options. The

1.5-litre diesel is Hondas new made-for-India

engine, the same as seen on the Amaze, but
is more fuel efficient and refined, while the
1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol i-VTEC mill has
also been retuned for better fuel efficiency
and modest increase of 1hp. Honda continues
to offer an automatic gearbox with the petrol
City but the automatic transmissions have
been replaced with a 7-step CVT unit which
Honda claims to offer higher efficiency than
even the manual version. The big news
under the bonnet for the City is that Honda
has finally shoehorned a turbocharged diesel
engine, which is the same motor as used in
the Amaze.
Supporting
the
ride,
theres
new
MacPherson struts for the front suspension,
while the rear gets an H-shape twist-beam
suspension with stabilizer and coil spring.
Honda also claims that the brakes have been
reworked to offer better pedal feel. In India,
E, S, SV, V and VX are the five variants of
the City. ABS has been included as a standard
on all diesel versions and the car rides on
15in wheels shod with 175/65R15 tyres.
In constructing the car, Honda has used
the G-CON structure design with creates
protective shell around the passengers thus

reducing the impact of a crash. Key safety

features include dual front SRS air-bags,
active headrests to prevent whiplash injuries
for the front passenger and driver, with the
usual combination of ABS (Antilock Brake
System) and EBD (Electronic Brakeforce
Distribution). Brakes are a combination of
discs up front and drums at rear. The discs
are bigger now to help improve performance.

Driving impressions
Common to both variants for the driver
and occupants is that all round visibility is
excellent. Thanks to the resized headrests at
rear, the rear view is much better than before.

42

www.automanweb.com

jan 2014

The diesel engine performs well, pulling

strongly right from the word GO. Turbolag
is well contained and the oil burner gives
linear performance to the City. The motor
isnt as free revving as you would expect a
Honda powerplant to be and redline comes at
4,100rpm. This i-DTEC mill isnt good when
it comes to noise and in spite of improving
the NVH characteristics of the car. While
the clutch is light, the 6-speed gearbox isnt
nearly as smooth as the 5-speed unit on the
Amaze.
The throttle response is instant and the
petrol Honda City lunges forward instantly on

every bit of throttle input. Power delivery is

smooth and there is good low-end grunt for
city driving. The motor doesnt have a very
strong mid-range but the top end grunt more
than makes up for it. Whizz past 4,000rpm
and the City comes in its own pulling strongly
to its 7,000rpm with a loud sporty rasp.
Gearing is on the taller side with 100km/hr
coming up in second gear itself. The 5-speed
manual gearbox is smooth shifting and the
clutch is light. Honda did not see a need for
adding a 6-speed gearbox to the City as the
addition of the CVT option has already led to
improved efficiency. The motor doesnt rev
more than 4,500rpm in neutral and there is

no speed limiter on the City like its on the

Brio and Amaze and thus you can comfortably
cruise at high speeds. 100km/hr in top gear
keeps the rpm needle ticking at 3,000rpm.
Like most Hondas, the suspension is set a
bit on the stiffer side, more attuned for the
heavier diesel model. While, the petrol variant
rides better, the ride overall is compliant on
smooth asphalt, only to be unsettled on
broken patches. High speed stability is good
and occupants dont realise the speed of the
car. Tyres and wind noise is contained to some
extent due to improved NVH management,
but both the diesel and petrol engines are
quite audible at high revs. The steering is

light at low speeds and only decently weighed

at high speeds lacking feedback you would
expect from a very potent drivers car. Turning
radius is short making city driving and parking
a breeze. . The CVT box can be noisy at times,
but the paddle shifters on the steering wheel
and the option of choosing Sport mode livens
up things. The CVT model also gets Hill Hold
function and like most higher Honda cars, all
City variants come with ambient meter rings
which are blue in regular driving and turn
green when you drive efficiently.

Verdict

Japanese brand. Not only is the City an

important car for the manufacturer, its also
important for other C-segment companies as
the vehicle always sets a new benchmark in
the segment thereby indirectly dictating the
next move of Hondas competitors. Honda
knows customers have high expectations from
the City as the vehicle is an achievers car
and the company wants to deliver more than
what people ask for. Have they succeeded?
Yes, in spades. The new City builds on the
good points of the old car and offers good
balance of features, styling, performance and
efficiency.

Hondas approach towards the City clearly

reveals the importance of the car for the

ords luxury brand Lincoln has been

in the process of redefining itself as
a luxury player and the effort goes
beyond design and engineering.
The MKZ sedan is an important
model in the current line-up and in fact, the
MKZ was the first of the MK-series of Lincoln
luxury vehicles, which has since been followed
by the MKX crossover, MKS full-size sedan
and MKT full-size crossover. Since 2008, the
MKZ has been Lincolns best-selling vehicle
in the US domestic market and the all-new
second generation MKZ, which is essentially
an enlarged variant of the international Ford
Mondeo/Fusion platform went on sale in early
2013. This new arrival has been recently
introduced in the Middle East.
With the 2014 Lincoln MKZ, the brand is
keen to reclaim some of its former Detroit
glory which it enjoyed till the imported brands
from Asia and Europe came in and dominated
the segment. And the journey begins with new
design language and profile. While, the MKZ

Ford is slowly but

surely attempting
to revitalize the
luxury Lincoln brand,
with the new MKZ
sedan pointing the
way forward for the
Blue Ovals premium
division
is mechanically related to the Ford Fusion,
but at least on the outside, theres plenty of
differentiation between the two cars. Most

noticeable about Lincolns MKZ is its fresh

and distinctive coupe like exterior styling and
the split winged grille and Europe-inspired
waistline. But its the sweeping roofline that
actually defines the cars smart profile which
is supported by a steeply raked windscreen
and horizontal tail lamp stretching end to end.
Its not just looks, besides being sleeker
and more flowing, the car is 10 per cent
more slippery when it comes to aerodynamic
profiling when compared to the outgoing
model. What is nice in the design and profile
that although it is strikingly modern, the
classic Lincoln design DNA and key elements
like the refined interpretation of the split-wing
grille, first seen on the 1938 Lincoln-Zephyr
are retained almost faithfully. The car features
flush fit headlamp assemblies which include
bright, energy-efficient LED technologies.
The front headlights also turn in sync with
the steering wheel and at the rear too, LED
technology rules full-width literally.

Instead, theres a five-button interface,

very similar to what you find in an Aston
Martin these days. The individual buttons
of Push Button Shift engage Park, Neutral,
Reverse, and forward gears in two modes,
Drive and Sport. Meanwhile, this arrangement
has given interior designers more freedom to
create functional storage areas in the elegant
central console.
From the trim perspective, theres premiumgrade, supple leather covers all seats and
responsibly harvested real wood and metaltoned surfaces complement each other and
create a luxurious and comfortable interior
environment. The car offers quite good head,

leg and shoulder room. Another signature

feature not to be missed in this car is the
retractable panoramic roof. The 15.2-squarefoot glass panel offers one of the largest
openings available on any current sedan.
In terms of technology application inside
the cabin theres oodles of gadgetry positioned
ahead of the driver. Theres a large full-colour
10.1in LCD instrument cluster operates with
the latest version of SYNC with MyLincoln

MyLincoln Touch is the 8in LCD touch screen
that displays information.
As an entry level luxury model that has

moved up, standard luxury features include

and cabin air filtration, power drivers seat
featuring 10-way power controls and remote
start capabilities. Active Noise Control is
among new technologies that have been
incorporated to ensure the car is whisper
quiet on the move.
Lincoln claims that the MKZ is the only
sedan in its class to offer inflatable secondrow outboard seat belts. These outboard
seat belts spread impact forces across more
than five times the area of conventional belts,
reducing pressure on the chest while helping
to control head and neck motion and helping
reduce the risk of injuries.

We found SYNC with MyLincoln Touch
as a neat combined system that makes it
easier to use most of the entertainment,

Driving impressions

It takes a little while to get used to the

absence of a gear shifter. Unlike in the Aston
Martin which uses a robotic gearbox where
the in-between shifts can be noisy and jerky,
the gear shifts in the MKZ are ultra smooth.

The car is certainly very quiet on the move

and the ride and handling are on par with
similar premium luxury models, like the Lexus
ES, part in thanks to Lincoln Drive Control,
an intelligent system designed to deliver a
well-balanced driving experience. The engine
is quite responsive to general duties and
doesnt feel stressed when pushed. Steering
feel and feedback is neutral and overall, when
compared with the new Cadillac CTS, which
is a far more engaging drivers car, the MKZ
feels quite sedate and relaxed.
While the push button gears are
entertaining, unlike some driver-selectable
Sport modes, the Lincoln Drive Control
actually produces noticeable changes in the
cars performance and ride. In every mode,
we note that the chassis motions are well
controlled, which is surprising as one would
have expected of a car which has so much
influence from a Fusion. Our test car rode
tolerably with the suspension set to Comfort,
yet with Sport mode selected, changes are
felt, but the car doesnt get aggressive. The

brakes have adequate power to stop the car

from 110km/h in 169feet, which is better
braking than that of a BMW 528i or Lexus
GS350.

Verdict

The 2013 MKZ is a much more thorough

rework of the Fusion architecture now.
Overall, the 2014 MKZ should be considered
less of an enthusiasts car, but more as an
all-rounder. This is because the MKZ is not
designed or packaged to sit in the same
performance tier as the Cadillac CTS, BMW 3
Series or Mercedes-Benz C-Class. We wouldnt
recommend it as a luxury sport sedan choice,
but would see it as a standalone car which
is stylish, feature loaded, comfortable to ride
in and easy to live with. The new MKZ is the
most refined and engaging MKZ ever.

Handling isnt too aggressive

and the new MKZs chassis
is set-up for several driving
modes. Its on the borderline
of sports sedans

Designing
a new direction

We met Infinitis new designer Simon

Cox on the sidelines of the Dubai
motorshow. He gives Automan an
interesting perspective of what it takes
to design products at a time of change
for the luxury brand.
Interviewer: Raj Warrior

RW: Its a pleasure to meet you Simon.

Coming from a background of designing
for American marques, how different do
you find the task that you now have in
bringing out future Infinitis at this time
of their growth surge?
SC: For us at Infiniti it is now much more than
a one size fits everything approach. We have
challenges. We have established players to
contend with we have BMW, Audi , Mercedes
and they all offer something to the buyer, in
some ways similar things, but for me the key
to succeed is that we have to be as good as
them and in some areas better than them,
but also we have to somethings different.
RW: At the same time, as a brand you are
reinventing yourself in terms of where
you are positioning your sedans and
SUVs, with a link to performance now,
what with the connection to Infiniti
Redbull racing. How does that influence

50

www.automanweb.com

jan 2014

the paradigm as a designer?

SC: I think what we need to do is to develop
products that really say what Infiniti is not
just making it Infinitis version of the 3-series
or Q7 or the like. This is what an Infiniti
product is about, and thats why it is the size
it is, thats why it has the proportions it has,
thats what dictates it stance and thats why
if you want something different and want
something tailored to performance then you
should come to Infiniti. There are other brands
that do that on a different scale, youve got
Porsche now coming down in the SUV market
with the Macan for example, so there are
areas in the market where Infiniti products
answer specific needs that havent been
addressed. We dont have to hit a 3-series
or A4 customer with something slightly
different. We should be able to say that our
car is very different and some of our products
that are in, what I would call, conservative
bandwidths, should move out. Why should we

match competition step by step through these

bandwidths and why should we need to?
The German brands have obviously been at it
a long time and have kind of written the rule
book on it. But I think we need to change the
rulebook.
RW: In a sense, by this approach, you
will be bringing a little bit of chaos to
the luxury market.
SC: Thats what we mean by being
provocative. We have obviously got to design
provocative looking vehicles, but thats not
just about style and styling its about getting
the fundamentals right. The proportion, the
stance, the handling, all of those are things
weve got to do right.
RW: At the same time, you find yourself
at a point in time where technology is
moving at its fastest, especially in terms

SC: Yes, given the tools the world is our

Oyster. You look at a car like the BMW i8 and
its completely in a different class. I mean the
i8 was the first time in a very long time that
I have gone, now thats something really
special. Not just because of its carbon-fibre
monocoque because those have been around
for sometime, but you can see that theyve
got the technology, theyve got the materials,
and have really thought about the product
and designed it as a product, not just put
out a nice body on normal underpinnings. To
be honest, that vehicle didnt have to be the
way it is but it was heartwarming for me that
they have gone that extra step. They have
really shown that they have passion about
wanting the best.
RW: The premium luxury space is
getting increasingly crowded with the
brands that want to be there.
SC: It is. You have got a Hyundai down there
(in the exhibition hall - Ed) showing this car.
The premium market is special in that it is
very difficult to set the boundaries of what
is premium. I think we know what luxury is
and Infiniti yeah we are in the premium
market. Premium values are different. Again
its not one rule for everybody. You expect
a certain standard of precision and build
quality and all those sort of things and then
the strength of the brand is really important
and thats where we have a lot of work to
do. But I wouldnt be here if I didnt think
that would be possible. In 1998 I started
at Cadillac when the brand had nothing,
no products you would want to be seen in,
but that was a brand that was almost a 100
years old even then. So in a way, it doesnt
matter how old the brand is its about
how you use your heritage. We have a very
young heritage so you have to use that in
a very positive way. Weve been around for
25 years but we know that we have to push
on develop for the next generation , get

RW: However, one cant put aside the

baggage that Infiniti has carried over
the years of being seen as a Nissanplus. What are you bringing in to make
that a thing of the past?

should be there. And we have this internal

kind of argument about the positioning of
the FX. Personally, I like the FX where it is
I dont need a huge amount of space and
this is where if you compromise too much
and try to do too many things then a product
becomes kind of average. We have to focus
on what is important in that segment. For
the FX it is never going to be a seven-seater.
Can we make interior space a little better?
We could and I think we can do that without
destroying the sportiness or unique flavour.
And again for me thats where each product
needs to be tailored for ourselves and if you
want mainstream then there are plenty of
mainstream people out there. We dont want
to be mainstream.

SC: I think a lot of it comes down to generating

our own technology and platforms, not just
taking a Nissan platform and rebodying it.
That is something we are definitely going to
develop in the future, deciding what is the
right proportion, what is the right platform
for us. Were also sharing platforms with
Mercedes and you could argue that isnt a
bad player to be associated with I think
once we build the awareness of what Infiniti
is about now, yes, we are part of Nissan and
that has its strengths but obviously you have
got to be careful of how people perceive you.
When people look at Lexus, do they think
Toyota? Some do, some dont. Its all about,
again, building the awareness, making people
understand. I have been driving my own
Infiniti that I bought while I was working on
the Emerg-E, before I actually joined Infiniti.
I bought an FX and Ive been driving it in the
UK and you dont see many there. Everybody
loves the vehicle, its always turning heads
and that for me shows that if we get more
products like that thats going to be a plus.

Infiniti appointed Simon

Cox as Design Director,
Infiniti Design London
studio last year. In this
role, Cox operates from
the new bespoke Infiniti
design studio in London,
which also opened in
October 2013.

RW: Well there is nothing like that

in the Nissan stable. Its extremely
distinct.
SC: Thats where we have to focus our
products to not just overlap Nissan or even to
overlap our competitors. Why are we putting
a vehicle here? Because we believe that it

a younger buyer, not be totally focussed on

the middle-aged American buyer. There is a
lot of room for movement and as I dont say
that what I did for Cadillac was all down to
me, but the similarities I joined a brand
that didnt have a great product, that needed
to reinvent itself and it takes time. I think
sales for Cadillac have really developed and
we can definitely do the same for Infiniti in a
more niche or smaller way. Its quite a nice
position to be in, to be almost like a smaller
player.

was taken over by BMW Group, the RollsRoyce Phantom nameplate has flourished
over the years with the addition of several
variants -- sedan, the extended wheelbase

Middle East is among the strongest markets for this
model with Abu Dhabi taking the lead.
The entire Phantom line-up has been refreshed
in 2013 and is now marketed as Phantom II. At

The lighting package also includes
adaptive headlamps, where light patterns change
automatically and - of course - effortlessly in
response to different driving speeds. Interestingly,
to the keen eye, the coachwork has received subtle
changes, which soften the lines without drastically
altering the overall appearance.

and less perceptible when it shifts gears and
since the torque curve remains largely flat

for effortless city driving. Despite its size and

what impresses us is that the body is very

olls-Royce Motor Cars set new

standards in customisation of cars
when the luxury British automotive
manufacturer launched its Bespoke
programme. The programmes humble
beginnings, over a century ago, took shape
when Rolls-Royce delivered its cars as an
engine; chassis and Pantheon Grille. In
those days, a coachbuilder association
was the bespoke experience provided by
the marque to its clients to order their one
of a kind motor car. Today, Bespoke is one
of the pillars of Rolls-Royce Motor Cars.
Over the years, Rolls-Royces Bespoke
programme has extended to include a
myriad range of services that allow owners
to truly individualise their cars. This includes
anything from application of unique shades
of paint, coach lines and tread plates to
accessories that complement the car.
Geoffrey Briscoe, Regional Director,
Rolls-Royce Motors Cars Middle East, Africa
and Latin America explains the Bespoke
experience thus: Rolls-Royce works in
harmony with the customers personality.
Our mission is to cultivate a personal
relationship between the owner and the
brand, its ambassadors, dealers, designers
and craftspeople. Customers benefit from
unrivalled possibilities to celebrate their
uniqueness and individuality within a
framework that maintains the integrity of
the brand. In this region, almost every car
delivered to a customer has a Bespoke
element, showcasing the importance
of individuality to the Middle Eastern
customer.
The term Bespoke was initially used
in the world tailoring, particularly among
craftsmen on Savile Row, United Kingdom.
While the term has gone on to include
various other streams, the concept
remains true to its meaning. Whether it
is used in the context of tailoring a suit

Rolls-Royce Motor Cars took their famous tagline

Bespoke is Rolls-Royce to a new level with
the unveiling of the Celestial Phantom at the
recent Dubai International Motor Show. The
most valuable Rolls-Royce in the history of the
company, the Celestial Phantom bedazzles with
diamonds meticulously placed into the doorcappings, centre console lid and rear-privacy
divider.
The Celestial Phantom is a special one-off edition
that was first unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor
Show in September. It was designed to celebrate
the anniversary of the very first Phantom delivery,
which took place at midnight on January 1, 2003.
Rolls-Royce created a midnight theme with a
glass-particle exterior paint representing the
colour of the night sky.
Inside, a Starlight Headliner features more than a
thousand fiber optic lights, replicating the look of
the constellations on that very night. The nightsky constellation arrangement was verified by the
South Downs Planetarium to ensure authenticity,
whilst hand-stitching to the headliner subtly maps
out the constellations.
For the Dubai Motor Show, Rolls-Royce added
a detail not seen in Frankfurt. The Celestial
Phantom was upgraded with 446 diamonds, all
hand-set into the door-cappings, center console
lid and rear divider.
The exterior colour scheme evokes the night sky
integrating fine glass particles into the paint to
achieve an alluring sense of depth and light. The
theme continues when one opens the coach doors
of this very special Phantom Extended Wheelbase.
Inside the Celestial Phantom, the leather used
is in a Dusk hue that is reminiscent to the
inky quality of a cloudless night sky. Bespoke
glassware and an exquisitely appointed picnic set
are also included in this beautifully crafted luxury

concept of Bespoke remains constant
that there is a specific type of clientele
that demand exclusivity and compatibility
from their possessions, so that they are
an extension of their personality, or the
perfect fit, both in the physical sense
and the emotional sense, says Briscoe.
Bespoke is a much sought after feature
among Rolls-Royce customers. So what
makes it so popular? Our clientele are
not motivated by the desire to purchase
a Rolls-Royce for the mere purpose
of travel. A Rolls-Royce represents a
milestone acquisition on the part of its
owner as a signal of success. In that
context, the acquisition will have to be
a true reflection of its owners unique
personality, and only a programme as
thorough, creative and historic as RollsRoyces Bespoke can bring the required
statement that the owner wishes to
convey.
Over the years many meticulously
and unique made to order hand crafted
Rolls-Royce motor cars have rolled out

are the Phantom and Phantom Coup
Ghawwas Duo, themed on the legacy of
pearl divers in the Gulf, and the Phantom
Coup Chicane with a theme inspired by
the classic races that took place at the
Goodwood Circuit near the Home of
Rolls-Royce in West Sussex, England.
Briscoe adds, Bespoke also works
on collections of cars that are designed
under a unified theme, but still not
identical such as the region-specific 1001
Nights Bespoke Ghost Collection inspired
by the epic tales of Arabian Nights or the
Home of Rolls-Royce Bespoke Collection
which was created to celebrate ten years
of excellence at the new home of RollsRoyce in Goodwood.

ts no secret that the pony car battles

have been in vogue for more than
four decades now. And in North
America and some other markets it
essentially boils down to a Chevrolet
Camaro vs Ford Mustang fight. Over the
years, the two models have remained popular
with enthusiasts even during the global oil
embargoes and various market downturns.
The Mustang has been a permanent model in
Fords lineup, receiving many redesigns that
the new 2015 model is considered as the 10th
generation model. While, the Chevys Camaro
is in its fifth generation and was around even
when the Mustang was temporarily out of
circulation for a couple of years [2002-2010],
renewed competition since 2010 has made
the rivalry more intense than ever between
the brands and their respective models.
Currently, it seems that the Camaro [and its
variants] have an upper hand in this epic ongoing battle and General Motors is in no mood
to give up its Camaro advantage so easily.
So taking engineering lessons from track it

has translated some of that experience into

the SS variant which like its siblings has also
received a fresh cosmetic upgrade. While, the
car is packaged for enthusiasts with focused
attributes, revised engineering has addressed
specific feedback from users.
From the exterior, the profile of the car
remains unchanged, but detailing in lights
and valance has been changed. The front
end features a wider lower opening, and a
narrower upper opening that also updates the
appearance of the halo ring HID headlamps.

up with a number of retro touches like square

bezels around the gauges, the overall effect
is stylish despite the use of a little too much
hard plastic. Outward visibility, though, is
hampered by thick roof pillars and a low roof
line. Inside the cabin is a nice faux-suede
quick-throw shifter from the ZL1 along with
a flat-bottom steering wheel trimmed in the
same material.

The bonnet vent on the SS is functional

and helps reduce heat and aerodynamic
lift. Moving to the rear, the sculptural boot
lid, horizontal lamps and diffuser complete
the powerful statement. And then the front
splitter and rear spoiler are unique to this
model.

The Camaros touchscreen display interface

features a clean layout and intuitive menu
structure. While, front seats are comfortable
enough, the Camaros rear seat is the smallest
among its rivals in the pony car class. For the
size of the car, the car is low on practicality.
For instance cargo space at the rear stands at
312litre and that space cant be expanded due
to the absence of fold-down rear seatbacks.
The small boot opening also makes loading
and unloading of larger items difficult.

Old-school pony cars werent known for

their snazzy interiors, but the current Camaros
make a clean break with that tradition. Done

Our Camaro SS came outfitted with a

lb-ft of torque with manual]. And even with this kit, theres a slight power
advantage over the closest Mustang. At 1,755kg, the Camaro outweighs it
by 110kg. In some markets Chevrolets performance pack is available which
costs more than the one in the Stang, but it also gives the buyer more
equipment. In addition, the SS gets Brembo brakes, 3.91 axle ratio, and
larger wheels from the ZL1 with assymetric tyres (10.0x20 front and 11.0x20
rear, wrapped in 285/35ZR20 rubber. For more fun handling, the suspension
has also been tweaked. There are uprated front and rear anti-roll bars, a
front strut tower brace, toe links and rear shock absorber mounts. Every

2014 Chevy Camaro comes standard with

antilock disc brakes, traction and stability
control, front-seat side airbags and full-length
side curtain airbags.

Driving impressions
We are aware that theres limited practicality
in a muscle car, but thats not what the Camaro
SS is all about. With the existing 400hp SS, the
Camaro certainly is never short on tyre-frying
power. The V8 is responsive and revs freely,
and the exhaust note is pleasingly sporty
and befits the Camaros tough guy persona.
We reacquainted ourselves with the engines
sweet spot which is above 3500rpm, when
the baffles open allowing the thunderous V8
we always lust for. The power curve from this
small block engine is incredibly smooth for a
muscle car. Theres no clawback as the revs
climb, just an ever-growing roar and steadily
increasing thrust all the way to its 6,700rpm
redline.
However, we would suggest any driver
of this car to get acquainted with this cars
packaging first quite well before engaging in
to power tactics. This is because some may
find it overwhelming as its not the easiest car

The Camaro SS is
easier to drive
very fast. It offers
loads of traction
and dead-on
balance and only
a sloppy driver
can upset its
chassis
to see out of, and theres a lot of weight to
manage when you throw the car about. And
thats when the talented suspension comes
into play with a focused and precise attitude.

Driven around fast corners the Camaro grips

hard and steers with precision of a bullet.
What we particularly liked about this car that
theres an element of predictability in the
way the suspension responds to whatever
is thrown at it. Its even more impressive
considering the weight the car has to carry.
Rarely do we find a car with so much power
behave so benignly. As confidence grew
between man and machine, we kept going
faster, waiting for the time when it finally let
loose, but it never did. Its like theres just
enough suppleness to let the wheels absorb
the bumps, but not so much that the body
moves excessively.

Verdict
Its hard to argue with the Camaros
performance, style or refinement. As a
pony car, it is definitely wears the suit of
refinement. In fact, we felt sometimes the
Camaro SS was almost too polished. Its
abilities and confidence-inspiring nature are
very impressive and once again the package
lifts the benchmark in the segment.

or over half a century the Mustang has been entertaining aficionados in the US and some other
markets including the Middle East. Originally conceived and produced in early 60s as a sporty variation
based on the then platform of the second generation North American Ford Falcon, a compact car,
the Mustangs popularity over the years has grown many fold. In fact, the Mustang created the pony car
class of American automobiles, which were sports car-like coupes with long bonnets and short boots. Its
commercial success also encouraged the other Detroit brands to come up with their versions of the pony
car -- the Chevrolet Camaro, Pontiac Firebird, AMC Javelin, Chryslers revamped Plymouth Barracuda and
the first generation Dodge Challenger are some of the familiar names.
In the interim period, while some brands faded away, the Mustang grew from strength to strength each
generation. However, the last decade has seen quite a few changes in trends, corporate philosophies
and technology applications and these have had some effect on how the respective model series have
progressed or succeeded. Now, it seems that Ford has factored in all possibilities and therefore created an
all-new car from ground-up incorporating latest in design and engineering to represent the successor of
the outgoing model. With global aspirations in mind, Ford simultaneously unveiled the car on December
5, 2013, in Dearborn, New York, Los Angeles, Barcelona, Shanghai and Sydney.
The clean-sheet design of both fastback and convertible versions suggests the essential character of the
brand havent been abandoned and hence key design elements like the long sculpted hood and short
rear boot profile have been retained. Changes are in dimensions and include widened body by 1.5in, 1.4 in
lowered body and a 2.75in lower boot lid. There are subtle hints of the return of the popular fastback with
a sleeker profile enabled by more steeply sloped windscreen and rear glass treatments. Contemporary
execution of face and rear end includes the signature shark-bite front fascia and trapezoidal grille and LED
lamps respectively.
Powering the top end GT is the upgraded 5.0-litre V8, now featuring an improved valvetrain and cylinder
heads that yield more than 420hp and 529Nm of torque. A new intake manifold improves low-speed
breathing for better fuel economy, idle stability and emissions. Meanwhile, the upgraded V6 and V8 are
joined by an all-new 2.3-liter EcoBoost engine that brings state-of-the-art technology to Mustang.
For on-road performance and handling, experience gained with the Boss 302 edition development has
been carried over and as a result the incoming Mustang gets all-new front and rear suspension set-up.
At the rear is an all-new integral-link independent rear suspension. The geometry, springs, dampers and
bushings all have been specifically modified and tuned for this high-performance application. Besides
these, up front, a new perimeter subframe helps to stiffen the structure while reducing mass, providing a
better foundation for more predictable wheel control that benefits handling, steering and ride. The new
double-ball-joint front MacPherson strut system also enables the use of larger, more powerful brakes.
Three different brake packages will also be offered. The 2015 model year Mustang will begin production
in fall of 2014.

design and a host of technical innovations as well as a comprehensive scope
of standard equipment and exemplary emission and fuel consumption values.
Major changes are in the dimensions and introduction of lightweight
construction. With an 80mm increase in the wheelbase (now at 2,840mm)
compared with the previous model, the incoming car is 95mm longer at
4,686mm and 40 mm wider at 1,810mm. The resultant additional space
benefits first and foremost the rear passengers, who now travel in even
greater comfort. At 480 litres, the new C-Class outstrips its predecessor in
terms of boot capacity,
With the application of lightweight design concept, weight savings of up to
100kg have been achieved. Meanwhile, excellent aerodynamics and new,
economical engines, the C-Class establishes new benchmarks in its class. A
host of new assistance systems offer safety of the highest standard, while a
new suspension, optionally air-sprung, provides for exemplary ride and driving
comfort as well as nimble and agile handling. In terms of appearance the new
C-Class adopts a progressive approach with its clear yet emotional design and
its high-class interior. Many other innovations and interior touches underscore
the saloons energising comfort and refined sportiness. In all, the perceived
quality of the new CClass should feel like an upgrade to a higher class of

CR-V sibling, the Vezel is about nine inches shorter, one inch narrower and an inch lower. The
wheelbase is also about an inch shorter. However, it is seven inches longer than the current
Jazz hatchback.
Honda is promising a premium feel for the interior in terms of design, features and materials.
Hondas original centre-tank layout will feature in this model besides magic seats as well
as a large cargo space. Honda says that the cargo spaceof 453-litre is good enough for three
regular golf bags when the rear seats are in use.
Depending on market Honda will offer several powertrain options. For the domestic market,
the Vezel is offered with a petro and hybrid, both of which have the 1.5-litre petrol engine.
In the hybrid, theres a 22 kW electric motor and both versions get 7-speed dual-clutch
transmission. Interestingly, this hybrid variant will be the first among all Honda hybrid
models to be equipped with Hondas original Real Time All-Wheel-Drive (AWD), which
controls torque distribution to the front and rear wheels more precisely through electronic
control management. All Vezel variants feature advanced technologies and functions
normally associated with high-end models, such as an Electric Parking Brake and Automatic
Brake Hold, as standard equipment.
The Vezel will also reach the European and US markets in 2015 when it will have to face
competition from Nissan Juke, Renault Captur and Peugeot 2008 in particular. Details about
what will power spec versions of the Vezel have not been announced, but theres a good
chance that Honda will offer forced fed based powertrains, similar to what rivals like Mazda
and Nissan do.

amborghinis outgoing Gallardo has had an extremely successful career

and for a full decade remained virtually unchallenged. As a befitting
replacement, Lamborghini has a more powerful, more efficient, all-new
model called the Huracn to take its place. Like the Gallardo and most
other Lamborghini models, this incoming derives its name from the world
of bullfighting. The fighting bull Huracn of the Spanish Conte de la Patilla
breed was known for outstanding courage and strong sense of attack.
The Huracn revolutionizes the design DNA of the Gallardo and is pure in
its lines: precise technology and top level craftsmanship meet an audacious
design with sharp edges, monolithic and sculptured volumes and precise
surfaces. The cars headlamps are full LED and for all other light functions
theres state-of-the-art LED technology as standard feature for the first time
in the segment.
The cars interior gets an innovative cockpit and trimmed with features
suggesting luxury though out. Fine Nappa leather and Alcantara have been
generously used with several colour combination options. A strategically
placed 12.3in TFT instrument panel delivers all car information to the driver,
from rev counter to navigation maps and infotainment functions, and can

be configured by the driver in different setups. The design of dashboard and

central tunnel underline a new lightness in the interior.
Lamborghini has been promoting its expertise in carbon fibre and hybrid
construction lately and theres no exception of this application in the Huracn.
With the idea of optimizing power-to-weight, the chassis as expected is an
integrated complex structure of carbon and aluminium elements. With a dry
weight of 1,422 kg it enables the car to offer power-to-weight ratio of 2.33kg/
hp and also guarantees race-car precision with outstanding stiffness.
Thanks to the new Iniezione Diretta Stratificata (IDS), where direct
and indirect gasoline injection technology are combined, the new 5.2-litre
V10 engine now delivers a maximum output of 610hp at 8,250 rpm and a
maximum torque of 560Nm at 6,500 rpm. Top speed is over 325km/h and
the acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h comes in 3.2secs and to 200km/h in 9.9
secs. The engine is mated to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission set-up.
The Lamborghini Huracn will make its world public debut at the 2014 Geneva
Motor Show. The Huracn is being produced at the SantAgata Bolognese
facility on an entirely newly-equipped production line. Delivery to the first
customers is planned for spring 2014.

Sea-Doo Spark

fun on water

The all-new Sea-Doo Spark is the new word as the first affordable
personal watercraft for families in Oman

anada-based Bombardier Recreational Products (BRP) is represented by

Zubair Automotive Group LLC in the Sultanate and the lifestyle brand
recently introduced its new range of Sea-Doo watercraft under the
Spark tagline. The new product has been designed by BRP which takes into
account how these products have been used over the decades worldwide and
factors in trends and new opportunities. According to BRP, back in the late
1980s and early 1990s, the sales peak for these type of watercraft even
though the market was small. In the earlier days, watercrafts in the
market were nimble and weighed about half as much as the typical
s do today. Modern watercraft [also known as jet skis] sold
these days, are mostly about power. They are big, powerful
and comparatively very expensive. Thats great for lifestyle
companies offering touring or towing skiers but not for
ideal individuals on a budget aspiring to own one.
Naveen Sudhakaran, brand manager for BRP said, The
Sea-Doo Spark watercraft will make the dream of fun
on the water attainable for young families. With new
eye-catching colours, the Spark joins the industrys
best line-up, including the new Sea-Doo RXP X 260rs,
and to deliver fun, affordability, peace of mind. The SeaDoo Spark model costs up to 40 per cent less than its
closest competitive model and is the most fuel-efficient
watercraft in the industry.
And this is where BRPs Sea-Doo Spark range comes in. It is
a conveniently sized entry-level watercraft that aims to bring back
affordable fun in a lightweight and easy-to-tow package. To make that possible,
Sea-Doo developed a unique polypropylene-blend hull material thats strong,
light, and easy to manufacture. Under the seat is a new Rotax 900 ACE family
of three-cylinder engine that provides enough thrust to hit 64km/h, or nearly
80km/h in high-output models. Designed with an all-new Exoskel architecture
consisting of a lightweight durable Polytec material, it weighs about 180kg for
the two-seat version, the Spark is almost half the weight and price of most
other similar watercrafts. A three-seat version adds 10in in overall length
and comes with the high output engine only. The simple design also means
easy serviceability. The entire deck is bolted on, so removing a few fasteners

opens up full access to the powertrain. BRP says that the Spark is also fully
customizable with multiple configuration choices: 2up or 3up configurations,
choice of engine packages, with or without Convenience Package, in five
colour options, a
host of new accessories and 20
vibrant Attitude
Graphics
kits.

Need for

Speed
Not many luxury product makers can
boast having a true gentleman such as
Karl-Friedrich Scheufele at the helm. For
Scheufele, luxury is not a mere means to
a financial end but a way of life. Scheufele
co-owns Jewelry and watchmaking firm
called Chopard and was in Oman last month.

s there a connection with luxury products and an addiction to

classic car collection and vintage car racing? We think, there is
and those who wonder why Chopard is involved at all with motor
racing have clearly never met or indeed even heard of Chopards copresident and managing director of its watch division Karl-Friedrich
Scheufele.
Within a few minutes of settling in an interview with Scheufele, we
begin to empathise with the mans passion for classic and vintage cars
which eventually led to the companys sponsorship of the Mille Miglia
car rally in Italy, and the Grand Prix de Monaco Historique. In this role,

Scheufele successfully marries horology and a need for speed in the

Mille Miglia collection of sports watches and elements of the L.U.C
collection, in particular the Engine One.
In circles, Scheufele is also known for his collectors instinct and
preference for high quality objects. Over the years, he has patiently
built up his personal collection of mechanical clocks and watches
besides some interesting classic and vintage cars. Scheufele is a
regular participant in Mille Miglia and the prestigious Grand Prix de
Monaco Historique car rallies which the brand also sponsors.

A: I cant give you exact numbers, but it is

under 20.

Q: Why are events like Mille Miglia so

close to Chopard?

Q: Do you think that driving modern

cars isnt that challenging?

A: A luxury company like Chopard has a

certain responsibility to support cultural
events, be it the Cannes Film Festival or
the Mille Miglia, which represents almost a
hundred years of automobile history.

A: Since 1988.
Q: Usually, car collectors like
yourselves are paired with famous
drivers in these kind of events. Who
has been your co-driver?

A: In a modern car as you know everything

is electronically controlled which means
basically you cant go wrong. Of course
you eventually discover the beauty of

A: I like to race in the Mille Miglia

alongside with Jacky Ickx. I trust
Jacky as my co-driver and we
have a wonderful relationship on
track.

Q: How would you describe the

experience between a classic and a
modern car?
A: To be honest, I find driving modern cars
boring. Even a modern supercar doesnt
give me the same pleasure as driving a
pre-War (World War II) Bentley.
Q: What else?
A: I can sit with my mechanic and discuss
way to restore or fix a classic car. A
modern car doesnt allow such privileges.
In a modern car, theres not much you
can fix, its basically just replacing faulty
components. The engaging experience of
owning a classic car doesnt exist with a
modern car.
Q: How big is your personal classic
car collection?

Q: We read in an interview
that you wanted to name
the new L.U.C caliber after
the Porsche 911. Was it
just a number or it had
something to do with your
car collection?
A: The Porsche 911 GT3 was
just the internal code name for
our chronograph caliber. I dont
own this recently-launched car
unfortunately, but I do own the
911 RS model from 1973,
which was the equivalent of
the GT3 at the time.

Q: Coming back to cars, when

did you get interested in classic
cars?
A: Very early. I was 10 to 15 years
old and it was really a love for the
cars of my youth. My first car was a
Porsche 356 and from that moment
of owning it, I have been hooked on
to the pleasure of driving.

face to face

Q: When was the first time you

participated in the Mille Miglia car
rally and the prestigious Grand Prix
de Monaco Historique as a driver?

whats under
the hood, the way the car has been built...
In those days, they were less restricted.
There was no concern about safety,
emissions and, well, you name it. In fact,
the driver was really secondary. Even driver
comfort was not important. As a driver
you had to fit the car, not the other way
around.
Q: How would you describe the
relationship between mechanical
watches and classic cars?
A: Think about it this way. I can go to my
garage and start my 1929 Bentley with no
problems. Even if I had to replace parts,
I can manage somehow. You could say
that a mechanical watch is a survivor, or
a relic of the past that is out of place in
our electronic age. It demands a lot of
attention from the owner, as you have to
wind and adjust it. However, this is very
rewarding because you have a living object
that accompanies you for many years to
come.

Q: Can you give me an example of

how Chopard has proven its affinity
for translating the concept of speed
to its watch movements?
A: If you look at the L.U.C 01.06-L
caliber model, it beats at a frequency of
57,600 vph, or 8 Hz [high frequency]. The
standard frequency for todays watches is
28,000 vph. Why go higher? The faster the
balance, the greater the accuracy. This is
made possible by silicon a wear-resistant
material used for the lever, escapement
wheel and impulse pin of the L.U.C 8Hz,
which can withstand the pressure of high
frequency. To quote racing legend and
our brand ambassador Jacky Ickx: Its all
about speed, experience and technology;
thats the way to stay ahead of the others.
Q: Whats your favourite brand of car?
A: Porsches are my all-time favourite.

ROUTE ANNOUNCED FORTHE

1000 MILE TRIAL

he 1000 Mile Trial will take drivers

on an epic classic car rally across the
United Kingdom that will closely follow
the original route taken by daring motorists
in 1900.
A celebration of the event, which was first
run in 1900, is to be re-created from 12th to
19th July 2014 by the Royal Automobile Club
in partnership with the Historic Endurance
Rallying Organisation (HERO), and will be a
qualifying round of the 2014 HERO Cup, in
association with EFG International. The event
will also be included in the packed Year of
Homecoming celebrations in Scotland.
PatrickBurke, joint Managing Director of
HERO, said: We will follow the original route
as much as possible but in many places the

74

www.automanweb.com

jan 2014

roads used in 1900 either no longer exist or

are now major trunk roads.
He added: The event is to have up to four
regularities and two or three tests per day,
many on the original test areas and hill climbs,
and will also visit several stately homes and
venues. However, unlike the first run of the
1000 Mile Trial, the crews will start the event
and finish at Woodcote Park!
On 13th July 2014, eighty pre-1940 cars
will tackle the first test of this adventure
which will be the hill climb from the Royal
Automobile Clubs Woodcote Park clubhouse,
up the Clubs Captains Drive, towards Epsom
Downs.
Ben Cussons, Chairman of the Royal
Automobile Clubs Motoring Committee, said:

There is an air of excitement in anticipation

of seeing the cars head up the Captains Drive
from our Woodcote Park clubhouse to begin
the 1000 Mile Trial. It is a fitting venue from
which to start the Trial, which will closely
follow the route taken by the pioneering
motorists of 1900, and we are thrilled to be
hosting the start of that epic journey.
Gregor Fisken, Director of Fiskens, said We
at Fiskens are honored to be involved in our
own capacity with the celebration of the 1000
Mile Trial with our shared passion for the
greatest pre-war and pre-great war historic
automobiles, we fully support the chance that
this event represents for a growing number
of enthusiasts to enjoy using their cars. The
1000 Mile Trial represents a landmark; it is the

ultimate challenge for drivers and navigators

of the finest pre-war cars.
Crews will take on several tests and regularities
throughout the first day, one of which will
allow them to try to emulate Top Gears
famous character The Stig. Competitors will
finish the day at the Hilton Puckrup Hall in
Cheltenham.
Day two will startwith a series of tests before
some great driving roads take crews to a hill
climb and other stately homes including Arley
Hall & Gardens for a traditional afternoon tea.
Day three takes drivers from Preston to
Edinburgh on a busy route full of tests and
regularities. Crews will reach the most
northern point of the event in Edinburgh
before arriving on the quayside in Leith prior
to the centre piece dinner aboard the Royal
Yacht Britannia.
Britannia is a floating palace, home to Her
Majesty The Queen and the Royal Family,
and roving ambassador for Great Britain for
over forty years. The Royal Yacht played
host to kings and queens, prime ministers
and presidents, sailing over 1,000,000 miles
around the world.
AndrewThomson, Head of Hospitality and
Events at The Royal Yacht Britannia, said:
The 1000 Mile Trial is a once in a lifetime

opportunity for Britannia. We wanted to create

a very special evening to mark the occasion.
The evening will be a truly splendid affair for
guests and we are sure they will enjoy their
special dinner aboard the Royal Yacht.
Caroline Packman, Director of Homecoming
Scotland 2014 said: 2014 promises to be a
very exciting year for Scotland where we can
celebrate all thats great about our country
and place the spotlight on our greatest assets.
We are delighted to have the 1000 Mile Trial
as part of the ever-extending Homecoming
Scotland 2014 programme.
The next day crews will be allowed a late
start to recover from the night before, catch
up on business commitments and fettle the
cars. The route will take them on a scenic
trip through the lands of the legendary F1
racing driver Jim Clark, before reaching the
overnight halt at Slaley Hall in Hexham.
A challenging day five will sees competitors
driving through the magnificent scenery of
the Yorkshire moors, where they will take on
a selection of regularities and time control
sections before finishing the day with a test
at the Harewood hill climb.
Navigation on day six will become more taxing
as crews continue their way south to visit one
of the original venues of the 1000 Mile Trial

at the Welbeck Estate. A number of open

flowing tests and roads will then take the
crews to the overnight halt near Silverstone,
the spiritual home of British motor racing.
The final day will see competitors arriving
back at Woodcote Park, The Royal Automobile
Clubs 350-acre estate in Surrey, with a series
of tests and regularities. The Veteran Car
Run will join them for the last 100 miles for
a spectacular finish in front of the Woodcote
Park clubhouse.
There are some important entries so far
including a 1932 Rolls Royce Phantom II,
which is coming out of the Caramulo Museum
in Portugal specifically to take part in the
event, and an original 1929 Bugatti Type 37A
once owned by Tazio Nuvolari, the famous
Italian motorcycle and race car driver.
PatrickBurkesaid: These are just a few of
the interesting cars that will be campaigned
on this event but we know of a number
of international collectors preparing and
restoring similarly important and impressive
vehicles to take part.
The 1000 Mile Trial is open to cars
manufactured before 1940. Entries are still
available.

In countdown to Dubai 24 Hours battle, UAE star

Khaled Al Qubaisi urges teenagers not to waste Daman
Speed Academy opportunity

haled Al Qubaisi, who has set his

sights on another place in the
record books next week, says a new
generation of Emirati racing drivers
are being given a huge opportunity
to match and exceed his achievements in the
international arena.
Al Qubaisi, the first home driver to win the UAEs
top two international endurance races and the
first to compete at Le Mans, is chasing a third
successive victory in the Dunlop 24 Hours of
Dubai on 9-10 January with Team Abu Dhabi by
Black Falcon.
Among those willing him success at Dubai
Autodrome will be the five young Emiratis
enrolled in the Daman Speed Academy, which
was set up by Abu Dhabi Racing in conjunction
with the National Health Insurance Company in
October.
Al Qubaisi, whose 13-year-old daughter Amna

is among the Academys first batch of students,

said: There is no limit to what they can achieve.
They have been given an opportunity which I
would have done anything to have.
If I had started in motor racing at their age,
and been given such an opportunity, who knows
what I would have done. Maybe I would have
been in Formula One now.
My message to them is that they should take
this opportunity very seriously and not waste it.
They must be 100 per cent committed.
We can identify the best young drivers at Abu
Dhabi Racing and support them, but they must
have total commitment if they are going to get
to the top level.
The Daman Speed Academy was instigated by
Al Qubaisi in his role as Managing Director of
Abu Dhabi Racing, which was set up last year to
increase the Emirates presence in global motor
sport and create more opportunities for Emiratis

on the international stage.

The Academys long-term objective is to produce
the UAEs first Formula One driver, and Al Qubaisi
hopes his own success in endurance racing can
help inspire the seven youngsters currently
undergoing an eight-month training programme
in Abu Dhabi.
After a commanding victory in the recent Gulf
12 Hours at Yas Marina Circuit, Al Qubaisi is
relishing another big challenge in the Dunlop
24 Hours of Dubai alongside Germanys Bernd
Schneider and Dutchman Jeroen Bleekemolen.
They are being joined by Andreas Simonsen
from Sweden who won the Pro Am category in
this years FIA GT series and took overall victory
in Slovakia in the teams lead Mercedes AMG
SLS GT3, and Al Qubaisi cant wait to get back
behind the wheel at Dubai Autodrome where he
became the first Emirati driver to taste victory in
the endurance classic two years ago.

opportunities in motorsport.
Nissan has entered a line-up of 10 drivers for the
Dubai 24 Hours all of whom are of different
nationalities. Nissan GT Academy Team RJN will
run two Nissan 370Z NISMOs in the race that
has been the traditional prize drive for winners
of GT Academy.
The Class of 2013
The four newest GT Academy winners and
their mentor, 2008 winner Lucas Ordonez, will
race the first of the 370Z NISMOs. In 2013, GT
Academy ran competitions in Europe, Germany,
Russia and the U.S. The four winners were
selected during the rigorous Race Camp finals
held at Silverstone in September.

Miguel Faisca, 24, is the winner of GT

Academy Europe. The Portuguese racer
was studying Mechanical Engineering when
he beat almost a million gamers to the prize
in September 2013.
Florian Strauss, a 29 year-old Berliner, was

a car rental manager when he won GT

GT Academy USA winner, Nick McMillen, is
a 20 year-old ex Volkswagen Salesman from
Salem in Oregon.
Stansislav Aksenov is the 22 year-old winner
of GT Academy Russia who is hoping to
following in the footsteps of 2012 Russian
winner Mark Shulzhitskiy who recently made
his LM P2 debut.
Lucas Ordonez needs no introduction. The
first winner of GT Academy has gone on to
take two podium finishes at Le Mans and
claimed the Blancpain Endurance Series
Pro-Am drivers title just a couple of months
ago.
An international line-up
The line up of the first 370Z NISMO
demonstrates the spread of GT Academy
across the globe. The line up in the second
car will ask the question where next for GT
Academy?
Every year the Dubai 24 Hours is a great
test of our newest graduates, said Nissans
Director of Global Motorsports Darren Cox.
This year we thought it would be great to
get together some other friends from across
the world to experience the speed of the
Academy drivers directly.
Karun Chandhok is Indias best-known
racing driver. A successful career in single-

seaters took him all the way to Formula One

before he made the switch to sportscars.
James Moffat is already a winner for Nissan
in Australia where he races a Nissan Altima
in the V8 Supercars Championship. Lucas
Ordonez and Michael Krumm tested his car
earlier this year, so now its James turn to
switch seats.
Tor Graves hails from Thailand and races a
Nissan-powered LM P2 car in the FIA World
Endurance Championship.
Salman Al Khater is the 29-year-old winner
of the first GT Academy Middle East. He
has already won an international endurance
race as, along with Ashley Oldfield and
Tomas Scheckter, he took a class win in this
years Britcar 1000kms at Silverstone.
Ashley Oldfield is the first winner of GT
Academy South Africa. The 29 year old
raced to victory at the Britcar 1000kms at
Silverstone this year.
GT Academy is getting huge international
interest, continued Cox. We know that
there are gamers outside of the traditional
GT Academy territories who want a shot
at winning, so in 2014 we will announce
where GT Academy will go next. Nissan
is an international company with global
ambitions, and its exciting that GT
Academy reflects that.

on Hondas new-for-2014 Fireblade SP at the Losail
circuit in Qatar last month.
The lastest and sharpest version of the bike that
Haslam and Rea race for the Pata Honda team in the

by Honda Motor Europe to motorcycle journalists
from all over the world.
Boasting front and rear adjustable hlins suspension

championship calendar in 2014 for the first time since
2009.

Vettel voted
sportsman of the year
F

1 champion Sebastian Vettel has been voted sportsman of the year by

European news agencies. Twenty one European outlets cast their votes and
the Red Bull dariver emerged with more points than tennis Rafael Nadal, and
British athlete Mo Farah. Vettels latest victory is despite widespread claims
that the German is only dominating F1 because of Adrian Neweys design
genius. To this rival Felipe Massa said: It (Vettels dominance) is because of
his talent, no doubt. He is an excellent driver who deserves everything he has
achieved. Many people say he wins only because he has the best car. He does
(have the best car), but the work he has done is amazing and if he continues
to have a competitive car, he will win more, added Massa.
Vettels new status as arguably F1s very best driver is also supported by
his traditional ally and friend Bernie Ecclestone. Vettel has committed his
medium-term future to Red Bull, but Ecclestone thinks the German will
eventually move elsewhere. The problem is that all the drivers want to finish
their careers at Ferrari, which isnt good, Ecclestone argued. The 26-yearold drivers popularity, however, is another matter, particularly after he was
repeatedly booed on post-race podiums in 2013.

Did Webber quit F1 because of Vettel?

If one believes Jean-Eric Vergne, who drives for the second-tier Red Bull team, Toro Rosso, then Mark Webber quit formula one because he got tired
of being beaten by teammate Sebastian Vettel. The Frenchman Vergne told a newspaper that he is now over the disappointment of missing out on
the departing Webbers seat at the premier Red Bull Racing team to his 2013 teammate Daniel Ricciardo. Vergne, 23, was asked if he thinks Australian
veteran Webber, who is heading to Le Mans with Porsche, quit F1 because he got tired of spraying champagne on F1 podiums. I dont think he got
tired of that, Vergne answered. He got tired of his teammate winning all the time. And another year of the same made no sense to him. He would not
even be happy if his team continued to win everything -- you have the same car but youre beaten every weekend by your teammate. You would get tired
of that, he added, even when you are on the podium. I think Mark is a very good driver and a true competitor, Vergne explained, but things were not
going as he wanted.

Schumacher was skiing at a resort in Meribel, France, when he fell and injured himself, hitting his
head on a rock. Safety conscious Schumacher was wearing a helmet at the time of the accident, but
the severity of the impact has apparently left the racer in a coma. Schumacher was reportedly skiing
on unmarked slopes at the time of his accident.
Though barely conscious after the impact, Schumacher was reportedly left dazed and shocked from
the impact as he was airlifted first to a trauma centre in Moutiers and then transported to University
Hospital Center in nearby Grenoble. Schumacher arrived in a coma and required immediate brain
surgery.
There are conflicting reports of Schumachers present condition, with initial reports suggesting the
injury was not very serious and newer information suggesting that he sustained severe head
trauma.
Schumacher initially retired from F1 in 2006 after winning five straight titles with Ferrari following
two earlier ones with Benetton. He returned to the sport in 2010 and drove for three seasons for
Mercedes without much success before retiring again last year.

Paying the
right price

You have got to admit that the comic strip Dilbert represents a snapshot of our professional lives. It hardly
matters that Scott Adams has chosen a quintessential American tech company selling some specious
products as his template its the characters and the repartee that serve as reflections of our own workplaces.
But thats not all sometimes you get a gem that speaks about more general human tendencies.
One that springs to mind is a frame where the Division head is busy being sold Linux for a million dollars. Of
course, in the graphic world, the division head is dumb and we know that somehow, in his own twisted way,
Dilbert will save the day. But havent you come across similar situations in real life?
At the heart of the problem is our seeming inability to judge what something is worth. Let me correct that
this inability seems to come to the fore when we are spending someone elses money. When you go out and
buy things like milk, bread, a laptop, a watch or indeed your next house you are a walking calculator. Is the
125 gram soap bar that costs 90% of the 160 gram one better value? Can you afford to send your child to a
private school that charges an arm and a leg? Tick the box.
On the other hand we have organisations investing in purchase departments, internal audits and complex
software to decide that buying a box of paper clips from a new supplier will save them a few baizas and
buying a years stock will have paid an employees salary for the day. Yet when it comes to some things,
companies overpay so much that it makes you wonder why they have all these systems in place?
I personally believe that the phenomenon of software and media piracy is caused largely because of the
huge inflation of real price as opposed to deemed value. If you are a home user of an office package like
MS WORD, you would use it maybe once a week to communicate then why would you pay more than a
couple of Rials for it? The customer isnt necessarily looking for free otherwise most of us would be using
Linux anyway. At the same time I have had vendors hounding me for the past few years trying to sell systems
that cost tens of thousands of Rials and when I look at them I can see that rampant opportunism seems to
be the name of the game.
For, like Scott Adams Dilbert, we all work in organisations that use similar processes and systems, with
changes depending on our business and our countrys laws. While it isnt a one-size fits all scenario like
that offered by WORD, its close. All you have to do is have a reliable backbone to do the dirty work, skin it
according to the client and you have a cash cow at your disposal (after you have had the first client pay for
all the development). And something I find even funnier is when your license (of course you never own the
program that you paid to develop!) is being paid for you now are asked to pay for it by number of users as

if the size, strength and flavor of the system has to be changed to accommodate more seats!
I think I prefer the world of hardware like a car, watch or computer. You can judge the cost of what went
into making it, you can touch and feel the product you paid for and most importantly, the seller cant then
go out and sell it on to the next buyer. Its yours. You can flaunt it to your friends and associates (though you

would have to be a real geek to try that with a computer server) and feel good in the acceptance of money
well spent.
Dilbert may not have all the answers, but one thing you can be sure of his antics in the Scott Adams umwelt
can get you asking some pertinent questions.
