My Friend, the Undertaker

Antonio*wastherstfriendwehadwhenwemovedtoAntequera.Wehadmetacoupleofotherpeopleinthoserstfewdays,but
Antoniowastheguywhojustenvelopedusinhappinessandhugs.Heembracedus,quiteliterallywithhisgiantbearhugs,andwithhis
easyandquickfriendship.Wehadbeentold,Spaniardsareatoughlot.Youllnevergetclosetothem.Youmightbecomefriendly
acquaintances,butnevertruefriends.Butwewerehavingatough mebelievingthatwithAntonioinourlives.Antonioisthisbigted
dybearofaguy,awalkingtalkingSantaClaustype.Alwayssmilingandjokingaround.Bestfriendtotheworld.
BillyquicklyfellrightinwithAntonio.Theymetseveral mesaweekforcoeeortodothingsintown.AntonioinvitedBillyintohis
home(anotherthingweweretoldwouldneveroccurinSpain)tosharestoriesandtohelpeachotherwithlanguage.Antoniobecame
BillyslanguagehelperforSpanish,andBillyhelpedAntoniolearnsomeEnglish.Antoniohasbeenahugehelptousinculturalma ers
heisatrustedfriendwhowillalwaystellusthetruth,alwaystelluswhenwemightbesteppingintoodeep,oralertustocultural
landminesthatwecouldneverhaveknownwithoutguidance.Heintroducesustopeople,heinvitesustopicnicsandcookouts,andhe
helpsusgetconnectedtoopportuni estoserveinourtown.
Inourdisciplegroup,Antonioisverya en vetothestoriesaboutJesustreatmentofthemarginalized.Heishighlypar cipatoryin
ourstorydiscussionswhenitcomestolepersandtheuncleanandtheunjusttreatmentofothers.Ihavealwaysbeentouchedbyhis
keensenseofunderstandingandcompassion,andIhavelovedhimforhistenderheartduringthesestudies.
Oneweek,aswestudiedanotherstoryabouttheunclean,specicallyasitpertainedtodeath,Antonioremindedthegroupofthemod
erndaytreatmentinSpainofundertakers.Becauseourclassisalmostexclusivelyna veSpaniards,thisstorywascommonplacefor
them.Theyallknowinglyshooktheirheadslikeitwasjustanotherstory.Butforme,itwasnewknowledgethatrockedmyworld.
Undertakersormor ciansareconsideredunclean,s llinthisdayandage.Thosewhodealwithdeatharemarginalized.Whenthe
undertakergoesintoarestaurantorcaf,thereisaspecicplaceforhimtosit.Hehasaspecialsetofdishesthataresetasidefor
onlyhisuse.Becausethisisasmalltown,everyoneknowstheundertaker.Whenhearrives,heknowswheretositandthestaknow
togoandgetthedishesthatarereservedforonlyhim.Evenhisglassandhissilverwareissetapartfromthegeneralpublic.
Thisis2016!ThisisaEuropeanna on,arstworldcountry!Thiswasahugeshocktome.Ikeptmylearnerfaceonandstayedin
myculturalanthropologicalstance,butIwasjustdyinginside.Howcouldthisbetruetoday,in2016?Thisisthekindoftreatmentthat

Iworriedonthisstoryforafewweeks.Ijustcouldntgetoverit.AndmyheartbrokeforAntonioyousee,myfriendAntonioisanundertaker.
Foryears,hehasbeentheonewhoarrivesatthehospitaloratprivatehomestopickupthedeceasedandcareforthebody.Hehasbeentheone
whohascompassioninthedarkestmoments.Hehasbeentheonewhogoestothefuneralhome,whodoesallthatneedstobedoneinthose
hoursbetweendeathandburial,andwhoseestothenalmomentsbeforelovedonessaytheirlastgoodbyes.Itisatoughjoboneventhebest
ofdays.Sadly,Antoniohasbeenoutofworksincejustbeforewemovedhereadownsizingoffuneralhomestainthemiddleofamajoreco
nomiccrisisputAntonioontheunemploymentrolls,wherehehasbeenfor3yearsnow.Itseemsthatitsalsodicultforaformerundertakerto
ndanewjob.Antonionevertalksaboutthat.Hejustcon nuestolookforwork.
Thispastweek,IaskedAntonioifhewouldrevisitthatstorywithmethestoryaboutthedishesandthemarginaliza onofundertakers.Alt
houghhehadnottoldthestoryinrstperson,Iwondered.Iaskedhimifthathadappliedtohim,ifhehadlivedthatreality.
Yes.Yes,thatstoryismystory,hesaid.Thatistherealityforundertakers.
Anewwaveofpainandcompassioncameoverme.Thisismyfriend,wearetalkingabout.Thisisapartofhisstorythathadneverdawnedon
me.IcouldneverhaveknowntoaskaboutitbecauseitissofarfrommycultureandunderstandingthatIwouldneverhavethoughtofit.
Ipushedon,Antonio,whatdoesthatdotoyourheart?
Adeepbreath,thenheso enedandhisbodychanged.Hesmiledali le,the
smileofrealizingthatsomeonejustsawthroughtoyoursoul.Heanswered,
Youhavetomakeyourhearthard.Hardsoitwonthurt.Hiseyesbrimmed
withtears.
Obviously,ithurts,Antonio.Yourheartisnothard.
Yes,some mesithurts.Peoplemakejokesaboutme,ohandedthingsthat
arefunnytothem.Evenfriendstelljokesaboutme.Ilaughandtrytoletitroll
o.Itry.Butmywifeitisterribleforher.Ithurtsherdeeply.Shehasnever
recoveredfromhearingpeoplesjokesandhowpeopletreatme.Antonios
wifehassueredyearsofdebilita ngclinicaldepression.Manydays,shecan
notleavethehouse.Antonio,too,suersfromdepressionandseveralrelated
healthissues.Imseeingamuchbiggerpictureofmyfriendandhisheart.
Hegoesontotellmeaboutotherindigni esofbeingtheundertaker.Gassta ona endantsrefusedtowaitonhimorpumpthegasatthefull
servicepumps.Theywouldntgonearthehearse.Thepublicshunnedhimandturnedawaywhenhewaswiththecar.
Eventhedeadmeritmoredignitythantheliving,breathingmanwhoa endstothem.
Myheartissoheavyformyfriend.Jovial,peaceful,compassionateAntonio.Toknowthepainthathehasfelt,thathes llfeels.Tonowunder
stand,tobeabletoseethemaskthathewearswiththeworld.Toknowthatthispreciousmanhasbeenmarginalized.NowIknowwhyheispas
sionateabouttheJesuswhoreachedouttotheunclean,theJesuswhotouchedlepersandhadcompassionforthosewhowereshunnedandcast
out.Antonioisin matelyandpassionatelyinlovewiththeJesuswhoenteredintodeath,whohadcompassionforLazarus,whotouchedthe
dead,whoHimselfwasdeadandexperiencedthetombandisnowAlive.Imhonoredtocalltheundertakermyfriend.

Prayer Requests -

Pray for the global regions of Europe, the Middle East, and the Balkans we work as Care Coordinators for workers in these regions. Pray for the work that each of those cross-cultural workers is doing in their areas. Pray for political issues in each region. Pray
for the refugee and immigrant situation that continues to move vast numbers of people across the continent. Pray for people who suddenly find themselves with no home, no job, no family connections, and no options. Pray that our workers can be a light in the darkness
and love all people well as we continue to live out Jesus love in our own lives.

Pray for Spain. Prayers for God to raise up workers who are willing to go and live and work in the 7000+ towns in Spain that have no
believing witness for Jesus. Pray for the healing of centuries of religious oppression and struggle. Pray for a new light in dark places.

Pray for Relationships: Our deepest and most meaningful work revolves around building close relationships with those in our local
area. Pray for us as we continue to walk alongside people in their daily lives - that we can shine light and Christ's love in all that we do,
and that we are always aware of those everyday teachable moments when we can share a story about His goodness and compassion.

Pray for our Family: Being a family separated by 5000 miles and an ocean is not easy. Being counselors and care-givers to others in
crisis is tough on us and it is sometimes hard to shake that off and wind down for family time. Raising a daughter in a cross-cultural setting - a daughter whose primary language and thought process is not our own, but that of the cultures she has lived in the most - is challenging. Being a husband and wife team who work together 24/7 has its own special set of dynamics. Pray for us to have strength and
peace and joy for all that it takes to be a missionary family serving Christ in the world.

What do they do???

We serve in several roles in ministry, and each of those holds

a variety of ways that we work and serve others. Our roles as
Care Coordinators for Europe and the Middle East /
Balkans and as local Cross-Cultural Workers to Spain include coaching and counseling, teaching and mentoring, leading
and equippingand a LOT of loving others! This column will be dedicated to sharing parts of that work with you each month.

One of the ways we minister in Spain is via teaching. InTexas,wewereteachers.Ithasalwaysbeenourpassion.Whilewe

heldotherrolesthroughtheyears,workedinvariouselds,andevenspentawhileassmallbusinessentrepreneurs,therst
lovewasandalwayswillbeteaching.I(Laurie)havealwayssaidthatitwas,inmanyways,morediculttoleavemycareer
andmyclassroomthanitwastosellmycherishedVictorianfarmhouseandpossessionsandsaygoodbyetoTexas.Infact,to
thisday,Is llgrievethelossofthatpartofmylifemyclassroomandmystudentsandmypassionforlearningandleading.

teachersinbestprac cesforChris aneduca onandchilddevelopment.Weeachhaveseveralcellgroupsthatweteachand
facilitateinbiblestudyanddiscipleship.WehelpimmigrantsandSpaniardstolearnaboutculturaldierencesandhowto
seeandvaluetheworldviewofothers.WeteachandtrainotherCCWs(crossculturalworkers)incoachingskillsandcross
culturalministryprac ces.Weteachmarriageenrichmentclasses.Weeventurnvisitsintoteachablemomentspeople
whocometoSpainforretreatorvaca onorevenshorttermteamsenduplearningaboutSpanishhistoryandculture.
