TheFoodBankofSouthCentralMichiganhasinformedKalamazooPublicSchoolsand
KalamazooLoaves&Fishesthatcertainboxesofashreddedwheatcereal,whichweresent
homewithchildrenlastweek,containedbuglarvae.

Weekendfoodbackpacksweredistributedtoabout600childrenin12elementaryschoolson
Thursday,March10,aspartofaLoaves&Fishesprogram,whichiscoordinatedby
CommunitiesInSchoolsofKalamazoo.TheFoodBankprovidesthefoodforthebackpacksto
KalamazooLoaves&Fishes.

Someofthe600backpackscontainedboxesoftheaffectedcereal,whichhaslot#KBB0211.
Thelotnumbercanbefoundonthetopleftcorneroftheboxes.Familieswhofindboxesof
cerealwiththatlotnumbershoulddiscardtheproductinanoutdoorwastereceptacle.Tobe
safe,allcontentsfromlastweeksfoodbackpackshouldbedestroyed.

TheFoodBankdiscoveredthecontaminationinaroutinefoodsafetyinspection.Anyremaining
productwasimmediatelydestroyedonsiteatboththeFoodBankofSouthCentralMichigan
andKalamazooLoaves&Fishes.Thisappearstobeaveryisolatedincidentaffectingonlya
smallamountoffood.KalamazooPublicSchoolshasnotreceivedcomplaintsrelatedtothis
fooddistribution.
