Unit 1: Pre-production LO1

Comprehensively explain and present to a quality that reflects near-professional standards

fully detailed requirements and sources of requirements for a specific media production
TASK
From all the pre-production you have carried out over the past year you need to pick one
and complete the following task.
You will need to show an excellent understanding of the requirements for the proposed
production and will be able to explain fully why each element is required.
You will give detailed explanations of how these requirements will be sourced and give full
consideration to codes of practice and regulatory issues.
From the table below you need to explain why each element was important to your chosen
production and detail how you would source them.
For example

Importance

Sourcing

Importance
It is important to have finances in place before production starts, as every
producer needs to pay for Equipment used such as Cameras, tripods, green
screen, lighting and sound. For an Advert production for example, a producer
may also need materials such correct costumes, items for correct mise-en-scene
and talent in order to fulfil the desired effect. Crew will also be needed such as
cameraman, soundman lighting engineer researchers editors and runners in order
to produce a professional looking advert.
Once all is complete facilities such as editing suits and postproduction equipment
will be needed and these cost a lot of money.
Sourcing
Crew
Crew can be sourced trough websites such as Creative England
http://www.creativeengland.co.uk/index.php/portfolio/locationproduction-support/
Editing suits such as Dynamic post Production
Facility
http://www.dynamicpost.co.uk/index.php/final-cut-pro-suites/ can
be hired for 350 per day. This will include the editor and sound
engineer.
Materials
Materials can be sourced from high street shops, retail outlets or
studio Props departments
Transport
Transport can be sourced via Transport for London
http://www.tfl.gov.uk, National Rail http://www.nationalrail.co.uk,
hertz car hire etc..
A days travel card in London will cost the producer 12 per
person.

complete. Either ay, a table like the one below needs to be used.
Finance:
Sources of
finance

Equipment
Transport
Talent
Crew
Materials
Facility hire

Importance
Finance is very important in Film and TV productions because
financing a budget helps the production happen as you would have
to pay for the equipment such as cameras, tripods, dolly, green
screen, lighting also microphones for sound, without all of these
equipment there wouldnt be any production. Although there will be
a certain type of budget that is needed for each category like for
crew, facility and equipment. Before you will start the production
you will need a set budget so you can get all of the sources of
finance that is needed to the best ability. Also when you are in preproduction stage of your production you will need to know exactly at
what cost the crew and cast will be willing to work for. It is
recommended that you should spend much more of the budget on
the equipment for better quality of the production. It is essential
that you organise transport to the location or facility and also
organise the transport as cheaply as possible so It could get the cast
and crew places and also it will be efficient. Also it is very important
to have different locations or facility hire so it keeps the audience
interested and also it would seem a bit natural as in everyday life
you dont ever stay In one place. All materials needs to be sourced
for the production as for example if you were making a period
drama it is necessary to have costumes from the times that your
period drama is set in so you can make the period drama much
more believable and create a good mise-en-scene.
Sourcing
The crew can be sourced through many companies such as:

Materials- Costumes will be from High street shops or online shops.
Time:

Deadlines
Availability of equipment
Availability of personnel (size
of team; roles)

Importance
Deadlines is very important in Film/TV production because you have
to get the whole production filmed to a certain deadline so the
editing process can be done before it is due for release. Also
deadlines are important as you have to keep to the deadline strictly
because if you go over the original deadline it will cost the
production even more money and might go way over the budget. If
there wasnt any deadlines for the production the filming may take
even longer than should be and it wont get finished completely also
this makes even harder for the editors to edit the whole production
in one go as all of the filming is being taken place at different times
of the year. Also the availability of the cast and crew is very
important so when you go and film your production you have
everything and everyone in place so the production filming can run
smoothly. For example, if you hired a studio or equipment and it was
only available for a certain amount of time so it means that you
need to organise yours and everyone elses schedule and deadlines
for different parts of the production around the hire's availability and
always commit to it.
Sourcing
Facilities:

Production equipment
Post-production equipment
facility houses

Importance
Production equipment is essential in Film/TV production because
without the equipment there wouldnt be a production because you

would need a camera to film your production. Also equipment is

important in making the production more effective or create a
certain mood or atmosphere by using lighting, microphones and a
green screen. Also post-production is very important as you may
need the software in order to edit your production at home on your
laptop but if you wanted to use much more professional editing
equipment such as editing studios you would have to hire them out
or get professional graphic or CGI people for your special effects in
your production. Equipment and facilities are very important to the
film industry as without them the final production piece wouldn't be
produced. The quality of the equipment depends on what you hire
but it is preferred to get a high quality equipment if you want it to a
certain standard but the quality of the equipment depends on the
budget of the production you are making. If you were making a
small production and had a low budget for the production then it is
as important to have a high quality equipment but with bigger
productions the budget is much higher and high quality equipment
would be more important to the production. Post-production
facilities are important as they are necessity as they are used to
transform all footage into film. Also they need to be bigger enough
to fit all of the crew needed for the production. Different postproduction equipment can vary in qualities depending on the prices.
the prices of the equipment is important when you are purchasing
or hiring out equipment for the production as you need to make sure
that the price fits in with the budget you have for your production
but at the best quality that you can afford. If the sound and filming
quality is very poor then it means that the audience wouldn't want
to watch it even the story concept intrigues them.

Materials:

sourced from:
Original materials,
Archive and library materials
Photo-library materials
Sound library materials,
Internet
Audio
Script (upload an example)
Interviews

Costumes

Importance
It is important to have original material because it means that only
you have the copyright to that piece of material also it means that it
is your own material that you found and created yourself but no one
else has used. Original material defines that it is your idea and it's
unique to you for your production. Also if the idea of the film is
original it will make people go and watch it as the concept of the
film intrigued them and its original. If the concept had been copied
or not an original material or concept then copyright issues would
rise as the concept may be taken directly or similar to a previously
made production. Examples of original material may be in the form
of script, interview, and costumes of the characters.
Archive material would be used because it could be used for
historical purposes or educational as it would be from the times that
you production may be about and can be used as part of research
for the production. Archive and library material may be used
appropriately for the production if for example your production was
about the World War, it would be appropriate to use footage from
during those times to give the audience an insight to what it was
like during the times rather than describing or recreating it. Using
sound library materials it would be beneficial to low budgeted
productions as if for example you need some high quality sound
effects and don't have enough money in the budget to recreate
them so you would use sound library material from other
productions such as canned laughter.
The internet is very useful in helping you with researching the topics
that your production is based on. You can also use the internet to
research in to the marketing aspect and find what people would like
to see or expect in a specific genre. The internet is very helpful in
providing platforms that you could make your production available
to for streaming to attract the audience and also if your production
is on a low budget then it might mean that the internet will be the
only option to show your production to the public. Putting your
production on to the internet would help to build an audience for the
people whom are new to the film industry and it would help to
possibly gain attention from someone whom have experience and
work in the industry.
The audio and sounds are extremely important and essential part of
the production as music or special sound effects helps to set up the
scene and could possibly create a specific atmosphere you want to
create. For example, if the production you are creating is part of the
horror genre then you would use specific sounds and audio in order
to define the genre clearly to the audience and also to create an
eerie, intense atmosphere. Dialogue is important if needed to the
production as it could be used to explain in more depth of what the
story you are trying to tell in the production and also dialogue can
effectively be used to convey characters' thoughts or feeling, so
therefore clearly making the production much easier for the

audience to understand fully and get emotionally invested in with

the story told in the production.
The script is essential to all productions as it explains the story even
further as it gives the audience another way for them to understand
the story and the characters in to more depth. Also the script is very
helpful for the cast and crew to know what they are supposed to be
doing and when they will be doing and keep track of the progress in
the filming stage of the production process.
Interviews for either for the cast or the crew is important because it
is essential for the director and the agents when hiring so they get
an idea of how passionate the people are when they are in the
hiring process so they can try to avoid hiring people whom doesn't
seem interested or passionate to what they will be doing. Not only
interviews will be important for the hiring process they can be
important for the marketing stage as the stars of the productions
could be interviewed promoting the production that they made a
contribution to.
When in the production stage of your film/ TV show it is essential to
use different costumes depending of the genre and the times that
the production is set in. Costumes are essential for setting the scene
and makes the production much more believable. For example if
your production was a period drama then you would need costumes
that go with those times such as if your production was set during
the Tudor times then you would need big, elegant, corsets and dress
etc. and if you use modern clothes and make a production set
during these times it would distract from the production and the
audience wouldn't feel as immersed or invested in to the production
and it wouldn't make the production believable.

Limitations and risks:
Distance, access, cost,
weather

Importance
Locations is very important in your production because it helps to
define the narrative and the time that the production is set for
example a record shop would suggest it is set in the 80's to 90's.
Locations is important because without it your production wouldn't
be at all interesting to watch. Although locations are quite important
but there would be some limitations as you would have to think
about the travel cost as well as the availability of the location also
the weather because it could be very tricky to estimate when to get
the location planning sorted throughout the year. it is important that
you know all of the risks and the limitations that may occur
throughout the production as for example if in one of the locations
you need to film in is too far away from all of the other locations so
you would spend however days it needs if there is various scene
needed to shoot then you would shoot all those scenes at the same
time to save money and from keeping you going back and forth just
so you can film if you film it chronologically.
Access is important when you are shooting your production as for
certain locations your equipment may not be able to fit in the space
of the location you are going to use to shoot a scene so this would
mean that you would have to find another location or use different
equipment if the size of location is a problem against the size of the
equipment.
Cost is very important to the production because it aids the director
and the producer of when they are buying equipment or hiring and if
it is within their budget to use it.
Weather is important to the production if you need to film any
scenes outside as the weather is unpredictable and unreliable so it
is essential to always to have a back-up plan when the weather is
not what you expect when you want to film a scene.

regulation:

Clearances
Copyright
Health and safety
Insurance

Importance
When you are filming your production it is important to get all of the
permissions of using equipment if hiring and the locations if it is on
private or protected property. It is extremely important to gain
permission to shoot in a location that you are using as it means that
you are allowed to film your scenes you need and you are avoiding
trespassing.
Also it is important to consider all of the health and safety risks that
you and your crew may be in when you are filming your production
and just in case you should get the insurances on equipment and for
your crew in case anything bad happens to them and you are
prepared for it. It is essential that you make sure that everyone you
hire is legally safe for them to work at your production as there are
regulations in place considering health and safety at the workplace.
Insurance is also needed for equipment if it gets damaged or stolen
and also it is needed for smaller productions but not as important
for bigger productions as there are more people in the work place
and more health and safety hazards that could occur.
It is important to have clearances and copyright permissions so that
you can use anything from other sources into your productions such
as logos, music, stock footage etc.
Sourcing
