Professionalism Reflection

The main focus of this outcome is based on values, ethics and behaviors exhibited in
practice that demonstrate a understanding that constitutes striving for excellence in nursing
discipline as well as in our personal lives. To meet the outcome goals of Professionalism,
knowledge in the value of responsibility is needed to collaborate with other professionals to
promote positive outcomes for individuals, patients and community. To demonstrate skills
consistent with having the ability to make sound clinical decisions in regard to patient care
provisions and other professional situations that may arise in practice, demonstrate loyalty to
patients respecting by their values and beliefs, providing service to others and increasing skills to
maintain competence through education. I believe that the knowledge of evidenced based
practice and the integration of evidence to guide clinical expertise for the delivery of optimal
care are also needed. I am not surprised about the recommendations for this outcome, as a part of
a great profession I have always felt that nursing encompasses many other elements than just
caring for the sick. It is important for patients to be able to trust, confide and rely on the skills
that we possess to create a healing environment. The following are examples of course
assignments that have been a direct reflection of my meeting this outcome. The first document
that I chose for this learning outcome is a reflective journal done in NURS 317. This document
reflects the learning outcome Professionalism, because it required me to be aware of my own
values, beliefs and attitudes through various questions and reflective writings and is a
collaboration of how my own personal behaviors impact my patients. The second document that
is reflective of is outcome was completed in NURS 315 this was a rituals interview. I
interviewed an elderly lady at my church and asked her about her own beliefs, values and rituals
that she used to bring her peace and comfort. Our conversation lasted over 2 hours over lunch
and I really enjoyed it. I feel that this is a great example of Professionalism because I was able to

spend time with a person who was a former leader in the community and learn about her culture
and faith as well as offer her comfort in knowing someone cared. I feel that I have met this
outcome by learning the value of emphasizing good communication skills at the end of life.
Acknowledging the importance of professionalism in my professional and personal life allows
me to learn and grow, elevating my current practice while improving safety and quality of the
care I provide through educational exercises that provoke deep thought into my own beliefs.
