QR Code Hunt
Topic: Math (focusing mainly on multiplication)
Standards and Objectives:
Standard M.S.3.1 (Number and Operations) - Through
communication, representation, reasoning and proof, problem solving,
and making connections within and beyond the field of mathematics,
students will demonstrate understanding of numbers, ways of
representing numbers, and relationships among numbers and number
systems, demonstrate meanings of operations and how they relate to
one another, and compute fluently and make reasonable estimates.
Objectives:
M.O.3.1.8 - Students will be able to add and subtract 2- and 3-digit
whole numbers and money with and without regrouping.
M.O.3.1.9 - Students will be able to demonstrate and model
multiplication (repeated addition, arrays) and division (repeated
subtraction, partitioning).
M.O.3.1.11 - Students will be able to recall basic multiplication facts
and the corresponding division facts.
M.O.3.1.12 - Student will be able to model the distributive property in
multiplication of 2- and 3-digit numbers by a 1- digit number.
Standard M.S.3.2 (Algebra) - Through communication,
representation, reasoning and proof, problem solving, and making
connections within and beyond the field of mathematics, students will
demonstrate understanding of patterns, relations and functions,
represent and analyze mathematical situations and structures using
algebraic symbols, use mathematical models to represent and
understand quantitative relationships, and analyze change in various
contexts.
Objectives:
M.O.3.2.5 - Students will be able to use symbol and letter variables to
represent an unknown quantity and determine the value of the
variable.
My method:

The QR code hunt will begin when I give each team the first code,
which will tell them which of the 3 boxes in front of them contains the
next clues. Once the students have answered the first math problem,
they will know which box to work with. The next three clues will be
underneath the correct box, and the answers will be the combination
for the lock on the box. Once the students have opened the box, they
will have a clue leading them to a specific room in the school that
contains the next code. The room will have three codes, each one
being one of the numbers in the combination of a specific locker. The
teams will have to solve the combination and then answer the next
question to find the locker number. The final clue will be in the locker,
and the students will have to bring me the answer to that question in
order to receive their prize of a small toy or piece of candy, and the
first place team will receive a slightly larger prize. This hunt will help
the students practice their multiplication and word problem solving
skills, as well as reviewing some other skills like addition and
subtraction.

Question
Welcome to
the Amazing
Math
Scavenger
Hunt! The
goal of the
hunt is to
solve all the
math
problems in
the clues so
you can win
the hunt.
Solve the
problems in
order to get
the next clue,
and work as a
team to win
the challenge.
You have 3
boxes in front
of you and
your next clue
is in one of

them, but
which one?
The box
number is the
answer to this
problem: If a
squirrel wants
to save some
nuts for the
winter, and he
collects 4 nuts
every day for
7 days, how
many nuts
does he have?
Once you
solve this
problem, look
underneath
the correct
box for the
clues that will
give you the
combination
for the lock.

The first
number for
the lock is the
answer to 4X2

The second
number for
the lock is the
answer to
15/5

The third
number for
the lock is the
answer to 5648

Now that you

have opened
the box, here
is your next
quest: go to
the room
number that
matches the
answer to the
problem 56/8

Great! Now
you are going
to have to
open a locker
to get the
next clue
but which
locker??
Before I
answer that
question, I am
going to give
you the
combination
to open the
locker. The
first number is
the answer to
this word
problem: If
Sally has 25
donuts and
wants to bring
some to her 5
friends at
school, how
many can she
give to each
friend after
Sally eats 3
donuts and
her brother
eats 2?

For the
second
number of the
combination,
answer this
question: If I
go to the
grocery store
on February 8,
and I need to
wait 12 days
before I go to
the store
again, what
will the date
be when I go
to the store
again?

For the third

number of the
combination,
find the
answer to this
problem: Bill
the alien
wants to make
clones of
himself. He
clones himself
once, but then
he decides
that he wants
to make even
more clones.
If Bill clones
both copies of
himself one
more time,
how many
clones are
there of Bill?

Awesome!
Now you have
the
combination!
But which
locker is the
next clue in?
To figure out
the locker
number, youll
need to show
me your
knowledge of
percentages.
If there are 50
kids in the
swimming
pool, and 30
of the kids are
girls, what
percentage of
the kids in the
pool are boys?
Congratulatio
ns! You got to
the final clue!
To win the
challenge,
answer this
question: If
Fred has 15
friends and
wants to give
each of his
friends 3
cookies, how
many cookies
does Fred
need to have?
Once you
have the
answer, come
tell me and
you can get
your prize!
